5. Alaska: Serious about Sustainability
• Only state to have sustainability
mandate in state constitution
• Pollock Fishery certified
sustainable by the Marine
Stewardship Council since 2005
(recertified in 2010)
• 30 year track record of sustainable
fishing practices by Alaskan
Fishermen & US gov.
Holistic approach to fishery management means entire Bering Sea
ecosystem is monitored and studied, including populations of rare
fish, endangered birds, and the endangered Steller Sea Lion
6. What does Really Mean?
• Independent Assessment of fishery to global standard
• Target Fish stocks are well-managed and healthy
• Full traceability throughout the value chain –
Consumer Reports estimates 20-25% of fresh & frozen
seafood sold in U.S. is mislabeled for species
BASED ON PAST
PERFORMANCE,
NOT FUTURE PROMISES
7. Sustainable Fishing is about what isn’t caught
• All of the raw data is a matter of public record: catch statistics, bycatch of non-
target species – not just for Pollock fishery, but for Pacific Cod, King Crab, Sole, etc.
• Compare to us Gulf Shrimp fishery, which had a bycatch of 320% in same period !!
• For instance, Salmon bycatch in 2010 was 47,591 fish exactly
