Who is being represented and Why?
           Name : Cilia Elizabeth Carter

She is represented as a old and scary
maid, that is very threatening and
           angry upon being killed towards
           Laura.

She is represented this way because
she is very angry upon being killed
because of knowing a secret and we
want to show the audience how
dangerous ghost can become if you
           enter their territorial space
Who is being represented and Why?
           Name : Mary Elizabeth Carter

She is represented as a old and scary
maid, that is very threatening and
           angry upon being killed towards
           Laura.

want to show the audience how
dangerous ghost can become if you
           enter their territorial space
What type of social group are you representing
                  and why?

We are representing a less obvious social group
and established social group. She represent the
quiet and to themselves social group, where they
aren't too outgoing and have their own
unconventional interests – for example, ghosts.
We are representing this social group because we
feel it makes her a more sympathetic character
and helps the audience put themselves in her
shoes as she's more venerable making the film
 more real for them
How did you represent the character
Representation- We represent her as a venerable
          character.
Costume- by wearing no pattern designed clothes not
showing not to drag too much attention to herself
Setting- By placing her in a working class setting we
wanted her to seem more relatable from out target
          audience
Lighting- The lighting was dull to emphasise a spooky
          mood
Colour- We added a blue effect to make the setting
look cold – which will make the audience feel cold
Body langauge- The body language is tense and
awkward to show she is out of a comfort zone and
emphasising wary gestures and timid behaviour
Facial expression- Shock, straight faced, frightened
How did you represent the character
Representation- We represent her as being
old, scary and having a uncomfortable vibe

Costume- Plain black and white clothing to show
them as being maids as back in the days those
clothing made them seem less important to elite.

Setting- Placing her in the closet to show a
           uncomfortable atmosphere and attachment.

Lighting- Dark to make the place mysterious.

Colour- Black and white to represent death and a
           maid

           Body language- stiff – dead-like

Facial expression- Dead. By not making any interest
movements just making her body loose and quite
           still.

Positive or negative representation? Why?
It is both negative and positive.
The ghosts are represented negatively ad they are
threatening, dangerous, and uncomfortable.
However, Laura is represented positively as she's a
sweet young girl who is seemed to be venerable
and would be liked by the audience.

                         VS.
Is it a stereotypical convention? Why?
In some sense this is a stereotypical convention as
the ghost is usually stereotyped as the villain and
the main character as the victim.
However, the reasons of Laura getting involved with
these ghosts is that she feels sorry for them and
wants to set them free, whereas conventionally, it
would be to protect themselves, rather than
understand the ghost – which is why she goes
through the possession
How does the representation relate to the
              target audience?
The representation relates as she is the
going through the same stage of life as
our target audience (15-19) Also through
the fashion of Laura, the target audience
could relate to the style interesting them
to watch the film.

                                 Also the ghosts representation will
                                 excite our target audience as
                                 teenagers enjoy taking risks and
doing new things and therefore will
enjoy the thrill of being scared
Is it a fair or accurate representation? Why?

It is, because the ghosts
negative representation has
reasons behind the violent
behaviours as they are bitter
and angry of being murdered.

And again, it is, because we
                           haven't under or over
                           exaggerated our character
                           into something unrealistic
Why we represented this social group

We represented this ‘quiet underestimated’ social group
because we wanted our character to be unconventional
from the typical loud and exaggerated main character. We
wanted the use of effects and mise-en-scene to emphasise
the ‘scare’ rather than the character so it doesn't distract
the audience from their own reaction
Questions Three

What kind of media institution might
 distribute your media product and
                why?
Film distributing companies that we have
                   explored
                 Universal
• Universal set up its own distributing company
in France in the late 1960s. It is based in
America, however they have filmed in British
locations and have had British actors feature
  in the film
Film distributing companies that we have
                   explored
                Paramount
They are quite a long established distributing
company. Paramount Pictures was founded in
1912 and is now owned by Viacom, a media
  conglomerate.
Film distributing companies that we have
                    explored
                 Lionsgate
• Lionsgate is a North American entertainment
company. The company was formed in
Vancouver in 1997, and is headquartered in
California. Lionsgate is quite new in
  comparison to other distributing companies.
Momentum Pictures
They are a fairly new distribution company and
are owned by Paramount Pictures. They have
distributed a variety of films targeted at many
  types of target audiences
Film distributing companies that we have
                   explored

