Blackadder
3. The four series of this sitcom focus on different eras
in the Blackadder family dynasty. In the first series
it's Edmund Blackadder we follow, a thoroughly
mean, rude, cunning, scheming, slimey prince who
has no morals. He is accompanied by a filthy
servant called Baldrick and Percy, a dim-witted
friend. The the later series see descendents of the
same characters in the Elizabethan, Regency and
the World War One eras of British History.
Synopsis
4. Blackadder is one of finest examples of brilliant
British sitcom. Razor sharp and extremely funny
scripts have been combined with outstanding
comic acting to produce a very superior sitcom.
It is perhaps therefore not surprising it has been
named the second best British sitcom ever. The
unique way the same memorable and likeable
characters are transported through time for
each new series adds to the fun. This is without
a doubt a must see comedy!
BSG Review
5. Blackadder
(played by Rowan Atkinson)
The four Blackadder characters are devious,
scheming men who thinks only of self-
improvement and self-preservation. Blackadder
seems unable to function without being
permanently sarcastic and rude ,never smiles
and seems to have the worst luck in the world.
He does however have a likeable roguish charm
and a very quick wit.
In the first series Blackadder is the son of a
rather loud king whilst in the second series he is
transformed into a Lord who spends most of his
day trying to avoid being beheaded by the mad
Queen. Series 3 sees Edmund demoted to a
servant who has to look after a rather dim Prince
Regent whereas in the final series he is a captain
in the army who tries every possible excuse to
avoid being sent into battle.
The Blackadder character is played brilliantly by
comedy star Rowan Atkinson, who manages to
ooze sarcasm and makes every put-down
hilarious. Thanks to Atkinson, Blackadder has
taken his place as one of British sitcom's best
characters.
6. Baldrick
(played by Tony Robinson)
One word can be used to describe
Baldrick, disgusting. Blackadder's
sidekick and general slave hasn't
had a wash ever by the looks of it.
Baldrick takes most of the blame
for his master's mistakes and also
manages to come up with the
worst ideas ever after uttering his
catch-phrase "Sir, I have a cunning
plan". You can't not like Baldrick
though thanks to his sheer
stupidity and terrible treatment.
7. Percy
(played by Tim McInnerny)
odd talking, slightly camp and very,
very dim Percy is Blackadder's other
sidekick in series one and two of this
sitcom. It can't be stressed enough
how stupid Percy and at the same
time how extremely funny he is (as in
the laughing at rather than with
sense). Percy is very loyal to
Blackadder, something he really
shouldn't be as Edmund uses and
abuses him constantly.
Tim McInnery's brilliant interpretation
and portrayal of the slow sidekick
makes Percy one of the British
Sitcom Guide's favourite characters
of all time.
