Day Apart 2021
The Rev. Dr. Lawrence F. Sherwood, Jr. was born on
December 13, 1925, in Ronceverte, WV, and died on September 6,
2019.
He graduated from West Virginia Wesleyan where he
obtained his Docter of Divinity degree, and the United Theological
Seminary. Dr. Sherwood was ordained an Elder in the West Virginia
Conference of the Methodist Church in 1950.
He served churches in Petersburg, WV, Glenville, WV,
Oakland, MD, Bluefield, WV, and Keyser, WV. He was also District
Superintendent of the Lewisburg (now Greenbrier) District and various
UMC Conference Committees. A Methodist historian, Dr. Sherwood
has written numerous articles on Methodist history, especially WV
Methodism and Bishop Francis Asbury and was the recipient of the
Ministry of Memory Award from the Historical Society of the UMS.
Active in his community, he was secretary of the Hospice of Garrett
County Board of Directors, a member of the Garrett County Historical
society, a 50-year member of the Oakland Lodge No 192 AF&M, and
the Oakland-Mountain Lake Park Lions Club.
He is survived by his wife, Hazel, to who, he was married on
December 29, 1947. He is survived by four children, 11 grandchildren,
and one great grandchild. He was preceded in death by a daughter
and a sister.
St. Paul’s United Methodist Church
Elzia “Louise” Morgan Wilson was born on August 15, 1937
in Massillon, Ohio. She died on October 6, 2019, at Ruby Memorial
Hospital in Morgantown, WV, at age 82. Louise lived most of her adult
life in Detroit, Michigan with her husband of 61 years, John. They had
two daughter and one son.
She was an English teacher and debate coach until she left
work to care for her children. As a stay-at-home mom, she was active
in her church and with her garden.
She and her husband moved to Garrett County in the mid
1990s and made that their permanent home. As a supportive member
of the UMW at St. Paul’s-Oakland, Louise served on the executive team
and was very active in the Sunday School. She was also active in the
Mt. Laurel Garden Club and served as its president for two years. She
especially enjoyed spending time with her six grandchildren.
She is survived by her husband John, two daughters, a son,
and six grandchildren who she loved spending time with.
Helen Terrant Atwill was born on May 5, 1924, and died and
December 31,2019. Helen was born in Washington, D.C. and lived in Silver
Spring, MD. She and her husband, Scott, met in junior high school and
were reunited when he returned from service with the US Coast Guard
during World War II. They were married more than 74 years and had four
children, eight grandchildren, one great grandchild, and one great-great
grandchild.
They lived in the Sky Valley area of Garrett county more than 30
years and were active participants of St. Paul’s UMC-Oakland. Helen was a
member of the Ruth (formerly Abbe-Nell) Circle of UMW. She could be
relied upon to provide a dessert for special events.
Helen’s hands were never idle – she was an excellent seamstress
and enjoyed making clothes for her American Doll collection. She
crocheted countless hats and booties sets for the newborn babies and
Garrett Regional Medical Center (formerly Garrett County Memorial
Hospital) where she volunteered. It was not unusual for her to make
ornaments at Christmastime from recycled materials and then give them to
UMW members and friends.
Helen and Scott moved to an assisted living facility in Frederick ,
MD, near family, in December 2019, where she died. A memorial service is
pending as of mid- April 2020.
Ruth Isabel Grieb died January 14, 2020, at the age of 93
in Mt. Holly, NJ. She was born in Hutton, MD and raised in West
Virginia. She resided in New Jersey for 38 years and retired after
30 years as the manager of the Payroll Department at the
Helene Fuld Medical Center. Following retirement she moved to
Garrett County and became a part of the life and work of St.
Paul’s United Methodist Church-Oakland.
Over the years she enjoyed singing in the church
choir, gardening, reading, sewing, quilting and the beautiful
outdoors. She was a member of the Abbie-Nell Circle of the
UMW until she found it necessary to return to New Jersey to be
closer to family.
She is survived by a son and daughter, four
grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and many nieces,
nephews, family, and friends.
Funeral services were private. Internment was in
Garrett County Memorial Gardens in Oakland, MD.
Patricia Joan (Law) Shelton – “Miss Daisy” –
was born on June 15, 1952 in Baltimore, MD, and peacefully
passed away on February 22, 2020 in Oakland, MD. She
obtained her master’s degree from Townson State Teacher’s
College (now Towson University), where she was an organ
student, with an additional 60 credits from Loyola University in
Baltimore. Prior to retirement Pat was employed as a vocal
music teacher for the Baltimore County Board of Education.
While living in Baltimore area she shared her varied musical
talents with churches in the area, alongside her husband Tom.
While there she founded and directed “The Bellstars”, an
English hand bell choir made up entirely of special needs
children and young adults. One of Pat’s greatest joys was
working with children especially those with special needs. Her
hobbies included cross stitching and traveling during the winter
months, as well as playing the piano, organ, and harp an
teaching sign language. She spent countless hours volunteering
