2. A LITTLE ABOUT US
I am committed to fostering a love of literature through
Guided Reading – children are directly taught how to
access literature.
Reading skills taught in small groups through trade
books
Integration of CCLS into our proven literacy programs
As part of our classroom routine,
children are expected to work
independently yet also given
individual
attention at their level.
3. TECH SUPPORT
Wi-Fi throughout entire school, with wired desktop teacher
station in each room
Students are given limited email accounts
Committed technology department with Technology Director,
Technology Integration Specialist, and Technicians
Classrooms wired with projectors, AirLiners and microphones
iPads connected to projection system through desktops
Repair/update requests handled through an automated Help
Desk
1:1 iPad deployment in classrooms 3-6
Teachers train other teachers in a mutual exchange of
skills/information
Desktop Computer Lab shared by K-6
2 Laptop carts shared by K-6
Concerted effort to use iPad platform for most uses
Goal is to be as paperless as possible
4. PHILOSOPHY
Students need to learn higher order thinking
skills, organization and self-discipline.
Classroom management is about teaching
children to organize, self-direct and prioritize.
Major goal is to teach children how to gather
and organize reference sources.
5. FOUNDATIONS
A few important general concepts to teach early:
*paraphrasing
*inferencing
*close reading
*general/specific
*literal / figurative
*intellectual property and citation of sources
These are keystones to a major research report required
of all Pine Valley third graders in the spring which is part
of a distance learning project with the Buffalo Zoo
6. HOW IPADS FIT
The iPad is a powerful tool for delivering:
*high interest skills practice
*the means to connect and communicate with
each other and the world
*guided practice
*individualized reference tools.
17. PROJECTS –
NOTABILITY
Students set up subjects in Notability for every
subject
Teacher emails or posts “anchor charts” in
MyBigCampus, Box, etc.
Students save these to the
appropriate subject
folder in Notability and
use it as a reference.

20. PROJECTS – THE ANIMAL
RESEARCH REPORT
In collaboration with the Buffalo Zoo:
*classes meet via Distance Learning with a Zoo
Keeper
*learn about animal behavior
*research their favorite Buffalo Zoo animal
*create a project to enrich the animal’s life at the
Zoo
*visit the Zoo to see the animal use the
enrichment
22. PROJECTS –
USING GOOGLE APP TO RESEARCH
Search results tab
Open in Safari
Share link via email
Copy URL
Navigate through results
Pull to the right to show history
Choose a display type
Voice search
24. PROJECTS –
KEEPER
Students are taught how to use Keeper to track
their passwords
I keep their Keeper passwords in case they lose
them
Yes, it’s a lot of upfront work to set up the
accounts
The payoff is that lessons can run much more
smoothly if students are able to keep track of
their own login information
25. PROJECTS –
OVERDRIVE
Download ebooks from online libraries
*cclslib.org – Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Library
System
*ebooks.nypl.org – New York Public Library –
can sign up online with NYS driver’s license
26. THANK YOU TO:
Those strong and steady men and women who
make the technology work for us.
Without you, we would be lost.
We especially appreciate that you don’t shake
your head at us when we know you really want
to…..
