What is EDI ?
● Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) is the
– computer to computer exchange of business documents such
as
● Purchase order
● Invoices
– in a standard electronic format
– between multiple business entities
● An EDI standard provides a common data format which enables
machine to machine communication over an available network.

Example: EDI 940
● EDI 940 Warehouse shipping Order
● Used by seller to instruct the warehouse on what to ship, how
much and when. Specific information provided in this transaction
set may include:
– Manufacturer information
– Delivery date
– Item descriptions and quantities
– Ship-to information (location name and address, contact, etc.)
– Bill-to information
– Shipment method information

example: what is the benefit of EDI 940 ?
● Integrates with existing business system
– The 940 Warehouse Shipping Order data can be generated
from Sales Order or Purchase Order information.
● Series of messages that can be exchanges between two
transacting business parties
– 997 ack submitted by warehouse ↔ in response to edi 940
– 945 shipment advice trans by warehouse ↔ once order is
shipped
– 945 contains shipment details
● Used by seller to generate
– 856 advance ship notice
– 810 invoice to customer
