5. Nea Hili on the google map
About our location
Nea Hili is a suburb of Alexandroupoli and a summer resort. Its name originated from
the town “Sile” in the Black Sea where its residents come from. They settled down
here in 1922, after the destruction of Asia Minor, when Greek masses were forced to
abandon their homes, bringing their culture and civilization with them.
6. Our wider region on the google map
Alexandroupoli
Nea Hili is 4 km away from the center of Alexandroupoli, which is the first town of Greece
connecting Asia with Europe, since it is only 40 km away from the Greek-Turkish borders.
At first, it was just a fishing village but since 1880 it has become a contemporary town where
various nations have coexisted in harmony, preserving their traditions and transmitting them to
younger generations.

7. The Elementary School of Nea Hili is a nice, small school situated by the seaside of the so-
called village. 217 pupils coming from the village and the nearby area attend this school.
They are between 6 and 12 years of age.
Every year, our pupils take part in various types of activities such as environmental
projects, health education projects, sports competitions and celebration festivities inside
our school.
The main school building is on the
left and the gym on the right.
The old school building is also used,
located in the same schoolyard.
8. The building serving as the school gym, is also used for performing theatrical plays.
Therefore, we are obliged to use portable equipment to train every day, whereas on sunny
days we train in the schoolyard.

called “gaitanaki” and danced only in
the period of “Apokria” when
Christian people don’t eat meat.
Boys and girls dance around the
gaitanaki in one direction and knit
the strips. Then they “unknit” them
by dancing in the opposite
direction. There is also particular
music for this dance.