to make children’s lives happier. When she died she served as
the organist at St. Paul’s-Oakland sharing her talents with
various groups in the church. She is survived by her loving
husband of 47 years, two sons, three grandchildren, two
brothers, a sister, sister-in-law and numerous nieces and
nephews.
Phyllis Blanche Johnson Helbig was a native of
Garrett County. She was born on January 27, 1929, in Oakland,
one of 12 children. She died at Goodwill Mennonite Home in
Grantsville on April 9, 2020.
Her grandfather was a Methodist pastor and served
St. Paul’s-Oakland. Over the years she and her family were
active in the work of the church. Growing up she and her
siblings worked at the family business, NuWay Laundry and Dry
Cleaning. She married her husband Gene, Sr., on January 10,
1949. They were married 57 years until his death in 2006, and
had five children.
She worked at Helbig’s Jewelers in Oakland more than
30 years. She was an accomplished bowler and a great cook,
especially her buckwheat cakes, mac and cheese, special
holiday caramels, and kid’s birthday meals chop suey. She was
also an excellent seamstress and made costumes for Garrett
Choral Society and others. Two grandsons smile when they
remember here driving and parking abilities at Garrett 8
Cinemas.
Phyllis is survived by a brother, her five children and
their spouses, and 12 grandchildren. Private graveside services
were held on April 14 at the Oakland Cemetery.
Anne Marie (Vargo) Meade was born
in Waverly, NY on August 22, 1944. She died
on May 22, 2020. Anne and her husband
retired from the Baltimore, MD area and
moved to Oakland, MD. Over the years she
and William (Bill) were very active in the
church. At St. Paul’s-Oakland, Anne was a
member of the Abbe-Nell (now Naomi) Circle
and very involved with the Sew Crafty Ladies.
She enjoyed knitting and made hundreds of
blankets, hats, and gloves for many
organizations, including the Linus Project. She
also enjoyed puzzle games, and it was a rare
time that there was not a cat as part of the
family. She is survived by her husband, two
sons, eight grandchildren, two great
grandchildren, five brothers and a sister.
Mary Anne (Facemire) McLellan was born
on May 16, 1931 in Fairmont, WV and died at the
Masonic Village, Sewickley, PA, on July 4, 2020. Mary
Anne is survived by her husband of 67 years and was
preceded in death by a brother and son David Mark.
Mary Anne graduated from the West Fairmont HS in
1949 and then graduated in 19553 from the Duke
University School of Nursing. She returned to Duke
majoring in psychiatric nursing and moved to
Pittsburgh where she was employed by the UP School
of Nursing Western Psychiatric Hospital and
subsequently became board president. She had a
love of people and you were not with her too long
until you knew you had a long-time friend. She held
leadership positions various organizations (OES [67
years], Friends Aware [Cumberland, MD]), Girl
Scouts, sub-group leader, and a past president of the
local UMW organization. She is survived by her
husband Ed and a daughter Mindi.
Margaret “Midge” Robinson McFarland was
born on October 14, 1925 in New Philadelphia, Ohio and
passed away on December 1, 2020. Her father’s job as a
supervisor in the local steel mill took the family to
Vandergrift, Penna, where she met her future husband,
Charles, who was the newspaper carrier. “Midge” as she
was known graduated from Muskingum College with a
teaching degree in math, science, and chemistry. She and
Charles were married in 1946. She was active in the
church working with youth and hosting women’s groups.
In 1999, following Chuck’s retirement, they built a home at
Deep Creek Lake and became part of the like of St. Paul’s-
Oakland. On winter afternoons she could be found in the
game room sewing, watching Steelers football and tending
the fire. Midge loved to quilt and cross stitch and leaves a
legacy of beautiful needlework. At St. Paul’s, she was
active in a sub-group and UMW. In her early 90s she
moved with a daughter to Winchester, VA, where she
passed away. She is survived by a son and two daughters,
eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Karol Ann (Kallaway) Goodman was
born on March 8, 1938, and died at Garrett
Regional Medical Center on April 19, 2021. Karol
was originally from Frederick, MD, and had
resided in Oakland following her husband’s
retirement. She was a former teacher in
Frederick area. Karol had a love of people. She
warmly greeted visitors on Sunday mornings and
was a faithful attendee of the Adult Sunday
School and Bible study sessions. During her
illness and prior to her death she talked about
how anxious she was to return to those times.
Karol was a member of the Naomi Circle, and
loved the socialization that was a part of the
monthly Soul Food gatherings. She was preceded
in death by her husband James (Jim) Leonard and
is survived by two sons, six grandchildren, a
sister, and a dear friend who was “like a
daughter,” Jean Cheshire.
MARGARET (MAGGIE) MOTICHKA
12/06/43 – 12/04/2019
Maggie was born in Indiana. She was active with Augusta
United Methodist Women until her health would no longer
permit it. She loved being with God’s people. Maggie was
very artistic and a great cook. She had a wonderful laugh. She
was loved very much by her husband, Al, her children,
grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She is missed by all
who knew her.

