7. This country, so immense and full of life, this diaphragm
of Africa, struck by violence like a blow to the stomach,
8. For it is from hearts that peace and development are born, because, with God’s help,
men and women are capable of justice and of forgiveness, of concord and reconciliation,
of commitment and perseverance in putting to good use the many talents they have received.
9. take once more into your hands, like a pure diamond, all that you are, your dignity
and your calling to preserve in harmony and peace this home in which you dwell
10. this country and this continent deserve to be respected and
listened to; they deserve to find space and receive attention.
11. the problem is not human nature or the nature of ethnic and social groups,
but the way in which they choose to live together: their willingness or
not to encounter one another, to be reconciled and to start anew
12. I express immense gratitude to the countries and the organizations that are
providing substantial aid in this regard, helping to combat poverty and
disease, supporting the rule of law and promoting respect for human rights
13.
14. the heavenly Father wants us to accept one another as
brothers and sisters of a single family and to work for a
future together with others, and not against others
15. Those holding civil and governmental offices are called
to operate with crystalline clarity, experiencing the
charge they have received as a means of serving society
16. “If there is no respect for justice, what are states if
not a great confederacy of thieves?” (De civ. Dei, IV, 4).
God is always on the side of those who
hunger and thirst for justice (cf. Mt 5:6).
17. The most precious diamonds of these lands are the sons and
daughters of this nation; they need to have access to an education
that enables them to make their innate talents shine brightly
18. the greatest need is for healthcare and social models that do not simply
respond to pressing needs of the moment, but help improve the life of
society: through sound structures and honest and competent personnel,
19. HOLY MASS - “Ndolo” Airport (Kinshasa)
Wednesday, 1st February 2023
20. The peace of Jesus, which is also given to us in every Mass, is an Easter peace: it comes
from the resurrection, because the Lord first had to defeat our enemies, sin and death, and
reconcile the world to the Father. He had to experience our solitude and abandonment,
our hell, embracing and removing the distance that separates us from life and hope
21. Brothers and sisters, with Jesus, evil never wins,
evil never has the last word. “For he is our peace”
(Eph 2:14), and his peace is always triumphant
22. forgiveness, community and mission
faced with the sadness and shame of those who had denied him
and fled, he shows his wounds and opens up the wellspring of mercy.
He does not multiply words, but opens wide his wounded heart,
in order to tell us that he is always wounded with love for us
23. He sees the wounds you carry within, and he desires to console and
heal you; he offers you his wounded heart. To your heart, God repeats
the words he spoke today through the prophet Isaiah: “I will heal
them; I will lead them and repay them with comfort” (Is 57:18)
24. He wants to anoint us with his forgiveness, to give us peace and the
courage to forgive others in turn, the courage to grant others a great
amnesty of the heart. What great good it does us to cleanse our hearts
of anger and remorse, of every trace of resentment and hostility!
25. What a beautiful thing it is to open the doors of your heart
and your home to his peace! And why not write those words
of his on your walls, - wear them on your clothing, and put
them as a sign on your houses: Peace be with you!
26. There is no Christianity without community,
just as there is no peace without fraternity
27. Thanks to the Holy Spirit, they will no longer look
at what divides them, but at what unites them
28. How can we resist the lure of power and money and not give in to divisiveness,
to the temptations of careerism that corrode the community, and to the false
illusions of pleasure and witchcraft that make us become selfish and self-centred?
29. He sent him
to serve and to
give his life for
humanity
(cf. Mk 10:45),
to show his mercy
to each person
(cf. Lk 15)
and to seek out
those who are
far away
(cf. Mt 9:13).
30. We need to find room in
our hearts for everyone;
to believe that ethnic,
regional, social, religious
and cultural differences
are secondary and not
obstacles; that others are
our brothers and sisters,
members of the same
human community; and
that the peace brought
into the world by Jesus
is meant for everyone
31. Christians, sent by Christ, are called by definition to be a conscience
of peace in our world. Not merely critical consciences, but primarily
witnesses of love. Not concerned with their own rights, but with
those of the Gospel, which are fraternity, love and forgiveness
32. MEETING WITH VICTIMS
FROM THE EASTERN PART OF THE COUNTRY
Apostolic Nunciature (Kinshasa)
Wednesday, 1st February 2023
33. I humbly bow my head and, with pain in my heart, ask him to forgive the violence of man against
man. Father, have mercy on us! Console the victims and those who suffer. May he convert the
hearts of those who carry out brutal atrocities, which bring shame upon all humanity! And may
he open the eyes of those who refuse to see these abominations or walk away from them.
34. conflicts that have to do with land ownership, with the absence or weakness of institutions,
and with animosity and hatred marked by the blasphemy of violence in the name of a
false god. Yet it is, above all, a war unleashed by an insatiable greed for raw materials
and money that fuels a weaponized economy and requires instability and corruption
35. Listen to the cry of their blood (cf. Gen 4:10), open your ears to the voice of God, who calls you
to conversion, and to the voice of your conscience: put away your weapons, put an end to war
36. The use of hatred and violence is a tragic lie; hatred
and violence are never acceptable, never justifiable,
never tolerable, all the more so for Christians
37. In the name of Jesus, who forgave those who pierced
his hands and feet with nails, hanging him upon a
cross, I ask everyone: please disarm your heart
38. remove all venom, reject hatred, defuse greed, erase bitterness. Saying
“no” to all these things may seem like weakness, yet in fact it sets us free,
for it gives us peace. Yes, peace is born of hearts set free from resentment
39. Don’t give in to resignation. Peace calls us to combat the
discouragement, despondency and distrust that lead us to think
that we are better off distrusting others, living apart and far
away, rather than offering a helping hand and walking together
40. A new future will come about if
we see others, whether Tutsi or
Hutu, no longer as adversaries or
enemies, but as brothers and
sisters…. - all your neighbours,
then, are your sisters and
brothers, whether they be
Burundian, Ugandan or Rwandan
41. Yes to reconciliation - commit yourselves to
forgiving one another and to rejecting war and
conflict as a means of resolving differences
42. Christian prophecy means responding to evil with good,
to hatred with love, to division with reconciliation. Faith brings with it a new concept of
justice, which is not content to punish and rejects revenge, wishing instead to bring
reconciliation, to defuse new conflicts, to eliminate resentment and to offer forgiveness
44. only forgiveness can open the door to the future,
for it opens the door to a new justice that, without ever
forgetting, puts an end to the vicious cycle of revenge
45. Yes to hope - With Jesus, every tomb can become
a cradle, every Calvary an Easter garden
46. I bless, all the sowers of peace who work in this country: the individuals and
institutions that are generous in providing aid and in responding to the
victims of violence, exploitation and natural disasters, the men and women
who come here motivated by a desire to advance people’s dignity
47. And I pray that
women, every woman,
maybe respected,
protected and
esteemed. Violence
against women and
mothers is violence
against God himself,
who from a woman,
from a mother, took
on our human
condition
