Eltroxin Tablets (Levothyroxine Sodium Tablets) are used
to treat hypothyroidism, a condition where the thyroid
gland does not produce enough thyroid hormone.
Levothyroxine is also used to help decrease the size of
enlarged thyroid glands and reduce the symptoms of low
thyroid hormone. It is also used occasionally to prevent the
recurrence of thyroid cancer. Levothyroxine, is a synthetic
form of the thyroid hormone thyroxine, which is normally
secreted by the follicular cells of the thyroid gland.

Uses of Eltroxin tablets:
Levothyroxine is used to treat hypothyroidism, a condition where the
thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormone. Levothyroxine
is also used to help decrease the size of enlarged thyroid glands (also
called a goiter) and to treat thyroid cancer.
It replaces or provides more thyroid hormone, which is normally
produced by the thyroid gland. Low thyroid hormone levels can occur
naturally or when the thyroid gland is injured by radiation/medications
or removed by surgery. Having enough thyroid hormone is important for
maintaining normal mental and physical activity.

Uses of Eltroxin tablets:
Eltroxin Tablets (Levothyroxine Sodium Tablets) is used in pediatric and
adult patients for:
Hypothyroidism: As replacement in primary (thyroidal), secondary
(pituitary), and tertiary (hypothalamic) congenital or acquired
hypothyroidism.
Pituitary Thyrotropin (Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone, TSH) suppression:
As an adjunct to surgery and radioiodine therapy in the management of
well-differentiated thyroid cancer.

Contraindications
➔
Eltroxin Tablets are contraindicated in patients with a known
hypersensitivity to Levothyroxine Sodium or any component of the tablet.
➔
Administration of Eltroxin is contraindicated in patients with untreated
subclinical thyrotoxicosis (suppressed serum TSH with normal L-
triiodothyronine/liothyronine [T 3] and L-thyroxine/levothyroxine [T4]
levels) or overt thyrotoxicosis of any etiology.
➔
Patients with acute myocardial infarction, acute myocarditis and acute
pancarditis.
➔
Patients with uncorrected adrenal insufficiency, as thyroid hormones
increase tissue demands for adrenocortical hormones and may thereby
precipitate acute adrenal crisis.

Warnings
Cardiac adverse reactions in the elderly and in patients with underlying
cardiovascular disease: Initiate Eltroxin (Levothyroxine Sodium Tablets)
at less than the full replacement dose because of the increased risk of
cardiac adverse reactions, including atrial fibrillation.
Myxedema coma: Do not use oral thyroid hormone drug products to treat
myxedema coma.
Acute adrenal crisis in patients with concomitant adrenal insufficiency:
Treat with replacement glucocorticoids prior to initiation of Eltroxin
tablets treatment.

Warnings
Prevention of hyperthyroidism or incomplete treatment of hypothyroidism:
Proper dose titration and careful monitoring is critical to prevent the
persistence of hypothyroidism or the development of hyperthyroidism.
Worsening of diabetic control: Therapy in patients with diabetes mellitus
may worsen glycemic control and result in increased antidiabetic agent or
insulin requirements. Carefully monitor glycemic control after starting,
changing, or discontinuing thyroid hormone therapy.
Decreased bone mineral density associated with thyroid hormone over-
replacement: Over-replacement can increase bone resorption and decrease
bone mineral density. Give the lowest effective dose.

Possible Side Effects
Side effects associated with Eltroxin therapy are primarily those of
hyperthyroidism due to therapeutic overdosage: arrhythmias, myocardial
infarction, dyspnea, muscle spasm, headache, nervousness, irritability,
insomnia, tremors, muscle weakness, increased appetite, weight loss,
diarrhea, heat intolerance, menstrual irregularities, and skin rash.

Overdosage
Symptoms: In addition to exaggeration of side effects the following
symptoms may be seen: agitation, confusion, irritability, hyperactivity,
headache, sweating, mydriasis, tachycardia, arrhythmias, tachypnoea,
pyrexia, increased bowel movements and convulsions.
The appearance of clinical hyper-thyroidism may be delayed for up to five
days.
Thyrotoxic crisis has been occasionally reported following massive or
chronic intoxication, leading to cardiac arrhythmias, heart failure and
coma.

Overdosage
Treatment: The goal of therapy is restoration of clinical and biochemical
euthyroid state by omitting or reducing the thyroxine dosage, and other
measures as needed depending on clinical status.
Treatment is symptomatic, and tachycardia has been controlled in adults
by 40mg doses of propranolol given every 6 hr and other symptoms by
diazepam and/or chlorpromazine as appropriate.

Eltroxin Tablets During Pregnancy
Levothyroxine Sodium (Eltroxin Tablets) has been classified by the US
FDA as Pregnancy Category A. Experience with Levothyroxine use in
pregnant women, including data from post-marketing studies, have not
reported increased rates of major birth defects or miscarriages.
There are risks to the mother and fetus associated with untreated
hypothyroidism in pregnancy.
Since TSH levels may increase during pregnancy, TSH should be monitored
and Eltroxin tablets dosage adjusted during pregnancy.
Therefore, the possibility of fetal harm appears remote. Eltroxin should not
be discontinued during pregnancy and hypothyroidism diagnosed during
pregnancy should be promptly treated.
