In 1963, a resident in Derinkuyu, Turkey discovered a mysterious room behind a wall in his home that led to the discovery of an extensive underground city. Archaeologists have since uncovered 20 levels that could house up to 10,000 people and were used to shelter inhabitants from frequent invasions. The city had numerous passages, doors to block invaders, wells, ventilation shafts, stables, rooms, a church and other facilities to allow inhabitants to live underground.