MERILYN BARR TURNER
08/08/1935 – 01/19/2021
Merilyn was a kind and loving member of the Augusta United
Women. She loved reading and embroidery. She held many
jobs over her life, including Police Matron in Baltimore, Wal-
Mart greeter, and kitchen supervisor at the Regional Jail in
Augusta, WV. She worked into her 80’s. She had two
daughters, three grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren,
and three great-great-grandchildren. We miss her
very much.

Capon Bridge United Methodist
Louise Riggleman was a 50 year+
member of the United Methodist Women, and
a member of the Capon Bridge Charge UMW
since moving from Romney to Capon Bridge in
1986. She was a homemaker, and very talented
seamstress. Louise loved her family, her church
family and choir, music and singing. She
enjoyed her Senior Center fellowship as well.
She could always be counted on to make her
homemade rolls for a Church or Community
function.

Grove Street United Methodist Church
Kitty Lou Barr was a member of the
UMW and Church Choir. She always had a
smile and hugs for the students at the Vo-
tech where she worked as administrative
assistant.
Family meal night as her house was the
highlight of her week. She passed
November 23, 2019.

Katie Kesner was a member of the
UMW and Hedrick Chapel Church. She
enjoyed her walks and gardening. She
retired from Joan Curtis Mfg.
As a mother of ten, family was the center
of her life. She passed December 29, 2019
at the age of 95.

Maxine Bergdoll Ruby was a
member of the UMW. She was an
outstanding homemaker who enjoyed
reading, cooking, and trying new recipes.
She was very faithful in her attendance and
support of Grove Street Church. She
passed October 15, 2020 at the age of 84.
CLARA “PEGGY” DAVIS
JUNE 16, 2018
Peggy Davis served over 50 years as a United
Methodist Woman. She started as Ladies Aid, then Women’s
Society of Christian Service, and then renamed United
Methodist Women.
She was a very dedicated, loving, and committed
Christian woman, who we all loved. She was a true sister in
Christ.
Peggy and her husband, John, were married for 61
years. They were blessed with two children,
four grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.

Eileen was born October 05, 1930 and passed away on
December 16, 2019.
She was active in her community and was the historian
at Hott’s Chapel Church.

Judy was born November 06, 1940 and passed away on May
10, 2020. She was a loving mother, Grandmother, and Great
Grandmother. She had volunteered at the Augusta Fire Dept.

Criselta “CRIS” B. BEAN

Cris Bean, 94, passed away at Hampshire Health Center.
Cris was a homemaker, loving mother and grandmother. She loved the outdoors. She was
a member of Hott’s Chapel United Methodist Church for over 50 years and a member of
the United Methodist Women’s group.

FAYE WAYNE
Faye retired to Romney, WV after a career in Washington, DC.
She was very artistic by nature and contributed her gifts to
the United Methodist Women for many years. Faye lived 90
years and is now home with her Lord.

RUTH WHITEMAN
Ruth was a life long West Virginian. She completed her career
in Home Economics in Hampshire County. Ruth was a long
time, very active member of the United Methodist Women.
She served many years as President of the Romney First unit,
as well as other offices.

LEONA KIDWELL
Leona passed away July 9, 2020. She was an active member
of the Romney First United Methodist Women. She was
known for her great cooking skills. She cooked for meals at
her church and many Veterans meals. She was a kind,
faithful, and generous member of the church and the
United Methodist Women.

Iliff Maphis passed away at the age of 88.
She was active in the community and church.
She always supported the Methodist church
and the United Methodist Women.

Pauline was 100 years old when she went home to be with
the Lord. Prior to her passing, she spent many years in a long
term facility.
In her younger years, Pauline was active in the
United Methodist Women.

Maxine lived 88 years in service to others.
She was a dedicated mother and grandmother. She shared
her gifts and talents in helping The United Methodist Women

Jean passed away in Ohio on April 7, 2021. She was a long
time active member of Romney First United Methodist
Women. She was well known for her great sense of humor
and her cheerful smile. She faithfully contributed to the
United Methodist Women projects. She was always generous
and kind.

Gina passed away May 7, 2021.
She was a devoted member of Romney United Methodist Church and
United Methodist Women. She was involved with activities and
projects with the UMW for fifty years. She served as leader of
reading programs and always urged members to read.

