1. • In the preceding unit, you learnt about
problems, their definitions, characteristics and
design of search programs. In this unit, you will
learn about the various aspects of knowledge
representation. Let us start with the observation
that we have no perfect method of Knowledge
representation today. This stems largely from
our ignorance of just what knowledge
representation is. Never the less many methods
have been worked out and used by AI
researchers.
2. In general, in any number system there is
an ordered set of symbols known as digits.
A collection of these digits makes a number
which in general has two parts – Integer and
fractional, set apart by a radix point .
Binary Number:- The number system with
base (or radix is known as the binary
number system. Only two symbols are used
to represent numbers in this system and
these are 0 and 1. These are known as bits.
A group of eight bits is known as a byte and
group of four bits is known as nibble.
3. Octal number system is used in many
computers and microcomputers for entering
data. There are eight combinations of 3-bit
binary numbers. Therefore, sets of 3-bit
binary numbers can be represented by the
octal numbers and this can conveniently be
used for entering data in the computer.
Hexadecimal Number system:- Hexadecimal
number system are 16 combinations of 4-bit
binary numbers can be entered in the
computer in the form of hexadecimal
numbers system is 16 and this required 16
distinct symbols to represent the numbers.
