2. The sheer scale of Western Australia makes it a world-class road trip destination.
Peerless in its natural beauty, the state is also defined by its broad horizons,
giving any long-distance journey a timeless, wind-in-your-hair sense of adventure.
And whether you’re steering along the coast in a campervan or rumbling through
the wilderness of The Kimberley in a 4WD, that taste of quintessential Western
Australia freedom comes guaranteed. Here are some of the top road trips in the
state.
3. 1. The Coral Coast Highway
For remarkable wildlife encounters you will be talking about over dinner for years,
there is only one choice: the Coral Coast Highway. Stretching 1,200km from Perth
to Exmouth, the route clings to the coast as it winds north, taking in Jurien Bay for
sea lions and Kalbarri for birdlife before ticking off two Unesco World Heritage
areas: Shark Bay, famous for its dolphins and dugongs; and Ningaloo Reef,
where you can spot the big three of whale sharks, humpback whales, and manta
rays.
Overnight stops along the way will be fuelled by lobster shacks and rum tastings,
while daytime adventures will include a flight over the shimmering pink waters of
Hutt Lagoon, a skywalk over the dramatic gorges of Kalbarri National Park, and
ancient stories and bushcraft with an Aboriginal guide in Monkey Mia.
4. 2. Take a gourmet loop
You do not have to stray too far from Perth for adventure – particularly if you are a
lover of quality food and drink. Just a short, three-hour drive gets you to the
Margaret River wine region, renowned for its chardonnays and cabernets, while
nearby towns Pemberton and Manjimup area prime source of truffles.
You will meet passionate producers surfing the waves and hiking along the coastal
trails in the morning and warmly welcoming you in for tastings at the cellar door in
the afternoon.
5. 3. Wind along the magical Warlu Way
An ancient Dreamtime story tells the tale of a giant sea serpent, or warlu, which
slithered out of the ocean and travelled across the arid lands of Western
Australia, leaving waterways in its wake.
This awe-inspiring 1,540-mile road trip takes the legend as its guide, following the
snake’s meandering route from Ningaloo Reef to Broome, via highlights such as
Karijini National Park, the Burrup Peninsula and the Dampier Archipelago.
6. 4. The South West Edge
The Valley of the Giants, Elephant Rocks, Twilight Beach – the sights along
the South, West Edge sounds like destinations in a Tolkien novel. The route
makes some pretty bold claims, including being home to some of the world’s
largest trees and the southern hemisphere’s biggest gathering of wild orcas.
But this is certainly a route of superlatives, with one section – Lucky Bay,
near Esperance – home to Australia’s whitest sands.
