This refer to the general
process whereby rock
disintegrate and decompose
at our near earth’s surface
(situ)
 There are three main types of
weathering :
 Physical weathering
 Biological weathering
 Chemical weathering
 Sometimes called mechanical weathering,
physical weathering is the process that
breaks rocks apart without changing their
chemical composition.
 Freeze-thaw
 action:
 Temperature
 changes:
 Release of
 pressure within Rocks:
 Chemical weathering (also known as
decomposition or decay) is the
breakdown of rock (weathering) by
chemical mechanisms, the most
important ones being carbonation &
oxidation
 Oxidation:
 Carbonation:
 Biological weathering is the weakening
and subsequent disintegration of rock by
plants and animals. Growing plant roots
can exert stress or pressure on rock.
Although the process is physical, the
pressure is exerted by a biological
process (i.e., growing roots).
 Erosion refers to the removal of
the weathered materials from the
areas where weathering of rocks
had taken place .
 Flowing water:
 Winds:
 Sea waves:
 There are how many types of weathering?
 There are how many types of chemical
weathering?
 Freeze and thaw action comes in which type of
weathering?
 What is erosion?
 How many types of erosion?
