WORKING DRAWINGS: BESPOKE BALCONY SHELF
My client asked me to design a small shelf for her balcony. The requirements were that it
should only be big enough to hold a wine glass/whiskey tumbler or two and that it be dis-
creet to the point of being invisible to passers by below. it also had to be removeable.
My first design ‘Option 1’ was withdrawn on the basis it was unsafe for people below, as
noted by the joiners concerns:
“I have reservations about doing a job like this, as the reason the balcony rails have a cir-
cular or oval section, is to prevent people from putting things such as wine botttles etc. on
them, as this represents a significant hazard to people below”
On this basis, I redesigned the shelf ‘Option 2’ to incorporate a toughened clear glass back
that would prevent items falling. It is now in Situe.
