Garbage Dreams is the name of the
Documentary made about Youth who live
and Work in Zabbaleen Village (Manshyet
Nasser) In Egypt.
The Documentary is designed to show how
these people live their daily life , what do
they do with the garbage as their main
business and what do they dream of to get a
better life
3. Spirit Of Youth
is an Egyptian NGO founded in Cairo by a group of
young women and men from the recycling community
of Manchiyet Nasser. It was officially registered in 2004
and works with children and youths.
The Spirit of Youth Association aims to empower
children and youths who are denied their basic rights to
play constructive roles in their communities.
At the heart of the NGO is a unique learning center –
the Recycling School for Boys.
4. The Recycling School
The Recycling School is working to educate the garbage
collectors’ boys whom are illiterate or dropped out of the
formal education, school Concept is to teach the boys
how to read and write through a tailored curriculum taken
from the livelihood activities relying on recycling as the
boys are learning Arabic literacy and math from the
process of recycling the empty containers, the school is
integrating other programs to fulfill the needs of the boys
The School teaches them: Computer literacy program,
primary health care and vaccinations program, arts and
social drama program, field trips and camping program
and recycling program.
The School currently has 153 boys enrolled plus 50
mothers and sisters of the boys whom are learning
alphabetic and computers literacy.
5. Why donate to this School ?
The recycling School is currently under a constant threat of
Eviction. They are trying to raise $ 300, 000 To go towards
the purchase of the land and to construct a new facility.
The school is basically working to:
educate marginalized youths, children and women to play an
active role in developing their communities
improve the environment by spreading the concept, practice
and use of waste segregation, recycling and renewable
energies
offer children and youths working in particularly hazardous
circumstances alternative and safe work related to their
professions and comprehensive learning opportunities
advocate the causes of the garbage collectors community, in
particular their integration into the formal sector of solid
waste management
