genre theory
L/O: to be able to analyse print adverts, identify and explain the
conventions and know some ‘Neale’s’ genre theory
Conventions
After analysing a range of perfume adverts, I would argue the conventions of
perfume adverts would be:
• Use of attractive models
• The bottle is featured in advert so audience are familiar with packaging
•

• We will look at genre theory but remember you don’t have to for
exam
• Just to start getting used to theory!

a) Genres involve repetition and novelty - why?
b) Genres are not fixed, but change over time.
TASK:
Look at the vintage ads for Old Spice and answer the following questions:
• Do the vintage ads have conventions we just discussed? How? Why or why not?
• How has the genre of perfume advertising changed?
• Why has this happened?
