5S is an organizational methodology from Japan used to reduce waste of resources and utilization of space to increase operational efficiency we tried to implement it on street outside our college.

2.  5S is an organizational methodology from Japan used
to reduce waste of resources and utilization of space to
increase operational efficiency
 Five distinct phases are:
 Seiri (Sort) – Clearing and classifying
 Seiton (Set in order) – Straighten and simplify
 Seiso (Shine) – Clean and check
 Seiketsu (Standardize) – Stabilize, Conformity
 Shitsuke (Sustain) – Self discipline, custom and practice

3.  Introduction
In this challenge we have studied poor 5S practices for
street outside the college

4.  Vehicles are parked
randomly on road
sometimes on footpath
as well

5.  Tea stalls and vendors are
on the footpath

6.  Dustbins are not present
and garbage is littered on
the road

7.  There is no mechanism implemented to clean the road
daily and removing the slum area
 Improper drainage system leads to flooding during
monsoon
 No efforts are taken to improve the condition of the
road like providing proper parking space, disposal of
garbage. Improper road construction and speed
breakers are not present

8.  Sort
 Improper Parking – This problem is severe and results into traffic
jam on the road. Inconvenience is caused to students, faculties of
college and other people while driving and parking
 Stay on pavement – This causes inconvenience to pedestrians. This
is also a one of the reasons for increase in garbage on the road
 Set in order
 Tea stalls and vendors on footpath – People gather at the tea stalls
and near the vendors for buying. This causes inconvenience to car
drivers while driving on the road. People generally throw plastic tea
cups on the road and add on to garbage
 Shine
 Unavailability of dustbins – This causes unhygienic environmental
condition on the road. There are 2-3 colleges and food stalls on the
road. Proper disposal is not available which causes foul odour and
leads to inconvenience to people

9.  Road should be leveled properly with speed breakers
as there are many students crossing the road. Fast
moving cars may cause accidents
 Garbage bins should be kept per 150 meters and
specially near shops and college to avoid littering
 Strict action should be taken on people staying on
pavement
 Tea stalls should not be on foot path. It should be in
the commercial place
 Separate parking space should be provided for bikes
and cars

10.  5S implementation helps us to understand the root
cause of the problem in minimum time and helps in
resolving the same
 If the bad 5S practices are identified, area of concern
can be recognized and implementation of the good 5S
practices would make system more organized
 Advantages of implementation of good 5S for benefit
of an organization:
 Neat and clean system
 Ensures smooth functioning
 Increase in safety measures
 Low wastage
 Pleasant environment