       Revolver Entertainment
Revolver Entertainment were founded in
1997, so they are relatively new compared to
  other distribution companies. They have
operations in both London and Los Angeles, so
a variety of influence will be obtained
What types of films do they release?
   • After our research, analysis and comparison of the
distribution companies; we eventually chose Momentum
                  Pictures to distribute our film.
• Momentum Pictures have distributed many thriller films similar
to our opening sequence. Another similar feature is that they
distribute ghost films and they also distribute films in British
                              locations.
What types of target audiences do they
                 have?

They have mainly young target audiences as
their films are centred around young characters.
This is similar to our film as our opening
sequence is aimed at young people.
What types of budgets do they usually
              work with?
• They work with very flexible budgets of
around $1.5 to 53 million meaning they can
distribute a whole has a high budget so would
be able to distribute our film effectively.

OUR FILM BUDGET: £9, 000, 000
Construction of film: how much is it to
               make it?
There many construction costs. Our costume and
make up will cost a lot as that was one of our
main features that we focused on. Every
character had costume adapted to their
representation. Also the props such as
candles, book and fake blood. The special effects
is also something essential we use throughout
the opening sequence and that will be very
                       costly.

OUR CONSTRUCTION BUDGET: £5, 000, 000
How much is it to advertise and market
                         it?
We would want to have posters all around Britain and
Ireland and adverts on the television channel Film 4
which is going to be costly. We would also like to have our
film on Google adverts. We are going to be relying mainly
on below the line advertising such as reviews and ‘word
of mouth’. Another advertising feature we want to use is
inserting our trailer before thriller films. By doing all this
we would be able to reach our target audience which is
young people. We believe that Momentum Pictures will
allow us to achieve all this.

OUR ADVERTISING AND MARKETING COST: £3, 000, 000
How would you release your film?
We would release our film on cinema as we have the
right budget and distributing company to distribute our
films to many cinemas. We distributed some
questionnaires to our target audience and discovered
that a vast majority of them go to the cinema to watch
thriller films and enjoy doing so.

Do you go to the cinema often to watch thriller films?
      Yes  
      No
      Sometimes 