St. John’s United Methodist Women
Linda Lee Lawrence was born March 31, 1945. She was a dear wife,
mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was a bright and shining
light in her community of Parsons, West Virginia and a faithful member of St.
John’s United Methodist Women. Linda served as the “Sunshine Girl” for our
unit and sent a carnation to shut-ins on their birthday. She had a way of
spreading God’s love to everyone she met and spread sunshine everywhere
she went. Linda went to be with her Savior, Jesus Christ, on August 5, 2020,
where she waits for us at the gates of pearl.
St. Paul’s (Patterson Creek) United Methodist
Jacqueline (Jackie) (Bradfield) Miller was
born on August 8, 1956 and died on June 26, 2019.
Jackie was a United Methodist Woman for many years.
She was a member of St. Paul’s (Patterson Creek) unit
and held the office of secretary when she passed. Some
time ago Jackie wrote a letter for the district newsletter
about belonging to U. M. W. and what it meant to her
and encouraged women to join as her mother (Annabel
Bradfield) had encouraged her. Jackie fought a
courageous battle with Multiple Sclerosis and
Myelodysplasia Syndrome for many years. She
attended meetings when she could and we usually met
at local restaurants because she like to get out and
enjoy herself. There were many times when she
couldn’t attend and we ladies tool the meeting to her.
Jackie was a fantastic lady and loved her Savior Jesus
Christ. She is sadly missed.
St. Paul’s (Patterson Creek) United Methodist
Joan J. (Galluzzo) Seeders was
born on June 11, 1936 and died on July
27, 2019. Although Catholic by faith Joan
joined St. Paul’s (Patterson Creek) U.M.W.
because she attended church there and
lived in the community. Joan was in Dawn
View Nursing Center when she passed.
She has been a member for several years
and at times we ladies took the meeting
to her so she could participate. Joan was
one of a kind and she is sadly missed.
GLENNA MAY HARVEY SWEITZER
5-02-1923 - 04-04-2020
GLENNA, also known as Pete, Aunt Pete, and Granny, was our
church mother. She was always smiling and encouraging,
making everyone feel like they were her favorite. She had
perfect attendance on the Sunday School charts each year.
Someone in her family would bring her to church, as she
never drove. At the Thanksgiving service, she always brought
her “Thank offering” box.
GLENNA loved puzzles, her picture books, and music. She
would show her pictures and laughingly tell how she had a
couch full of each generation. GLENNA had a musical family,
playing strings. Her favorite hymn was “Turn Your Eyes Upon
Jesus”.
We miss her.
SWANTON UNITED METHODIST CHURCH
EILEEN MAXINE FITZWATER CUSTER
08-15-1933 – 12-10-2020
EILEEN received her engagement ring through the mail from
the Panama Canal from her sweetheart of 63 years. She
served her Lord and family as a homemaker, crocheting baby
sweaters for family and friends and afghans to raffle for the
Swanton Community Center.
EILEEN helped make a “welcoming table” at the church. She
enjoyed putting pickles and tomatoes in hoagie bags and
slicing apples for apple dumplings. People always asked for
her “famous” applesauce cake. We understand her niece is
continuing the tradition.

DOROTHY FAYE FRIEND BECKMAN
03-31-1941 – 02-17-2021
Dotty was a good friend, never saying an unkind word. She
always gave a smile and made a place for the in-laws at the
family functions.
Dotty loved her Lord, church, and family. She and her
husband adopted two sons. She had one grandson and one
great grandson, always showing photos.
At church, Dotty took care of the baked table and made
scalloped potatoes for the church funerals. She loved her
flower garden and crocheting. Dotty made the church
Christmas tree skirt and manger scene. A little girl wanted to
take the Baby Jesus home.
SWANTON UNITED METHODIST CHURCH
Sarah Jane Albright died on September 5,
2020. Sarah Jane loved her home town of
Westernport, MD, and was vitally involved in many
aspects, such as Charter Member of the Westernport
Heritage Society and two museums, Library
Contributor, Town Beautification efforts, and of
course, her church. She was a very active Methodist
and participated in all areas possible, even the
creation of needed programs. She helped organize the
Tri-Towns after school program at Trinity United
Methodist Church. She was one of the church women
to create the bargain basement to help fund it. She
was a 50 year member and officer of every church
organization, especially all the women’s programs.
We depended on Sarah Jane and will miss her
inspiration and leadership.
TRINITY UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, PIEDMONT
SARAH BROOKFIELD
OCTOBER 25, 1951 – NOVEMBER 14, 2020
Sarah and her husband were in a car accident several months ago and only her
husband survived, being in the hospital and nursing home since.
Sarah always volunteered to help, especially with our soup and baked potato meals and
Friday community lunches. She was very creative and occasionally made her own
greeting and all-occasion cards. When asked, Sarah prepared inspirational programs for
our meetings. She and her husband were both retired when they moved to
Wardensville. They were both interested and involved in car racing. She handled the
racing flags. Sarah would say, “we’re off to the races” and they would leave for several
days.

