2. Indie pop or otherwise known as independent music is the
genre of music used to describe the independence of music
from major commercial record labels. This means that they
do everything independently form recording their music to
publishing their music.
Originated from the 1960’s, Indie music
was mostly associated with the themes
peace, love and anti- war and one of the
most popular bands known for this genre
are Velvet underground.
In the 1990’s, Indie music became
commercialised and were seen
linking to major labels but this
brought an uproar leading to indie
music regain their original identity
by the end of the decade.

4. Indie music is mainly popular among
males aged between 20 and 30 and for
music fans who believe in the idea of
making music for yourself or your
friends, rather than for profit or
popularity.
Many of the artists
or bands of the indie
genre are male
therefore many of
the fans originate
from male but at the
same time can be
more appealing to
females.
5.
6. Indie music is a niche genre in that it does
not direct mainstream appeal as it goes
against commercialized values. The belief
in the independence of the distribution of
music means that it is more appealing to
people who believe in the creativity of
music and self expression rather than the
popularity among the masses.
7. Domino recording label founded by Laurence
Bell and Jacquie Rice is a indie pop and indie
rock label which has signed artists like Arctic
monkeys, the kills and is now one of the
longest running and most successful
independent record labels in the UK.
XL Recordings owned by Richard
Russel has worked with The
Prodigy, Radiohead, The White
Stripes, Dizzee Rascal, M.I.A.,
Vampire Weekend, The xx, Gil
Scott-Heron, Tyler, the Creator,
and Adele. The label releases
albums worldwide and operates
across a range of genres.
8. The magazine Q covers some aspects of indie music. Q is a popular
music magazine published monthly in the United Kingdom and the
total circulation of each issue is around 80,418.
The Usual features in Q magazine are:
•The Q50, where the magazine lists the top
50 essential tracks of the month;
• Cash for Questions, in which a famous
celeb/band answers questions sent in by
readers — who win £25 if their question is
printed;
• Rewind, in which they take us back in time
through the history of music via archive
issues of Q.

10. Indie music is headed in a positive direction as
mainstream acceptance of streaming music, social
media, social recommendation apps, social sharing,
cloud computing, and everything-mobile has created the
perfect environment for artists to get their music heard
and to create a meaningful community of passionate
fans.
Although this genre is niche, it still
maintains its originality and with the
rise in popularity among the bands
like Arctic monkeys, indie music is
seeming becoming popular but still
holding on to its integrity.