Evaluation part 2

  • 1. Who is being represented and Why? Name : Cilia Elizabeth Carter She is represented as a old and scary maid, that is very threatening and angry upon being killed towards Laura. She is represented this way because she is very angry upon being killed because of knowing a secret and we want to show the audience how dangerous ghost can become if you enter their territorial space
  • 2. Who is being represented and Why? Name : Mary Elizabeth Carter She is represented as a old and scary maid, that is very threatening and angry upon being killed towards Laura. She is represented this way because she is very angry upon being killed because of knowing a secret and we want to show the audience how dangerous ghost can become if you enter their territorial space
  • 3. What type of social group are you representing and why? We are representing a less obvious social group and established social group. She represent the quiet and to themselves social group, where they aren't too outgoing and have their own unconventional interests – for example, ghosts. We are representing this social group because we feel it makes her a more sympathetic character and helps the audience put themselves in her shoes as she's more venerable making the film more real for them
  • 4. How did you represent the character Representation- We represent her as a venerable character. Costume- by wearing no pattern designed clothes not showing not to drag too much attention to herself Setting- By placing her in a working class setting we wanted her to seem more relatable from out target audience Lighting- The lighting was dull to emphasise a spooky mood Colour- We added a blue effect to make the setting look cold – which will make the audience feel cold Body langauge- The body language is tense and awkward to show she is out of a comfort zone and emphasising wary gestures and timid behaviour Facial expression- Shock, straight faced, frightened
  • 5. How did you represent the character Representation- We represent her as being old, scary and having a uncomfortable vibe Costume- Plain black and white clothing to show them as being maids as back in the days those clothing made them seem less important to elite. Setting- Placing her in the closet to show a uncomfortable atmosphere and attachment. Lighting- Dark to make the place mysterious. Colour- Black and white to represent death and a maid Body language- stiff – dead-like Facial expression- Dead. By not making any interest movements just making her body loose and quite still.
  • 6. • 7. Positive or negative representation? Why? It is both negative and positive. The ghosts are represented negatively ad they are threatening, dangerous, and uncomfortable. However, Laura is represented positively as she's a sweet young girl who is seemed to be venerable and would be liked by the audience. VS.
  • 8. Is it a stereotypical convention? Why? In some sense this is a stereotypical convention as the ghost is usually stereotyped as the villain and the main character as the victim. However, the reasons of Laura getting involved with these ghosts is that she feels sorry for them and wants to set them free, whereas conventionally, it would be to protect themselves, rather than understand the ghost – which is why she goes through the possession
  • 9. How does the representation relate to the target audience? The representation relates as she is the going through the same stage of life as our target audience (15-19) Also through the fashion of Laura, the target audience could relate to the style interesting them to watch the film. Also the ghosts representation will excite our target audience as teenagers enjoy taking risks and doing new things and therefore will enjoy the thrill of being scared
  • 10. Is it a fair or accurate representation? Why? It is, because the ghosts negative representation has reasons behind the violent behaviours as they are bitter and angry of being murdered. And again, it is, because we haven't under or over exaggerated our character into something unrealistic
  • 11. Why we represented this social group We represented this ‘quiet underestimated’ social group because we wanted our character to be unconventional from the typical loud and exaggerated main character. We wanted the use of effects and mise-en-scene to emphasise the ‘scare’ rather than the character so it doesn't distract the audience from their own reaction
  • 12. Questions Three What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
  • 13. Film distributing companies that we have explored Universal • Universal set up its own distributing company in France in the late 1960s. It is based in America, however they have filmed in British locations and have had British actors feature in the film
  • 14. Film distributing companies that we have explored Paramount They are quite a long established distributing company. Paramount Pictures was founded in 1912 and is now owned by Viacom, a media conglomerate.
  • 15. Film distributing companies that we have explored Lionsgate • Lionsgate is a North American entertainment company. The company was formed in Vancouver in 1997, and is headquartered in California. Lionsgate is quite new in comparison to other distributing companies.
  • 16. Momentum Pictures They are a fairly new distribution company and are owned by Paramount Pictures. They have distributed a variety of films targeted at many types of target audiences
  • 17. Film distributing companies that we have explored Revolver Entertainment Revolver Entertainment were founded in 1997, so they are relatively new compared to other distribution companies. They have operations in both London and Los Angeles, so a variety of influence will be obtained
  • 18. What types of films do they release? • After our research, analysis and comparison of the distribution companies; we eventually chose Momentum Pictures to distribute our film. • Momentum Pictures have distributed many thriller films similar to our opening sequence. Another similar feature is that they distribute ghost films and they also distribute films in British locations.
  • 19. What types of target audiences do they have? They have mainly young target audiences as their films are centred around young characters. This is similar to our film as our opening sequence is aimed at young people.
  • 20. What types of budgets do they usually work with? • They work with very flexible budgets of around $1.5 to 53 million meaning they can distribute a whole has a high budget so would be able to distribute our film effectively. OUR FILM BUDGET: £9, 000, 000
  • 21. Construction of film: how much is it to make it? There many construction costs. Our costume and make up will cost a lot as that was one of our main features that we focused on. Every character had costume adapted to their representation. Also the props such as candles, book and fake blood. The special effects is also something essential we use throughout the opening sequence and that will be very costly. OUR CONSTRUCTION BUDGET: £5, 000, 000
  • 22. How much is it to advertise and market it? We would want to have posters all around Britain and Ireland and adverts on the television channel Film 4 which is going to be costly. We would also like to have our film on Google adverts. We are going to be relying mainly on below the line advertising such as reviews and ‘word of mouth’. Another advertising feature we want to use is inserting our trailer before thriller films. By doing all this we would be able to reach our target audience which is young people. We believe that Momentum Pictures will allow us to achieve all this. OUR ADVERTISING AND MARKETING COST: £3, 000, 000
  • 23. How would you release your film? We would release our film on cinema as we have the right budget and distributing company to distribute our films to many cinemas. We distributed some questionnaires to our target audience and discovered that a vast majority of them go to the cinema to watch thriller films and enjoy doing so. Do you go to the cinema often to watch thriller films? Yes   No Sometimes 
