Introduction to badminton
1. Introduction to Badminton
1. History of the game
• In 1873, The Duke of Beaufort
held a lawn party in his country
place, Badminton. A game of
Poona was played on that day
and became popular among the
British society’s elite. The new
party sport became known as the
Badminton game.
2. The International Badminton
Federation (IBF)
Formed in 1934 with 9 forming
members.
England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Denmark, Holland, Canada, New
Zealand, and France.
3. Basic Rules
• The game starts with a
serve.
• The serve must be
below your waist
• The serve must be in
the serving area.
• Only the server can
score points.
4. Scoring
– The game is played to 15 in the men’s game
– The women’s game played to 11 in the women’s
game.
– Games can also be played to 21
5. The Doubles Game
• Teams can be either
same sex, or mixed
• Scoring is the same as
in singles.
• You must win 3 games
to win a match.
6. Speed of the Game
• Badminton is one of
the fastest games in
the world. In elite
competition, the
Shuttle can travel a
speeds in excess of
200 mph.
