longtemps attendu « The Armenian
Genocide: Evidence from the German
Foreign Office Archives, 1915-1916 »

L’Inquisition
espagnole revisitée
Editorial écrit en anglais
par Edmond Y. Azadian
et publié dans The Armenian
Mirror-Spectator en date
du 21 février 2014
L’Espagne fait amende honorable
envers les Juifs sépharades expulsés il
y a plus de 500 ans, au plus fort de
l’Inquisition espagnole.

Gabriel Kochofa (à Moscou) a
Robert Avetisian fin janvier 2014.

• Hurriyet Daily News, Turquie :
Le but principal
corriger certains torts historiques.

BY EDMOND Y. AZADIAN
When nations face overwhelming,
burning issues, their citizens resort to
extraordinary measures, if they still
possess the instinct of survival. A case
in point may be Dr. Martin Luther King
Jr.’s march on Washington and his historic speech at the Lincoln Memorial,
on August 28, 1963.
The event was a watershed in the
Civil Rights movement in the US and
King’s messianic message still reverberates in the halls of power, long
after his untimely assassination.
Although he advocated change
through non-violence, he did not hesitate to state in his historic “I Have a
Dream” speech, “the whirlwinds of
revolt will continue to shake the foundation of our nation until the bright
day of justice emerges.”
His example was followed by other
African-American leaders, including
Louis Farrakhan, who organized the
Million Man March in 1995 in
Washington. Now, the question arises:
Do we have a dream? Can we mobilize
a million-person march on
Washington? In the case of the
Armenians, that “million,” of course,
can only be a symbolic number.
The compelling message of the
march must be the recognition of the
Genocide in a non-equivocal context
and that the destruction of an entire
nation cannot be dealt with simply
with a play of words in the political
marketplace. The centennial of the
Genocide is around the corner and
only an event commensurate with its
enormity could serve as an adequate
undertaking to mark the occasion.
Armenians cannot expect to stage
similar movements in Middle Eastern
countries; only Europe and North
America can tolerate and understand
such a massive political action without
repercussions, especially in light of
the delicate and frightening situation
in that part of the world at the
moment. Armenians in Europe, and
especially in France, are doing their
share and those actions are yielding
political dividends. The challenge is
for us, the Armenians living in the
United States.
Of course, we cannot be naïve to
the point where we expect the media
to give full coverage to us and that the
impact of the march will shake the
political world. Much has changed
from 1963, when King’s message resonated through the entire media. In
recent years, many powerful protests
at the nation’s capital have received
muted coverage in the media because
since the height of the Civil Rights
movement, the Rupert Murdochs of
the world have forged an alliance with
the military-industrial complex to cut
down to size any movement which is
not considered going along with the
day’s favored policies. Therefore,
media access has to be bought ahead
of the event to assure some political
impact.
Any such movement requires motivation, political will and above all,
finances. One may ask who will underwrite the cost of such an immense
undertaking, when as a community,
we have so many needs to build halfempty churches all over the country?
The answer is obvious: Forbes magazine just published the names of the 10
richest Armenians, who certainly will
not commit even a penny if they do
not see a united community mobilized
and ready to march in Washington.
In the past, the Armenians in the US
were polarized. Divisions were rife.
But when the opportunities arose, like
in 1946 to appeal to the United
Nations, there was community-wide
consensus. Today, people are less
polarized yet more fragmented.
Charismatic leadership drove each
segment of the community at the time
but today it is almost impossible to
single out leaders who would rise to
the occasion and move the masses to
action. That is the enemy within, the
one we should tackle, before we begin
criticizing the politicians.
It is tragically symbolic that the
Genocide museum project will certainly miss the centennial mark and there
is no discussion about it throughout
the community. Its dedication by 2015
could have served as a jumping-offpoint to a million-person march and
movement. A million-person political
