SUB-HAA-NALLAAH ! To understand this parable, which actually was based upon a real incident that happened in our Prophet Muhammad's life time s.a.w., we need to know the reasons or causes for the revelation of these verses ( asbaa-b al-nuzul ): When Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. arrived (during the Hijrah) in Quba (outskirt of Madina) he stayed there and built the first mosque - which he referred to as the " Masjid of Taqwa " upon which was associated the building of strength of Islam through his frequent visits and Da'wah . Some of the hidden enemies of Islam, known as Munaafiquun (Hypocrites) from Bani Ghanam , knew the importance of mosque as the sacred institution of Islam, also built a mosque there, pretending to be similarly advancing the cause of Islam. In reality, they were in league with one Abu 'Ameer , a notorious enemy who fought against the Prophet s.a.w. in Uhud and Hunain , and was then based in Syria. They built this mosque, as a base for him and their followers (the hypocrites), to promote their agenda and activity to undermine Islam and the Prophet's mission, s.a.w. Thus Allah s.w.t. revealed their dangerous plot and warned the Muslims of their evil scheme. This mosque, which Allah s.w.t. referred to as " Masjid Dhiraara wa Kufra " (a mosque built for mischief & infidelity) was then destroyed. WHAT LESSONS CAN WE LEARN FROM THIS ? To imagine that Islam does not have enemies today, who are mounting strategies against it and organizing activities to undermine it, is to be naive and foolish. Our Prophet's s.a.w. life is to be an example of what we may also encounter. As there are undeniably, many Muslims who are hypocrites today (especially those whom we can see as displaying hatred for Islam, although yet they claimed to be Muslims), presence of Masjid Dhiraara (or institutions akin to Masjid Dhiraara ) too can never be denied nor discounted. In fact, as there are more munaafiquun today if compared to the time of the Prophet s.a.w.,, so too will be the presence of such insidious (subtle, sinister & dangerous) institutions, that may have deceived many unwary Muslims and are being built and which seems innocuous. failure to distinguish the true from the false by using the criteria and principles in Revelation and Prophetic Wisdom ( Al-Qur'an was-Sunnah ); compounded by their obsession in borrowing un-Islamic standards from known enemies of Islam; naiveté lack of hadzar (holding to precautions) in many Muslims; easy astonishment to things foreign and disliking own traditions; attraction to forms & systems which they favour more than principles and truth of Islam (such that they even dare to compromise these, just to be accepted as being 'progressive & modern'); All Rights Reserved © Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2011)

loss of Adab and inability to know the true from the bogus amongst leaders and scholars; inherent ignorance of the general masses amongst Muslims, which compounded the disunity and in-fighting amongst the various Muslim groups; some of which seemingly seen as promoting Islam but in reality preferring worldly gains and self-promotion in the world-stage (using: political, economical, social or other jargons as their concern and consideration rather than continuing the mission of the Prophet in spreading Islam to all); All Rights Reserved © Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2011)

