4. School mascot is the panther,
colors are red and black. Here is
our mascot and our crest.
5. We are very fortunate to be well equiped with a number of PCs. I
would guess at least 130 in just the computer labs (90 in the high
school, 20 in the middle school, and 20 in the lower school), plus
another 130 for faculty and staff, who each have their own. Then
there are mobile computer carts, as well. Probably at least 300
total.
6. Our school’s mission is: Sewickley Academy inspires and educates students to engage
their hearts, minds, and hands to cultivate their full individual and collective potential in
the service of a greater good. Our four core values are character, educational vigor,
diversity, and community.
Sewickley Academy is a private, independent school. That means that students pay tuition
to attend and we are not affiliated with any specific faith or religion. We are a collegepreparatory school and 100% of our students go on to four year universities; academics
can be very competitive.
We have a highly diverse student body from 45 school districts in the states of
Pennsylvania, Ohio, and West Virginia. Approximately 22% of the student body is Asian
and East Indian, Latin, or African American.
We celebrated the school’s 175th anniversary last year. The Senior School (what we call
the high school) is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.
7. Col. Mike Finke is a graduate of Sewickley
Academy and holds the record for the
American astronaut who has spent the most
time in space (381.6 days).
9. This is what Western Pennsylvania looks like right now in the autumn.
10. Pittsburgh, PA has a population of 300,000. It’s a city of “Three Rivers”
because the Allegheny River (on the left) meets the Monongahela River
(on the right) to form the Ohio River at the Point. Usually a fountain is on
at the Point. The red car you see on the incline used to take steel workers
up and down the hill to work. Our area also has over 3,000 bridges!
11. This week, we have a giant duck in
the river that is making a tour around
the world. This is Ms. Cerniglia’s
daughter “kissing” the duck.
12. At the turn of the 20th Century, we were famous for
making steel and our football team is called “The
Steelers.” Today, we have lots of
universities, hospitals, and technology.
13. Our town: The “Village of Sewickley” is 17 miles north of Pittsburgh
and has a population of approximately 3,800.