Edith Bayne Morrison
November 11, 1928 – May 24, 2019
Edith was a very pleasant lady that was always smiling. She
attended our United Methodist Women’s meetings, as well as
our worship services, on a regular basis. We always knew we
could count on her to be there. She enjoyed attending the
dinners that area charity groups held. She was always willing
to help with out activities. Her only daughter was deceased,
but she had two granddaughters tat she adored.
WARDENSVILLE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH
White United Methodist Church
Charlotte Mousch was born on January 27, 1940 and died on December 17, 2018. Charlotte was a member of
White United Methodist Church, where she had taught Sunday School and Bible School. She was President of United
Methodist Women. She played a major role in Church Women United, as well as a volunteer for Community Action
working in the Brown Bag Program. She was a 4-H Leader, helping to start Ryan Glade 4-H in 1950. She enjoyed
reading and did the Reading Program every year for UMW. She enjoyed quilting and helped our local United
Methodist Women’s group make several quilts, donated to House of Hope. She taught us about recycling and showed
us by example. She never met a stranger, she gave her love freely to others, a sweet and lovely lady, a great smile and
laugh, she had her own special charm and wit. She loved life and lived it to the fullest.
Janet Mae Tichnell was born on May 16, 1925 and died August 23, 2020. Janet Mae would send cards and
notes, saying, Jesus Loves You And I do too!
Janet Mae was a member of White United Methodist Church. Over the years she probable held and served in every
position in the church. She was a member of the United Methodist Women, holding offices in it as well, she was a
Sunday School Teacher, served on the Administrative Board, Pastor Parish Relation Committee, and served on the
charge committees for many years. Janet Mae served on the South Garrett Cooperative of the United Methodist
Church. She was involved with their mission work. One time they raised enough money to get a well dug for a family in
the community.
Janet Mae was a seamstress and a quilter. She shared her love and compassion for people by making and quilting
quilts for the House of Hope for persons and families in need. She made several quilts a year and donated them to the
House of Hope. I am sure that you all have quilts from Mom and Grandma.
I am sure she has prayed for all of us and we have asked her to pray for needs in each of our lives. Janet Mae was a
woman full of wisdom.

