  1. 2. <ul><li>The Swann Report suggested that some ethnic groups enjoy better parental support than others for example a very high proportion 82% of ethnic minority parents went to parents evenings </li></ul>
  2. 3. <ul><li>Afro-Caribbean’s have a high level of lone-parenthood which creates increasing difficulties in supporting their children. However as Afro-Caribbean women tend to be left alone to become the main breadwinner, this positive role model could account for African-Caribbean girls doing better than Afro-Caribbean boys </li></ul>
  3. 4. <ul><li>Indian Asian and Chinese family life is built around large extended families which provide additional educational support and encouragement </li></ul><ul><li>Indian Asian and Chinese families place a high value on education which is evident in the high numbers of these groups going onto HE </li></ul><ul><li>Indian Asian and Chinese families encourage their children to appreciate the value of achievement. As we examined earlier, parental encouragement has a massive impact on a child’s attainment at school </li></ul>
