3. INTRODUCTION
Drug addiction:- Drug addiction is a chronic or brain disease
that causes compulsive drug seeking and use , deposit harmful
consequence to the drug addict and those around them .
A person is said to have developed “Drug addiction” when he/she
believes that optimal state of well being is achieved only through the
actions of the drug .
Addiction also involves other behaviors :-
Finding it difficult to control the need to use the drug
The subjects feels emotionally distressed
Feeling the use of drug to be more important than normal
things like family or work .
4. DRUG DEPENDENCE
It is a state in which use of drugs for personal satisfaction is accorded a
higher priority than other basic needs , often in the face of known risk to
health
Important Drugs known to cause dependence
Drugs that cause severe psychic as well as physical dependence:
Opiate or morphine type: Codeine, heroin
Alcohol –Barbituric type: Ethyl alcohol, barbiturates, meprobamate,
benzodiazepines
Nicotine
Drugs that cause definite psychic but mild physical dependence:
Opiate antagonist type: nalorphine
Amphetamine type: Amphetamine ,methamphetamine
5. TYPE OF DEPENDENCE
There are 2 main type of dependence –
1) Psychological dependence :
It is developed when individual believes that optimal state of well-being is achieved
only through drug action.
Subject feels emotionally distressed if the drug is not taken.
eg : Cocaine
(2) Physical dependence:-
It is characterized by tolerance and withdrawal symptoms when the user is abstinent
Discontinuation of drug results in characteristic withdrawal (abstinent) syndrome .
It necessary the continued presence of drugs to maintain physiological equillibrium.
6. DRUG ABUSE
Drug abuse means unnecessary use of too many drug or inappropriate use
of drug.It refers to use of drug by self medication in a manner and amount
that deviates from the approved medical and social patterns in a given
culture at a given time.
The 2 major patterns of Drug abuse
Continuous use Occasional use
Drug is taken regularly Drug is taken off & on to obtain
pleasure or high ,recreation
The subject wishes to continuously
remain under the influence of drug
For enhancement of sexual experience
e.g. Opioids, alcohol ,sedatives e.g. Amphetamines,cocaine,cannabis

Categories of drugs
1. Soft drug- Do not cause physical addiction, but some of them are
cause psychological dependency, which means that people feel
better when they have the drug. Eg-cannabis ,LSD
2. Hard drug- They cause physical addiction. This drug is more
dangerous than soft drug. Eg- heroin , cocaine.
