Maggie "Mag" Cunningham James Britt, was the youngest daughter born to the late Evroy W.
Cunningham and Henerietta James Cunningham on April 8, 1932, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
She went on to glory on early Saturday morning, June 14, 2014.
As a child, she and her two sisters received Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior and were baptized
at Mount Zion Baptist Church, in Winston-Salem where her parents were long time church members
and her father (Evroy) was a Deacon.
Mrs. Britt attended the public schools of Winston-Salem, Forsyth County, North Carolina graduating
from Simon G. Atkins High School in 1950. She received a Bachelor of Science Degree in
Mathematics from North Carolina Central College in Durham, North Carolina in 1954. She
continued her education earning a Master's Degree in Mathematics from the University of
Bridgeport, Bridgeport, Connecticut in 1970.
A long time teacher, educator and mentor, she began her teaching career in Buford, South Carolina
and Concord, North Carolina before eventually moving to Connecticut where she taught in the
Stamford Public School system in Stamford, Connecticut for thirty-nine years; retiring in 1994. Even
in her retirement, she continued to mentor and encourage young people to not only finish high
school but continue their education.
Mrs. Britt was longstanding member of Union Baptist Church in Stamford, Connecticut before
relocating to Elgin, South Carolina. There she served as an Adult Class Church School Teacher, Co-
chairperson of the Pictorial Directory Committee, member of the Finance and Trustee Ministries,
Capital Stewardship Campaign Ministry, North Carolina Club, and the Centennial Committee. She
also took on the responsibility of becoming the Church Treasurer. She also served on the Board of
Christian Education and was a member of the Original Women's Choir. In addition, she rendered
service on the Board of Operation Right Direction which provided for the implementation of an after
school program for youth which focused upon opportunities for academic acceleration and career
awareness projects. Sister Britt additionally enjoyed membership on numerous special day
committees.
Mrs. Britt's community service in Connecticut included active membership in Alpha Chapter of the
Delta Kappa Gamma Society which is a society for professional educators, and the Negro Business
and Professional Women's Club. She also served as the coordinator and administrator of the
Yerwood Center Summer Academic Program for high school students. A renowned mathematics
teacher at Westhill High School in Stamford, Connecticut, she provided skills and abilities as a
mentor to many students.
She was initiated into Westchester Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. A
Golden Life Member of the sorority, she was a Charter Member of the Fairfield County Alumnae
Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta, Inc. where she served as the Charter Financial Secretary, Treasurer,
Scholarship Committee Chairperson, and rendered service on the Membership Intake Committee,
Symposium and Jabberwock Committees, as well as working in other official capacities.

2. Upon moving to South Carolina, Mrs. Britt joined the Camden Alumnae Chapter.
When Mrs. Britt retired to Elgin, South Carolina, she became a member of the Fort Clark Baptist
Church and Chaired the Education Scholarship Committee, was a member of the Trustee Board and
Pastor's Aid Ministry, and was a member of the Women's Ministry. Many church members
appreciated her phone calls and words of encouragement.
A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, sorer and friend, she is survived by Reverend
Jackson Britt, Jr., husband of thirty-four years; two children, Mr. Millard N. (Cheryl) James of Belews
Creek, North Carolina, and Ms. Jacqueline Britt-Crudup of Elgin, South Carolina; grandchildren, a
beloved grandson, Phillip Navarro James of Atlanta, Georgia, Shaneria Lashay Crudup and Ashley
Lashawn Crudup both of Atlanta. Georgia, Gerund Anthony Crudup and Keith Farlando Crudup both
of Delray Beach, Florida; two sisters, Mrs. Eula Mae Cunningham Saunders of Clayton, North
Carolina and Mrs. Willie Mae Cunningham Rice of Winston-Salem, North Carolina; two sisters-i-
-law, Ms. Doris Britt McGhee of Elgin, South Carolina and Mrs. Barbara Britt Truss of Queens, New
York; one brother-in-law, Mr. George Russell (Johnney Mae) Britt of Columbia, South Carolina; a
host of nieces and nephews most notably Jacqueline Saunders Merritt of Clayton, North Carolina,
Cheryl Rice (Joseph) Henderson of Bowie, Maryland, Rodney V. Rice of Baltimore, Maryland, Donna
McGhee of Lithonia, Georgia, and Alan T. (Mary) Britt of Elgin, South Carolina; plus many adoptive
sons, daughters and grandchlidren who claim Mrs. Britt as a family member; devoted friends, Mrs.
Elvena Parks of Elgin, South Carolina and Mrs. Savannah Thomas of Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
Mrs. Britt was a blessing to everyone that knew and loved her and she will be painfully missed.
Funeral service for Mrs. Maggie C. James Britt will be held Saturday, June 21, 2014, 1:00 P.M. at
Fort Clark Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery. Viewing will be 11:00 A.M. to 6:00
P.M. on Friday at Collins Funeral Home in Camden and one hour prior to the service on Saturday at
the church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Emily Elsworth Foundation, 2623
Stewart Street, Camden, South Carolina 29020. Collins Funeral Home is in charge of the
arrangements.