march could be coupled with a statement about the survival of the
Armenians by organizing a gala affair
in New York, with the participation of
world-class artists and celebrities who
may attract the attention of nonArmenians. There are local efforts
regarding the centennial commemoration in the US, but plans have not been
announced nor finalized. It seems,
however, there is no one overarching
entity uniting Armenians across the
United States, much less globally.
One laudable action needs to be
mentioned, which may serve as a
spark of inspiration: world-class
pianist Vartan Mamikonian has
engaged himself, with a Crusader’s
zeal, to organize 100 musical events
around the globe, culminated with a
concert on April 24, 2015 in Yerevan.
In terms of scholarship, we have
made headway and all the courts and
political forums will be inundated with
full documentation of the Genocide to
defy anyone who wants to deny it happened.
The time is already at hand when
we have to start.
Do we have a dream for 2015 or is
this column merely reminding up that
it will remain a dream?
DEMOCRACY PREVAILED
IN THE MONTREAL ARMENIAN
COMMUNITY TURBULENCE
A nine-month old turmoil in the largest parish of the Canadian Armenian
Church Diocese is expected to subside following the annual parish assembly held in Montreal’s St. Gregory the Illuminator Cathedral.
The attendance of 185 members in good standing compared to participants to assemblies of previous years is considered a large turnout to the
meeting held on Sunday 23 February. Following blessings by the Locum
Tenens of the Canadian Armenian Church Diocese H.E. Abp. Nathan
Hovhannisian, the election of Mr. Jirayr Dolar as the Assembly Chairman
signaled that the dissident camp is in the minority.
Reports of the Parish pastor Rev. Vazken Boyadjian, the Parish Council
report as well as the financial, auditing and other auxiliary bodies’ reports
were discussed and approved. Complementary elections of Diocesan
Delegates and Parish Council members were then held adhering to strict
democratic regulations. Elected as Delegates were: Dr. Hrair Derkevorkian,
Mrs. Rachel Doghramadjian and Mr. Vahe Kerestedjian, as well as to serve
as members of the Parish Council were elected Mr. Antranig Shirinian, Mrs.
Rachel Doghramadjian, Mr. Davis Avedissian and Mr. Avedis Atamian.
These were elected by large margins of votes and predominantly represented candidates presented by the established institutions of the community.
The majority of the Parish thus expressed unreserved support to the leadership and executives that have offered their selfless services to maintain and
to promote a great variety of organizations of the community over several
decades.
A tense atmosphere of strife and dissent had prevailed in the community
since last May when former Primate Bp. Bagrat Galstanian lost a reelection
bid to a third term of office as Primate. A campaign of anonymous slander
and mudslinging that flooded the social media targeted leaders and organizations who have volunteered their services diligently for the betterment of
the Canadian Armenian community.
Armenian Bar Association sends letters
to Swiss ambassadors in U.S., Canada
The Armenian Bar Association has addressed letters to the Swiss
Ambassadors to the United States and Canada, respectively, calling for the
appeal of the European Court of Human Rights’ verdict on the denial of the
Armenian Genocide.
The ECHR struck down a Swiss law prohibiting the denial of the Armenian
Genocide after the trial of Turkish politician and Genocide-denier Dogu
Perinçek.
The Armenian Bar Association is the largest, most diverse group of ArmenianAmerican judges, lawyers, law professors and students united by the greatest and often elusive- universal interest, justice.
In the letter the Armenian Bar Association says, in part, “Under the guise of
protecting freedom of expression, the court tramples on universal values against
inciting hatred, and abuse of rights. The judgment also risks creating an unfortunate legal precedent for all abhorrent versions of denial and hate speech, thereby establishing a blueprint of immunity that would encourage future perpetrators of genocide. … The Armenian Bar Association thanks Switzerland for its
brave stand on Genocide recognition and denial prevention. We hereby request
that you convey our message to the Federal Council of Switzerland, so that it
may apply to the ECHR Grand Chamber, if it has not done so already”.

