Forensic Odontology
Forensic Odontology
!! About Us !!
Some define forensic odontology as the intersection of the law and the science of dentistry.
Others simply state that it happens when dentists assist law enforcement in solving crimes. And
although a couple of thousand dentists throughout the world call themselves forensic
odontologist’s or forensic dentists by virtue of study, training, and experience – in truth, nearly
every dentist has the basic knowledge required to perform a dental identification – the staple of
forensic dental practice. Many dentists have assisted in making dental IDs by providing the
“dental records” that are so often referenced in the news – “the authorities are waiting for dental
records to positively identify the remains.”

Forensic Odontology
!! Advantages of Forensic Odontology !!
Forensic Odontology is the sub-discipline of dentistry that applies the principles of dental
science to matters of legal interest. The majority of a Forensic Odontologist's casework at the
JPAC CIL involves the identification of unknown individuals who died as a result of conflict.
Forensic Odontologists from the CIL have also been called upon to assist in recent mass fatality
cases, examine bite-mark evidence, assess injuries in child abuse cases, and to serve as expert
witnesses in civil litigation proceedings.

Forensic Odontology
!! Disadvantages of Forensic Odontology !!
A disadvantage of age estimates based on development is that most adults have completed their
dental development by 25. For individuals who have attained full dental maturity, dental
development is useless as an age estimator. Fortunately for the CIL, the majority of our
casework is of individuals who are between the ages of 18 and 25. Age estimates can be used as
useful corroborative circumstantial information in the identification process. They are also
helpful in segregating individuals from large cases with multiple, commingled decedents.

“logos” mean “study”, also termed as “Forensic Dentistry”. Therefore, in a very precise manner,
dentistry are often outlined as a science that deals with the study of human dentition. However
in broad terms, Forensic dentistry, additionally referred to as Forensic medical specialty, is that
the application of dental experience to system or for the aim of law or justice. The scope of
Forensic dentistry focuses on 3 main aspects that are: the identification of unknown remains by
teeth, jaw and craniofacial remains, analysis of oro-facial trauma connected with personal