  • 2. The Rev. Dr. Lawrence F. Sherwood, Jr. was born on December 13, 1925, in Ronceverte, WV, and died on September 6, 2019. He graduated from West Virginia Wesleyan where he obtained his Docter of Divinity degree, and the United Theological Seminary. Dr. Sherwood was ordained an Elder in the West Virginia Conference of the Methodist Church in 1950. He served churches in Petersburg, WV, Glenville, WV, Oakland, MD, Bluefield, WV, and Keyser, WV. He was also District Superintendent of the Lewisburg (now Greenbrier) District and various UMC Conference Committees. A Methodist historian, Dr. Sherwood has written numerous articles on Methodist history, especially WV Methodism and Bishop Francis Asbury and was the recipient of the Ministry of Memory Award from the Historical Society of the UMS. Active in his community, he was secretary of the Hospice of Garrett County Board of Directors, a member of the Garrett County Historical society, a 50-year member of the Oakland Lodge No 192 AF&M, and the Oakland-Mountain Lake Park Lions Club. He is survived by his wife, Hazel, to who, he was married on December 29, 1947. He is survived by four children, 11 grandchildren, and one great grandchild. He was preceded in death by a daughter and a sister.
  • 3. St. Paul’s United Methodist Church Elzia “Louise” Morgan Wilson was born on August 15, 1937 in Massillon, Ohio. She died on October 6, 2019, at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, WV, at age 82. Louise lived most of her adult life in Detroit, Michigan with her husband of 61 years, John. They had two daughter and one son. She was an English teacher and debate coach until she left work to care for her children. As a stay-at-home mom, she was active in her church and with her garden. She and her husband moved to Garrett County in the mid 1990s and made that their permanent home. As a supportive member of the UMW at St. Paul’s-Oakland, Louise served on the executive team and was very active in the Sunday School. She was also active in the Mt. Laurel Garden Club and served as its president for two years. She especially enjoyed spending time with her six grandchildren. She is survived by her husband John, two daughters, a son, and six grandchildren who she loved spending time with.
  • 4. Helen Terrant Atwill was born on May 5, 1924, and died and December 31,2019. Helen was born in Washington, D.C. and lived in Silver Spring, MD. She and her husband, Scott, met in junior high school and were reunited when he returned from service with the US Coast Guard during World War II. They were married more than 74 years and had four children, eight grandchildren, one great grandchild, and one great-great grandchild. They lived in the Sky Valley area of Garrett county more than 30 years and were active participants of St. Paul’s UMC-Oakland. Helen was a member of the Ruth (formerly Abbe-Nell) Circle of UMW. She could be relied upon to provide a dessert for special events. Helen’s hands were never idle – she was an excellent seamstress and enjoyed making clothes for her American Doll collection. She crocheted countless hats and booties sets for the newborn babies and Garrett Regional Medical Center (formerly Garrett County Memorial Hospital) where she volunteered. It was not unusual for her to make ornaments at Christmastime from recycled materials and then give them to UMW members and friends. Helen and Scott moved to an assisted living facility in Frederick , MD, near family, in December 2019, where she died. A memorial service is pending as of mid- April 2020.
  • 5. Ruth Isabel Grieb died January 14, 2020, at the age of 93 in Mt. Holly, NJ. She was born in Hutton, MD and raised in West Virginia. She resided in New Jersey for 38 years and retired after 30 years as the manager of the Payroll Department at the Helene Fuld Medical Center. Following retirement she moved to Garrett County and became a part of the life and work of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church-Oakland. Over the years she enjoyed singing in the church choir, gardening, reading, sewing, quilting and the beautiful outdoors. She was a member of the Abbie-Nell Circle of the UMW until she found it necessary to return to New Jersey to be closer to family. She is survived by a son and daughter, four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, family, and friends. Funeral services were private. Internment was in Garrett County Memorial Gardens in Oakland, MD.
  • 6. Patricia Joan (Law) Shelton – “Miss Daisy” – was born on June 15, 1952 in Baltimore, MD, and peacefully passed away on February 22, 2020 in Oakland, MD. She obtained her master’s degree from Townson State Teacher’s College (now Towson University), where she was an organ student, with an additional 60 credits from Loyola University in Baltimore. Prior to retirement Pat was employed as a vocal music teacher for the Baltimore County Board of Education. While living in Baltimore area she shared her varied musical talents with churches in the area, alongside her husband Tom. While there she founded and directed “The Bellstars”, an English hand bell choir made up entirely of special needs children and young adults. One of Pat’s greatest joys was working with children especially those with special needs. Her hobbies included cross stitching and traveling during the winter months, as well as playing the piano, organ, and harp an teaching sign language. She spent countless hours volunteering to make children’s lives happier. When she died she served as the organist at St. Paul’s-Oakland sharing her talents with various groups in the church. She is survived by her loving husband of 47 years, two sons, three grandchildren, two brothers, a sister, sister-in-law and numerous nieces and nephews.