These factors, couple with other external factors - of forces inimical towards Islam with their own strategies to weaken and undermine Muslims; their lending support and assistance to these munaafiquun , instigating intra-conflict amongst Muslims - makes the situation to be even worse. In this state of affairs of the Muslims, institutions like 'masjid dhiraara' could easily be started, planted, or even through infiltration by infusing their personnel into existing Islamic institutions. Let us consider the word “ volunteerism ”. My understanding of this term derived from “ volunteer “ – the Latin root “ volu ” meaning “ I want to ” or “ am willing ” Thus “ volunteerism ” refers to : “ works that are undertaken by some one without expecting reward, salary nor remunerations (as the primary concern), but out of some altruistic concern or other personal considerations ”. reference Webster. SOME REFLECTIONS AND COMMENTS ON RELEVANT MALAY TERMS : “ SUKARELA ” : From words “ SUKA ” (to like;) and “ RELA ” (be willing) “ BAKTI ” and “ BUDI ”: Perhaps from Sanskrit words – which may mean “to be of service or doing good, righteous or noble action towards others”. DA’WAH – today, has been understood generally, to refer to every initiatives to call people towards adhering to every teachings of Islam, without any distinction with regards to the audience concerned ( al-mad-’uun ). Unfortunately in Singapore, every religious activity amongst Muslims are termed as “ Da’wah ” activity as though Da’wah is only meant for Muslims, whereas the original meaning refers to “ calling every one towards Islam ” especially the non-Muslims. DA’WAH – in the original sense refers to the calling of all mankind (unbelievers) to Islam. In matters of Islam, we Muslims (in Singapore) generally may have become ‘localized’ (insular and exclusive) to the extent that we only think as though “Islam” is only for us, and about us. All our “ Islamic Da’wah resources ” (if any) are geared only towards the 16% Muslims of the nation’s population (Singapore). We have all along neglected the 84% (non-Muslims). Some Muslims here are so afraid to speak of doing direct “ Da’wah ” towards non-Muslims. They even deemed this (the Prophetic Qur’anic method of Da’wah ) as being confrontational – outdated! Some (indirect) approach towards the non-Muslims in “ Interfaith Dialogue ” events, may perhaps been done. Albeit only because it is encouraged to showcase religious harmony in our nation. Yet, they are claiming this as their efforts in doing “ Da’wah ” (they called it “non-confrontational type”). To ‘ confront ’ does not necessarily mean that one must be “aggressive, intolerant, discourteous etc.” DA’WAH – in the original sense refers to the calling of all mankind (unbelievers) to Islam. The Qur’an already stipulates we must do it: “with wisdom and goodly exhortation, and argue with them in the most kindly manner” So as not to be misunderstood, I am not against Interfaith dialogue, or efforts in building bridges with others, or promotion of religious and racial harmony amongst our comrades and citizens in this, our beloved nation. The concern is our (Muslims’) honesty of claiming to be doing “ Da’wah ” when that effort, when judged by the criteria from Al-Qur’an and As-Sunnah , it may not qualify as to be regarded as “ Da’wah ” in the true sense. Some dare to regard these criterion as archaic. They justify it by saying: “Those old methods are foolish and outdated, we must now be wise. Yet these people conveniently ignored or forgotten that they have been commanded by Allah to be sincere, even if this be hated: DA’WAH – in the original sense refers to the calling of all mankind (unbelievers) to Islam. “ ... be sincere (making religion pure for Allah only), however much the disbelievers be averse –” ( Qur’an: Ghofir: 40: 15 ) All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2011)

And those Muslims engaged in this “Interfaith dialogue” have to be honest and sincerely admit what their motives and objectives for doing so are – Is it for Islamic Da’wah or merely to comply with other agendas? To be in the mainstream? Have they considered or have any regard for the “Usul ad-Da’wah” and the “Fiqh-hud-Da’wah” ? Isn’t Truth supposed to confront falsehood? Afraid to confront and yet claim to be doing “ Da’wah ” ? They like to say: “Let’s accept that everybody is right and nobody is wrong!!?” - LAA-HAU-LA WA LAA-QUW-WA-TA IL-LA BIL-LAAH ! “ Da-’in ” [sing.] (caller; one who invites) – title indicating a high station in the hierarchy of ranks amongst ‘ulama’ of Islam . Title accorded only to those with certain criteria; more as ambassador or emissary of Islam - to call others to al-Islam . This title or appellation of a “ Du-’at ” [pl.] - should not be carelessly used just because a Muslim is doing or helping in work of Da’wah. As Prophet Muhammad s.a.a.w. is the exemplary : “ and as one who invites to Allah's (Grace) by His leave ” , - the task of such a person is indeed wide-ranging . Allah did confer a great favour on the Believers when He sent among them an Messenger from among themselves, rehearsing unto them the Signs of Allah, sanctifying them, and instructing them in Scripture and Wisdom, while, before that, they had been in manifest error.