Armenian delegation satisfied with
participation in EuroNest
Parliamentary Assembly
An Armenian delegation that took
part in the meetings of standing committees of the EuroNest Parliamentary
Assembly is satisfied with its participation.
Delegation member Artsvik
Minasyan told reporters on Thursday
that he was satisfied with the results.
“I am happy to say that our delegation led by Artak Zakaryan made an
excellent joint speech,” Minasyan said.
The Armenian delegation members
– Hrant Bagratyan (Armenian National
Congress – ANC), Vahe Enfiajyan
(Prosperous Armenia Party – PAP)
and Artak Zakaryan (Republican Party
of Armenia – RPA) effectively demolished the Azerbaijani delegation’s
arguments.
Artak Zakaryan noted that the
Azerbaijani delegation’s style is wellknown and “even if quantum physics
had been on agenda, they would have
linked it to the Nagorno-Karabakh
conflict.”
THE YOUTH CORNER
That got me thinking
Think, then Tweet
You might know him as Sam Winchester from Supernatural, or Dean
Forester from Gilmore Girls. Jared Padalecki might be a great actor, he
might look like a Greek God, but Lord, he doesn’t think before he Tweets.
It all started with the ridiculous feud between him and the ‘’Beliebers’’.
After Padalecki commented about Justin Bieber’s cocaine use, the 19
year-old singer’s fans got so angry that Twitter flooded with their replies.
Padalecki, instead of just keeping his mouth shut to stop this nonsense,
continued to spread hateful Tweets about how badly Supernatural’s ratings
were going drop because the Beliebers were threatening to stop watching
the show: ‘’I’m SO sad to turn off the Beliebers.... However, at a maximum
justifiable age of 7, they should be in bed right now.’’ No matter how much
I love Jared’s work, I was pretty angry that he would write such sarcastic
and hateful messages. He started another fight that the world did not
need. Of course, he couldn’t help but add the following comment: ‘’Deport
@justinbieber and save us from the constant douchebiebery!!! #signthepetition’’. I am not here to defend Bieber. I’m not saying ‘’he’s young, he’s
allowed to make mistakes’’ . No. He acted illegally and is now paying for it.
Nothing excuses that. But the thing is, the kid has serious issues. But quite
honestly, who are we to judge him? That kind of pressure on an impressionable person has serious consequences.
I really have to mention this lovely gem of a Tweet: “Just saw the
mugshot of @justinbieber. I gotta admit, she’s kinda hot without all of her
usual makeup on...”, to which a Tumblr user replied the following: “Could
someone please tell Jared Padalecki that being there is nothing embarrassing or shameful about being a girl?”. Now, the ways in which misogyny infiltrates society never ceases to boggle me. People say things without even
realizing how demeaning it is towards women. However, the Tumblr user’s
comment was spot on, and I got even more mad at Jared Padalecki.
I think what shocked me the most about Jared’s Tweets was the total
lack of empathy. Though I understand that everyone is entitled to his or her
opinion, I find Jared’s opinion quite insensitive. A lot of fans are left wondering what has happened to their favourite pop star. As much as I’ll always
love my little Dean from Gilmore Girls, I am terribly disappointed in
Jared .

Ruben Vardanian - 45 years old; net capital: $50 million.
If the Armenian army is powerful
enough today to ensure the country’s
progress and upgrade its resources,
then we really have followers of
Zoravar Antranig, the minister of
defense said today at a ceremony
marking the great commander’s birthday, reports Tert.am.
“Being always close to the military
science by virtue of fate, the Armenian
nation has always had military commanders who managed – thanks to
their national dignity and international
reputation – to contribute to our struggle, as well as the developments
around the world. Andranik Ozanyan,
whose 150th birth anniversary we’ll
celebrate with a great splendor (next
year), is among those military commanders,” Seyran Ohanian told the
participants of the event.
He said it is the duty of each and
every person to follow such prominent
heroes’ example in the army-building
process and bring up generations with
their morals.
Ohanian said he thinks that it is
very important that a relic of the great
commander’s body is resting in the
Yerevan military pantheon, next to
other heroes.
Yerevan Mayor Daron Markarian,
high-ranking servicemen, freedom
fighters and many other people visited
Yerablur today to commemorate the
great hero.
