1. Analysing the Mise en scene
and camera angles based on 4
different thriller openings
2. For this task we had to analyse four different
thriller openings that we watched in our lesson
looking closely at Mise en scene and camera
angles. For Mise en scene we had to focus on
CLAMPS which stands for
costumes, lighting, actors, make up , props and
setting. Then we had to look at different camera
shots taken in each one.
3. Mise en scene
Costume - Normally dressed people walking down the street, reflects the time period of the film.
Lighting - Mainly dark lighting , no natural lighting, the street lights reflecting on him, makes him
important. Red flashes indicates danger.
Actors - Only see the faces of the actors, the main character looks nervous, his eyes look like they
are in shock or scared of something.
Make up - Normal
Props - Old car is used , reflects time of set.
Setting - It is set in a town at night, pouring down with rain, reflects the mood of the character
himself, creates a mysterious yet nervous tension.
Camera Angles
Close-ups - To show facial expression and emotion, camera focused primarily on the face.
Point of view - Camera shot through the eyes , spooky, tense, shows emotion also makes the
audience feel like its from their own perspective.
Wide angle shot - This is when they crossed the road, a group of people , shows off the scenery
and setting .
4. Mise en scene
Costume - Their clothing reflects the time period it was set in. Old hats and dirty looking clothes
indicates
that they are not wealthy, others in suits smoking cigars are wealthy.
Lighting - Lighting mainly in just black and white, however moments of colour creates confusion and
mysteriousness which is perhaps part of his characters personality.
Actors - Most of them still shots with them all staring at something or nothing, main character being
concentrated on most, he also is staring at something. Randomness.
Props - Most of them smoking cigars in their posh suits, represents wealth, others in old fashioned
clothes smoking cigarettes and gambling, indicates that they don’t have much to spend their small
amount of money on.
Setting - Fairly old time period, mainly because it is in black and white and the clothes worn by the
people.
Camera angles
Close ups - Focuses mainly on the face for facial expression and emotions.
Long shot - We see them in full body to see what they are wearing so we don’t have to visualize it.
5. Mise en scene
Costumes - All in suits, represents wealth, upper class, posh. All but one of them is in suits, the
other could perhaps be undercover.
Lighting - Natural lighting
Actors - Seem calm and cool, definitely a gang or a group of some sort because they walk together
its intimidating. At start they are all together handing out money, a deal has probably been done.
Props - They wear glasses which suggests that they could be a gang of hitmen, represents wealth
and style, upper class. Also cigars represents this. Nice car suggests wealth as well.
Setting - They go from a café out into the car park onto the street, natural setting.
Camera angles
Wide angle shot - Pictures of them all walking together over to the car, shows what they are all
wearing and shows them as a group.
Panning shot - They all walk together and the camera follows this shows of the scenery.
Close up - Shows emotion and expression, also shows what the characters look like.
6. Mise en scene
Costumes - No close ups on the face only hands which are stained with
blood, indicates danger.

danger could have and people could die, lighting goes dark on the important bits.

Props - He uses books , pencils and pens , he also has pictures of people , potentially
suspects.
