2. Celebrate the European Day of
Languages with us!
Throughout Europe, 800 million Europeans are represented in the Council of Europe's 47
member states and all are encouraged to discover more languages at any age, as part of or
alongside their studies.
This stems from the Council of Europe’s conviction that linguistic diversity is a tool for achieving
greater intercultural understanding and a key element in the rich cultural heritage of our
continent. Therefore, the Council of Europe, in Strasbourg, promotes plurilingualism in the whole
of Europe.
At the Council of Europe’s initiative, the European Day of Languages has been celebrated every
year since 2001 on 26 September - together with the European Commission.

3. Covid 19
This year, Covid 19 affected all EU member states, forcing most Europeans to social distancing
and isolation for months on end, in an attempt to contain or reduce the transmisssion of this
deadly virus.
Many of us were unable to travel to other countries, especially during our holidays, being denied
the opportunity to get to know other languages, cultures, traditions or to enjoy these countries’
beaches, sights, people and food.
But this pandemic was also responsible for unseen acts of courage and solidarity. Through the
use of social media, people from all over the world, were able to unite, support each other and
overcome obstacles and barriers which in the past kept them apart. This is one of the most
amazing feats of this disaster of global proportions. Covid 19 has paralised the world, but it has
also taught us that despite our many difference, we are all the same...
4. Covid 19 and the EDL celebrations
So this year’s EDL activities will remind us of this dual aspects of this pandemic:
On the one hand, we will highlight some moments of solidarity and unity among people and
nations, despite their linguistic, cultural and religious differences;
On the other hand, we will be transported to other countries, perhaps those we wanted to visit,
but were unable to do so.
All these activities will be done without endangering the social distancing of teachers and
students.
Have fun with the activities of this atypical celebration of The European Day of Languages!

11. 1. Learn how to say "Hello" in
several languages
Work individually or in pairs to create posters or decorate masks with a greeting such as “Hello”
or “How are you?” in several different languages.
The pupils presenting the posters, masks and/or uttering the greetings are recorded on video
(for example using a mobile phone).
The clips produced can be combined into a single video - presenting the results of the activity.

12. 2. Miss travelling?
Make a map of the places you want to visit and learn the most useful expressions in the language
of your dream travel destination.
This can be done as an individual project or in pairs. You can make a list of elements which each
poster should contain – such as: reasons why to go there; the sights to visit; things to do; which
language/s is/are spoken there and what makes it/them unique; as well as what expressions
would be important for the holiday.
