Nokia is a Finnish multinational communications corporation founded in 1865. It was a major manufacturer of mobile devices, producing a wide range of mobile phones running the Symbian operating system and later Windows Phone. Nokia has also produced televisions, games consoles and portable media players. Some key events in Nokia's history include establishing GSM networks in the 1980s, introducing the first ever GSM call in 1981, and releasing its first smartphone running Symbian OS in 1996. Nokia was once the largest manufacturer of mobile phones in the world but faced financial difficulties in the late 2000s and early 2010s as smartphones became more popular. It sold its mobile phone business to Microsoft in 2014.
