• It is important to know who your target
audience is for your product.
• This is because you need to understand that
not everyone is the same and not everyone
will want to buy your product
• The media industry groups people who might
consume a particular product together so
they can target products to this audience
3. Demographics
• The typical characteristics of the people
that buy your product.
• These include age, gender, education,
income, occupation, ethnicity, sexual
orientation and where they live.
4. Standard Occupational Classification System
• This is the Standard Occupational Classification System. It helps to identify a
target audience based on their occupation, and therefore level of education
5. Psychographics
• This goes a bit further than demographics in
trying to identify a target audience. It refers to
including people’s lifestyles and behaviours in
trying to classify them and group them into
target audience groups
• It includes things such as the values they
have, the way they live and the activities they
choose to be involved in, such as sport and
hobbies and where they go on holiday.