  • 7. Phyllis Blanche Johnson Helbig was a native of Garrett County. She was born on January 27, 1929, in Oakland, one of 12 children. She died at Goodwill Mennonite Home in Grantsville on April 9, 2020. Her grandfather was a Methodist pastor and served St. Paul’s-Oakland. Over the years she and her family were active in the work of the church. Growing up she and her siblings worked at the family business, NuWay Laundry and Dry Cleaning. She married her husband Gene, Sr., on January 10, 1949. They were married 57 years until his death in 2006, and had five children. She worked at Helbig’s Jewelers in Oakland more than 30 years. She was an accomplished bowler and a great cook, especially her buckwheat cakes, mac and cheese, special holiday caramels, and kid’s birthday meals chop suey. She was also an excellent seamstress and made costumes for Garrett Choral Society and others. Two grandsons smile when they remember here driving and parking abilities at Garrett 8 Cinemas. Phyllis is survived by a brother, her five children and their spouses, and 12 grandchildren. Private graveside services were held on April 14 at the Oakland Cemetery.
  • 8. Anne Marie (Vargo) Meade was born in Waverly, NY on August 22, 1944. She died on May 22, 2020. Anne and her husband retired from the Baltimore, MD area and moved to Oakland, MD. Over the years she and William (Bill) were very active in the church. At St. Paul’s-Oakland, Anne was a member of the Abbe-Nell (now Naomi) Circle and very involved with the Sew Crafty Ladies. She enjoyed knitting and made hundreds of blankets, hats, and gloves for many organizations, including the Linus Project. She also enjoyed puzzle games, and it was a rare time that there was not a cat as part of the family. She is survived by her husband, two sons, eight grandchildren, two great grandchildren, five brothers and a sister.
  • 9. Mary Anne (Facemire) McLellan was born on May 16, 1931 in Fairmont, WV and died at the Masonic Village, Sewickley, PA, on July 4, 2020. Mary Anne is survived by her husband of 67 years and was preceded in death by a brother and son David Mark. Mary Anne graduated from the West Fairmont HS in 1949 and then graduated in 19553 from the Duke University School of Nursing. She returned to Duke majoring in psychiatric nursing and moved to Pittsburgh where she was employed by the UP School of Nursing Western Psychiatric Hospital and subsequently became board president. She had a love of people and you were not with her too long until you knew you had a long-time friend. She held leadership positions various organizations (OES [67 years], Friends Aware [Cumberland, MD]), Girl Scouts, sub-group leader, and a past president of the local UMW organization. She is survived by her husband Ed and a daughter Mindi.
  • 10. Margaret “Midge” Robinson McFarland was born on October 14, 1925 in New Philadelphia, Ohio and passed away on December 1, 2020. Her father’s job as a supervisor in the local steel mill took the family to Vandergrift, Penna, where she met her future husband, Charles, who was the newspaper carrier. “Midge” as she was known graduated from Muskingum College with a teaching degree in math, science, and chemistry. She and Charles were married in 1946. She was active in the church working with youth and hosting women’s groups. In 1999, following Chuck’s retirement, they built a home at Deep Creek Lake and became part of the like of St. Paul’s- Oakland. On winter afternoons she could be found in the game room sewing, watching Steelers football and tending the fire. Midge loved to quilt and cross stitch and leaves a legacy of beautiful needlework. At St. Paul’s, she was active in a sub-group and UMW. In her early 90s she moved with a daughter to Winchester, VA, where she passed away. She is survived by a son and two daughters, eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
  • 11. Karol Ann (Kallaway) Goodman was born on March 8, 1938, and died at Garrett Regional Medical Center on April 19, 2021. Karol was originally from Frederick, MD, and had resided in Oakland following her husband’s retirement. She was a former teacher in Frederick area. Karol had a love of people. She warmly greeted visitors on Sunday mornings and was a faithful attendee of the Adult Sunday School and Bible study sessions. During her illness and prior to her death she talked about how anxious she was to return to those times. Karol was a member of the Naomi Circle, and loved the socialization that was a part of the monthly Soul Food gatherings. She was preceded in death by her husband James (Jim) Leonard and is survived by two sons, six grandchildren, a sister, and a dear friend who was “like a daughter,” Jean Cheshire.
  • 12. MARGARET (MAGGIE) MOTICHKA 12/06/43 – 12/04/2019 Maggie was born in Indiana. She was active with Augusta United Methodist Women until her health would no longer permit it. She loved being with God’s people. Maggie was very artistic and a great cook. She had a wonderful laugh.   • 13. MERILYN BARR TURNER 08/08/1935 – 01/19/2021 Merilyn was a kind and loving member of the Augusta United Women. She loved reading and embroidery. She held many jobs over her life, including Police Matron in Baltimore, Wal- Mart greeter, and kitchen supervisor at the Regional Jail in Augusta, WV. She worked into her 80’s. Capon Bridge United Methodist Louise Riggleman was a 50 year+ member of the United Methodist Women, and a member of the Capon Bridge Charge UMW since moving from Romney to Capon Bridge in 1986. She was a homemaker, and very talented seamstress. Louise loved her family, her church family and choir, music and singing. She enjoyed her Senior Center fellowship as well. She could always be counted on to make her homemade rolls for a Church or Community function.

