How to Let Your Tears Roll Down Naturally On-stage
1. Let Your Tears Roll Down Naturally On-stage
Tears on your face speak a thousand words. The skill of an actor is incomplete
without this ability to trigger emotion whenever needed. He masters the art of
drawing feelings from his emotional well of mind and harness a genuine feeling that
makes the audience believe the character.
Crying on stage is an insurmountable challenge. When bitter emotions are our
regular companion, sometimes we block them, sometimes we cry and sometimes we
end up burying them. But as an actor expose this rawest form of emotion, be
vulnerable to your feelings to connect the world. Pulling off tears is a tough challenge,
but some tips can help you.
Live your Emotion
To exhibit the essence of the emotion, you need to feel connected to the heart of your
character. The strength of your imagination and empathy for the situation will drive
your emotion and will naturally bring tears in your eyes.
Harness Your Emotional Memory
2. All actors cannot live the life of the character he is playing. But their emotional scenes
also get a standing ovation. Their acting skill lies with the right display of their own
experienced moments of agony and deep despair, longing and betrayal. Such
experiences are the fuel for their emotion. The deeply felt sorrow experience is all it
takes to open our emotional floodgates.
A Phrase of Sorrow
Another genuine way to put yourself in the mind frame where tears roll down naturally
is to apply the phrase for yourself that can trigger your pathos from within. Use
pessimistic phrases for yourself like "Nobody cares for me", "There is no one whom I
can call as my own" etc. Invoke your past bitter experience to bring back your pain,
which will help you to cry. But keep your spirit high to detach yourself from this
mental state immedietely after the act.
Body Language Matters
Crying after a death differs from the crying at a wedding. As an actor, you must
understand the difference to change your posture and body language naturally. For a
better performance, read the script many times, it will help you to know the emotional
range and psychological strength of the character. If you feel the emotion genuinely,
your body language will follow naturally.
We all wish to forget our past bitter experience and live a happy life, but as an actor,
you should develop the skill of bringing back your bitter feelings and trigger your
emotion to cry naturally.
However if none of these techniques work, you have to adopt an artificial way to cry.
Glycerin and onions are some of the common methods to bring tears, while some can
get the tear drops staring into bright lights for long. But I personally will never
recommend this, as natural tears are the best option for any actors.
Try to act naturally whether you want to portray happiness or anger or a sign of
despair. Dive into the pool of your past experience to find what you need. If tears are
hard to display emotion for you, you can also think other ways to convey your sadness
3. - simple silence and profound emptiness can be your weapon. You are the medium of
your character and your audience. It is you who bridges the gap between your
audience and the character. To accomplish, shower all you have got and I am sure
your experience will be profoundly enriching.
