RIM provides a proprietary multi-tasking operating system for the
Blackberry, which makes heavy use of the device's specialized input
devices, particularly the thumbwheel.
The current OS 4 provides a subset of MIDP 2.0, and allows complete
wireless activation and synchronization with Microsoft Exchange's
and adds support for Novell GroupWise and Lotus Notes.
Third-party developers can write software using these APIs, and
proprietary BlackBerry APIs as well, but any application that makes
use of certain restricted functionality must be digitally signed so that
it can be associated to a developer account at RIM.

BES is a middleware software package that is a part of the
Blackberry wireless platform from RIM.
BES connects to messaging and collaboration software on enterprise
network’s to synchronize e-mail and PIM information between
desktop and mobile.
BES has a multitasking operating system which allows
synchronization with Microsoft Exchange’s e-mail, calendar,task
notes and contacts
Blackberry handheld’s integration into an organization’s e-mail
system is provided through a software package called BES.
14
BES can act as a sort of e-mail relay for corporate accounts so that
users always have access to their e-mail.
The software monitors the user's local "inbox", and when a new
message comes in, it picks up the message and passes it to RIM's
Network Operations Center (NOC).
The messages are then relayed to the user's wireless provider,
which in turn delivers them to the user's Blackberry device. This is
called Push procedure, where the mobile user doesn't have to
synchronize the data by hand.
15
All new e-mails, contacts and calendar entries are pushed to the
Blackberry device automatically.
Device storage also enables the mobile user to access all data offline
in areas without wireless service.
As soon as the user connects again, the BES sends the latest data. This
way the handheld is always up-to-date.
16
In addition, BES provides security, in the form of Triple DES or, more
recently, AES encryption of all data (both e-mail and MDS traffic) that
travels between the BlackBerry handheld and a BlackBerry Enterprise
Server.
The universal and push-based connectivity of the BES/MDS
infrastructure are among the most valuable aspects of Research In
Motion's product. An organization can have devices on different
carriers, and connected through different cellular network protocols, all
functioning in an integrated fashion.
17
Blackberry Mobile Data System (Blackberry MDS) is an optimized
application development framework for the Blackberry Enterprise Solution.
It can dramatically reduce the amount of time and resources required to
develop and deploy wireless applications for mobile workers.
Blackberry MDS allows organizations to deliver corporate data wirelessly,
leveraging the advanced security features used for Blackberry email.
BES also provides handhelds with TCP/IP connectivity that is proxied
through a component called "Mobile Data Service" (MDS). This allows for
custom application development using data streams on BlackBerry devices
based on the Sun Microsystems Java ME platform.
18
19
Blackberry Connect technology keeps mobile professionals
connected to colleagues, clients and information using proven
BlackBerry push technology on their choice of devices.
With BlackBerry Connect technology, users can connect to
Blackberry Internet Service and Blackberry Enterprise Server
on their preferred device.
Devices with BlackBerry Connect software extend current
BlackBerry wireless business strategy and boost productivity
and performance.
20
BlackBerry enabled devices let you choose the device that’s
right for you. Using BlackBerry push technology on your
preferred device, you’ll stay connected to the information you
need-no matter where business and life take you.
21
With the Blackberry Independent Software Vendor (ISV) Alliance
Program, you get all the resources, support and tools you need to develop
and sell innovative, market-driven applications for BlackBerry users.
This program is for you if your company develops, markets and sells
commercial software, including off-the-shelf wireless applications,
customized applications for specific business requirements and
advanced development tools for other BlackBerry developers. Members
in this program offer applications ranging from large-scale sales force
automation systems to games and ring tones.

END-TO-END WIRELESS ENCRYPTION
The BlackBerry Enterprise Solution offers two transport encryption
options, the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) and Triple Data
Encryption Standard (Triple DES)* encryption, for all data transmitted
between the BlackBerry Enterprise Server and the BlackBerry device.
Private encryption keys are generated in a secure, two-way
authenticated environment and are assigned to each BlackBerry
device user. Each secret key is stored only in the user's secure
Microsoft Exchange, IBM Lotus Domino or Novell GroupWise mailbox
and on their BlackBerry device, and can be regenerated by the user
wirelessly.
29
Data sent to the BlackBerry device is encrypted by the
BlackBerry Enterprise Server using the private key retrieved
from the user's mailbox. The encrypted information travels
securely across the network to the device where it is
decrypted with the key stored there.
Data remains encrypted in transit and is never decrypted
outside of the corporate firewall.
30
BlackBerry Enterprise Server Permits Only Trusted Connections
To further enhance the security of the solution, the BlackBerry
Enterprise Server is designed to allow only authenticated, outbound-
initiated connections through port 3101 of the firewall.
Unauthorized commands cannot be executed on the system because
no inbound traffic is permitted from sources other than the
BlackBerry device or the email server.
31
A BlackBerry is the
one-stop ,
no-compromise,
secure wireless solution
that allows you to stay connected with wireless access to email,
phone, web and organizer features.
