What is Literature?
Definition of Literature:
• Literature is one of the admirable arts, like music, painting, and dance, as it is
meant to give pleasure. It consists of great books which, are notable for their
literary expression and form.
When we say that a book is not literature, we generally mean it has no aesthetic value;
while when we call a book on history, politics, religion, etc., literature, we mean that it
has got aesthetic value.
Types of Literature:
 POETRY : Poetry is a form of writing that uses language in a creative and expressive
way, often employing rhythm, rhyme, and imagery to convey feelings, ideas, or
experiences. It's like painting pictures with words, capturing emotions and thoughts
in a unique and artistic manner.
 Poetry is characterized by its use of rhythm, meter, and often, rhyme.
 It is highly condensed language, with an emphasis on evoking emotions and
imagery.
 Forms of poetry include sonnets, haikus, ballads, free verse, and epic poems.
FOR EXAMPLE : ‘THE ILLIAD’ , ‘ODE TO A NIGHTINGALE’ etc.
Prose:
• It is highly condensed language, with an emphasis on evoking
emotions and imagery.
Examples :[1] Pride and prejudice by JANE AUSTEN .
[2]Crime and Punishment by FYODOR DOSTOEVSKY.
• Poetry is characterized by its use of rhythm, meter, and often,
rhyme.
• Forms of poetry include sonnets, haikus, ballads, free verse, and
epic poems.
Fiction:
• Fictional literature consists of imaginative works that are created
from the author's imagination.
• It includes novels, short stories, novellas, and plays.
• Fictional works may portray invented characters, events, and
settings.
Examples :[1] A TALE OF TWO CITIES by CHARLES DICKENS .
[2] 1984 by GEORGE ORWELL .
Non-fiction:
• Non-fictional literature is based on real events, people, and
facts.
• It includes biographies, autobiographies, essays, journalistic
works, and historical accounts.
• Non-fiction aims to inform, persuade, or entertain readers with
factual information.
Examples :[1] THE SECOND SEX by SIMONE DE BEAUVOIR .
Drama:
• Drama is literature intended for performance, typically involving
dialogue between characters.
• It includes plays, scripts, and screenplays.
• Drama often explores complex themes, conflicts, and human
experiences through the interactions of characters.
Examples : THE TEMPEST by SHAKESPEARE.
HAMLET by SHAKESPEARE .
WAITING FOR GODOT by SAMUEL BACKET.
Fantasy:
• Fantasy literature involves elements of magic, mythology, or
supernatural phenomena.
• It often features imaginary worlds, mythical creatures, and epic
quests.
• Fantasy works may explore themes of heroism, good vs. evil, and
the power of imagination.
Examples : HARRY POTTER .
THE HOBBIT.
OTHER FORMS OF LITERATURE ARE ;
• FOLK TALES
• ROMANCE
• EPICS
• PLAYS
• MYTHOLOGY
• HORROR
