Mandy asks…

Should I do HCG trigger injection with IUI?
We are doing Clomid+IUI for the first time this cycle. I failed 6 cycles of Clomid alone. The
doctor has said that we can either do timed IUI or HCG trigger injection and IUI. He’s leaving it
up to me, but I don’t know which would be better.

I’m concerned because my LH surges are really short on Clomid (I have yet to detect them with
OPKs) and I’m afraid that we would miss our timing. Are there any downsides to doing the
trigger injections?

Any info would help! Thanks!

Pregnancy Advisor’s answers:

I would recommend the HCG trigger shot. I was told that it results in 99% chance of ovulation
within 24 – 48 hours. So you should for sure do it!
Your doctor will tell you what time to take the shot and then what time to come in for the IUI. It
has to be timed exactly.
The HCG trigger doesnt cost much and doesnt hurt a bit. However you can have some
pregnancy type side effects like stomach ache, cramps. Headache, etc because HCG is the
pregnancy hormone. Yeah i would for sure take the shot! Good luck!

                                                                                              1/7
Sandy asks…

Has anyone heard of doing an IUI 14 hours after HCG shot?
Hello,

I am sure I am stressing for no reason, but I am beginning to panic over the timing of my IUI.
On CD13, an ultrasound indicated that I had 5-6 eggs, with three leading at 21mm in size.
When my doctors office called me to inform me of the results, they said to take an OPK that
evening, and if negative to give myself the HCG trigger shot. I never got my LH surge, so I
gave myself the HCG shot at 7:45PM on CD 13. Well, they scheduled my IUI for 10:00 AM on
CD 14 (the next day!). That is only 14 hours after the HCG trigger…has anyone ever heard of
this? I have always heard 36 hours after the shot.

Thanks for the answers.

Pregnancy Advisor’s answers:

I have had 5 IUIs and all were done 36 hours after the HCG shot.

I was told that washed sperm don’t live nearly as long, so its important not to do the IUI too
early. I can’t remember exaclty how long they live though 12 hours is coming to mind. Do a
search on “washed sperm survival” or something similar.

I would definitely ask the doctor about the timing. Did he have a golf day planned for 36 hours

                                                                                             2/7
after your IUI? Seriously, ask why the IUI was done so soon.

Hopefully they know what they’re doing and good luck!

Susan asks…

2nd round of 100mg clomid with first time IUI?
I recieved and IUI treatment on April 27th as this is the day I detected my LH surge. I also took
Clomid 100mg days 3-7 of my cycle which is generally anywhere from 28-29 days. I am
wondering if anyone has experienced pregnancy symptoms right after the IUI treatment as I am
feeling pinching and mild period like cramps today and it would be 4 days since the IUI
treatment. Could these cramps just be the clomid or could I infact be pregnant. I also have been
having mild creamy discharge…please let me know if you have experienced this and gotten
pregnant or any advice. I know I need to wait 14 days after ovulation to do a prego test but just
would like some insight. Thank you in advance and baby dust to all whom are trying Neha

Pregnancy Advisor’s answers:

Don’t get ur hopes up… With all the hormones etc. And being anxious, you might mistake
EVERYTHING for pregnancy symptoms. I made the same mistake. Go check out
www.twoweekwait.com. We’ve just had the 3rd round on 100mg Clomid and have got another
week to go before we know… Good luck

                                                                                           3/7
Jenny asks…

Has anyone on here had iui with a natural cycle (no fertility
drugs?)?
I had iui once with clomid and it worked on the first try. We are thinking of doing it again but I
am older now (32) and I will not be on clomid. It will be a natural cycle. I will be using the
ovulation predictor test strips and will have iui 24 hours after lh surge. Has anyone done this
and had it work on the first try? I am a little nervous that it wont work without the clomid. We are
also going to be adopting a child in the next year or so. So I wan’t to have my last biological
child now. We have had a plan for a while on how many kids we want and we are going to
adopt 1. The only thing different is that we have decided to adopt a disabled child or an older
child. We have done foster care twice so aproval will be easy but we want one more child. And I
have been reading online that it takes some people 8-10 tries. I just assumed that since it
worked for me the first time it would happen like that again. Has anyone else had it work on the
first try? Also his sperm count is over 20 million.

Pregnancy Advisor’s answers:

With no fertility meds (naturally), IUI has the same odds as just doing it naturally. The difference
is not as significant (odds of conceiving may go up 5% to 20%-25%). Just make sure to
continue TTC even after IUI.

Good luck.

                                                                                              4/7
Donna asks…

How long does it take for HCG to show up in your urine after a
booster?
This is actually out of curiosity:
I had my HCG trigger shot at 10:30 and I took an OPK at 13:00. I didn’t go to the bathroom in
between.
Did I pick up my natural LH surge or did the HCG already make its way into my urine?
Also, what would be the perfect time for my IUI tomorrow? am or pm?

Pregnancy Advisor’s answers:

Hi;

I suggest that you do the IUI tomorrow in the AM, always better!!

I would also say that the HGC made it to your urine faster!! SO that is my thougts!!

Good Luck!!

                                                                                          5/7
Linda asks…

Ovulation Question?
So, now that AF has arrived AGAIN, I have a question. I understand that the chances of an egg
being fertilized and implanting are only about 25% on any given cycle. According to my charts, I
do everything right, but am just part of that 75% each time.
My fertility friend charts indicate I ovulated the day I got my positive LH surge. I tested several
days before and got negatives, but got my positive on the same day as ovulation supposedly
occurred. We are doing IUI with donor sperm, so my chances are most likely decreased each
month because I don’t have the opportunity to BD every fertile day…. (well, we can BD, it just
probably won’t do any good! LOL)
I went in for IUI the day after I got my LH surge, which means, according to my chart, I did the
IUI the day after I ovulated. My charts are all the same, ovulation occurring on the day of
positive LH surge.
So should I plan on doing IUI the day BEFORE I get my LH surge next time? How does one
time that? Just go by CM alone?

Pregnancy Advisor’s answers:

I think you should do your IUI the day you get your LH surge. Sometimes you only have around
12 hours of advanced notice… Maybe you got the positive early during the day? If that is the way
it happened you probably did ovulate that day or late night or even early the next morning (and
you may have been asleep?). I think the best way to go is relying on your opk results and get
the IUI done that same day.

                                                                                             6/7
