The document outlines a library skills class that reviewed how to use the library catalog and place holds. It then discussed the Dewey Decimal Classification system which divides nonfiction books into 10 main categories that are further subdivided with decimals. Students found their favorite Dewey sections and will email the teacher 3 books from those sections they want to check out. Homework includes exploring the library skills webpage and a question about Google Docs.
3. Melvil Dewey
The Dewey Decimal Classification System
(DDC) categorizes nonfiction books into ten
main divisions (see below). These classes are
then divided into ten subdivisions. The use of
decimals allows for additional categories. A
book is assigned a Dewey number based on its
subject. The Dewey number and the first three
letters of the author's last name become the
book's call number. Nonfiction books are
arranged numerically on the shelves according
to DDC:)