  • 16. Grove Street United Methodist Church Kitty Lou Barr was a member of the UMW and Church Choir. She always had a smile and hugs for the students at the Vo- tech where she worked as administrative assistant. Family meal night as her house was the highlight of her week. She passed November 23, 2019.
  • 17. Grove Street United Methodist Church Katie Kesner was a member of the UMW and Hedrick Chapel Church. She enjoyed her walks and gardening. She retired from Joan Curtis Mfg. As a mother of ten, family was the center of her life. She passed December 29, 2019 at the age of 95.
  • 18. Grove Street United Methodist Church Maxine Bergdoll Ruby was a member of the UMW. She was an outstanding homemaker who enjoyed reading, cooking, and trying new recipes. She was very faithful in her attendance and support of Grove Street Church. She passed October 15, 2020 at the age of 84.
  • 19. CLARA “PEGGY” DAVIS JUNE 16, 2018 Peggy Davis served over 50 years as a United Methodist Woman. She started as Ladies Aid, then Women’s Society of Christian Service, and then renamed United Methodist Women. She was a very dedicated, loving, and committed Christian woman, who we all loved. She was a true sister in Christ. Peggy and her husband, John, were married for 61 years. They were blessed with two children, four grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.   • 33. St. John’s United Methodist Women Linda Lee Lawrence was born March 31, 1945. She was a dear wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was a bright and shining light in her community of Parsons, West Virginia and a faithful member of St. John’s United Methodist Women. Linda served as the “Sunshine Girl” for our unit and sent a carnation to shut-ins on their birthday. She had a way of spreading God’s love to everyone she met and spread sunshine everywhere she went. Linda went to be with her Savior, Jesus Christ, on August 5, 2020, where she waits for us at the gates of pearl.
  • 34. St. Paul’s (Patterson Creek) United Methodist Jacqueline (Jackie) (Bradfield) Miller was born on August 8, 1956 and died on June 26, 2019. Jackie was a United Methodist Woman for many years. She was a member of St. Paul’s (Patterson Creek) unit and held the office of secretary when she passed. Some time ago Jackie wrote a letter for the district newsletter about belonging to U. M. W. and what it meant to her and encouraged women to join as her mother (Annabel Bradfield) had encouraged her. Jackie fought a courageous battle with Multiple Sclerosis and Myelodysplasia Syndrome for many years. She attended meetings when she could and we usually met at local restaurants because she like to get out and enjoy herself. There were many times when she couldn’t attend and we ladies tool the meeting to her. Jackie was a fantastic lady and loved her Savior Jesus Christ. She is sadly missed.
  • 35. St. Paul’s (Patterson Creek) United Methodist Joan J. (Galluzzo) Seeders was born on June 11, 1936 and died on July 27, 2019. Although Catholic by faith Joan joined St. Paul’s (Patterson Creek) U.M.W. because she attended church there and lived in the community. Joan was in Dawn View Nursing Center when she passed. She has been a member for several years and at times we ladies took the meeting to her so she could participate. Joan was one of a kind and she is sadly missed.
  • 36. GLENNA MAY HARVEY SWEITZER 5-02-1923 - 04-04-2020 GLENNA, also known as Pete, Aunt Pete, and Granny, was our church mother. She was always smiling and encouraging, making everyone feel like they were her favorite. She had perfect attendance on the Sunday School charts each year. Someone in her family would bring her to church, as she never drove. At the Thanksgiving service, she always brought her “Thank offering” box. GLENNA loved puzzles, her picture books, and music. She would show her pictures and laughingly tell how she had a couch full of each generation. GLENNA had a musical family, playing strings. Her favorite hymn was “Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus”.   • 37. EILEEN MAXINE FITZWATER CUSTER 08-15-1933 – 12-10-2020 EILEEN received her engagement ring through the mail from the Panama Canal from her sweetheart of 63 years. She served her Lord and family as a homemaker, crocheting baby sweaters for family and friends and afghans to raffle for the Swanton Community Center. EILEEN helped make a “welcoming table” at the church. She enjoyed putting pickles and tomatoes in hoagie bags and slicing apples for apple dumplings.   • 38. DOROTHY FAYE FRIEND BECKMAN 03-31-1941 – 02-17-2021 Dotty was a good friend, never saying an unkind word. She always gave a smile and made a place for the in-laws at the family functions. Dotty loved her Lord, church, and family. She and her husband adopted two sons. She had one grandson and one great grandson, always showing photos. At church, Dotty took care of the baked table and made scalloped potatoes for the church funerals. She loved her flower garden and crocheting. Dotty made the church Christmas tree skirt and manger scene. A little girl wanted to take the Baby Jesus home. SWANTON UNITED METHODIST CHURCH
  • 39. Sarah Jane Albright died on September 5, 2020. Sarah Jane loved her home town of Westernport, MD, and was vitally involved in many aspects, such as Charter Member of the Westernport Heritage Society and two museums, Library Contributor, Town Beautification efforts, and of course, her church. She was a very active Methodist and participated in all areas possible, even the creation of needed programs. She helped organize the Tri-Towns after school program at Trinity United Methodist Church. She was one of the church women to create the bargain basement to help fund it. She was a 50 year member and officer of every church organization, especially all the women’s programs. We depended on Sarah Jane and will miss her inspiration and leadership. SARAH BROOKFIELD OCTOBER 25, 1951 – NOVEMBER 14, 2020 Sarah and her husband were in a car accident several months ago and only her husband survived, being in the hospital and nursing home since. Sarah always volunteered to help, especially with our soup and baked potato meals and Friday community lunches. She was very creative and occasionally made her own greeting and all-occasion cards. When asked, Sarah prepared inspirational programs for our meetings. She and her husband were both retired when they moved to Wardensville. They were both interested and involved in car racing.   • 41. Edith Bayne Morrison November 11, 1928 – May 24, 2019 Edith was a very pleasant lady that was always smiling. She attended our United Methodist Women’s meetings, as well as our worship services, on a regular basis. We always knew we could count on her to be there. She enjoyed attending the dinners that area charity groups held. She was always willing to help with out activities. Her only daughter was deceased, but she had two granddaughters tat she adored.   • 42. White United Methodist Church Charlotte Mousch was born on January 27, 1940 and died on December 17, 2018. Charlotte was a member of White United Methodist Church, where she had taught Sunday School and Bible School. She was President of United Methodist Women. She played a major role in Church Women United, as well as a volunteer for Community Action working in the Brown Bag Program. She was a 4-H Leader, helping to start Ryan Glade 4-H in 1950. She enjoyed reading and did the Reading Program every year for UMW. She enjoyed quilting and helped our local United Methodist Women’s group make several quilts, donated to House of Hope. She taught us about recycling and showed us by example. She never met a stranger, she gave her love freely to others, a sweet and lovely lady, a great smile and laugh, she had her own special charm and wit. She loved life and lived it to the fullest.
  • 43. Janet Mae Tichnell was born on May 16, 1925 and died August 23, 2020. Janet Mae would send cards and notes, saying, Jesus Loves You And I do too! Janet Mae was a member of White United Methodist Church. Over the years she probable held and served in every position in the church. She was a member of the United Methodist Women, holding offices in it as well, she was a Sunday School Teacher, served on the Administrative Board, Pastor Parish Relation Committee, and served on the charge committees for many years. Janet Mae served on the South Garrett Cooperative of the United Methodist Church. She was involved with their mission work. One time they raised enough money to get a well dug for a family in the community. Janet Mae was a seamstress and a quilter. She shared her love and compassion for people by making and quilting quilts for the House of Hope for persons and families in need. She made several quilts a year and donated them to the House of Hope. I am sure that you all have quilts from Mom and Grandma. I am sure she has prayed for all of us and we have asked her to pray for needs in each of our lives. Janet Mae was a woman full of wisdom. White United Methodist Church
