Private meeting with
the Grand Imam of Al-
Azhar in the Papal
Residence within the
grounds of Sakhir
Royal Palace
Meeting with the Members of the Muslim Council
of Elders at the Mosque of Sakhir Royal Palace
“you, who see in extremism a danger that corrodes genuine religion;
upon you, who are committed to dispelling erroneous interpretations that
through violence misconstrue, exploit and do a disservice to religious belief”
“God is the source of peace. May he enable us to be channels
of his peace everywhere! - the God of peace never brings
about war, never incites hatred, never supports violence”
Peace “‘is the effect of righteousness’ (Gaudium et Spes, 78).
Peace is born of fraternity; it grows through the struggle
against injustice and inequality; it is built
by holding out a hand to others”
in the spirit of Francis of Assisi, who liked to
say: “As you announce peace with your mouth,
make sure that greater peace is in your hearts”
Let us be guided
by the saying
of Imam Ali:
“People are
of two types:
they are either
brothers and
sisters in religion
or fellow men
and women in
humanity”,
“Human beings,
however, turned their
back on the Creator
and the order he
established, and that
was the beginning of
the problems and
imbalances that,
according to the
biblical account,
followed in quick
succession”.
Quarrels and murder between brothers (cf. Gen 4);
Environmental upheavals and disasters (cf. Gen 6-9),
Pride and social conflict (cf. Gen 11)...
“In a word, a flood of evil and death burst forth from the
human heart, from the malign spark unleashed by the evil
that crouches at the door of our hearts” (cf. Gen 4:7),
“help humanity to rediscover the forgotten sources of life, to lead
men and women to drink from the wellsprings of ancient wisdom,
and to bring the faithful closer to worship of the God of heaven and
closer to our brothers and sisters for whom he created the earth”
Prayer and Fraternity
- We who are descended from
Abraham, the father of peoples
in faith, cannot be concerned
merely with those who are “our
own” but, as we grow more and
more united, we must speak to
the entire human community
Ecumenical meeting and Prayer for
Peace in Our Lady of Arabia Cathedral
“from many peoples and languages, from many places
and different rites, we have all assembled here because
of the mighty works accomplished by God! – May we
live in peace, like on that Pentecost morning”
“the Holy Spirit, who joins all the members
together, is greater than our divisions”
Unity in diversity – “What is the “gathering place,”
the “spiritual cenacle” of our communion? It is the
praise of God, which the Spirit stirs up in everyone”
“Prayer of praise allows the Spirit to fill us with his consolation;
it becomes a wondrous remedy for loneliness and homesickness.
It allows us to feel the closeness of the Good Shepherd”
“he does not imprison us in uniformity, but disposes us to accept one
another in our differences. That happens when people live by the Spirit”.
Witness of life – “I think of the assistance you provide to our brothers
and sisters who arrive from elsewhere, of your humble Christian presence
and the witness you daily bear in the workplace by your understanding
and patience, joy and meekness, kindness and a spirit of dialogue”
“The Spirit unites us and sends us; he gathers
us in communion and sends us on mission”.
“Let us entrust to him in prayer our shared journey, and beg the
outpouring of his grace upon us, in a new Pentecost that will open
new horizons and quicken the pace of our journey of unity and peace”
Saturday 5, November 2022 - AWALI
Holy Mass at Bahrain National Stadium
“the prophet announces extraordinary news: the Messiah to come
will indeed be powerful, not in the manner of a commander who
wages war and rules over others, but as the “Prince of Peace” (v. 5),
who reconciles people with God and with one another”.
“His great power does not come from the force of violence,
but from the weakness of love. And this is Christ’s power: it
is love. Jesus gives us that same power, the power to love, to
love in his name, to love as he loved. How? unconditionally”
“That is what the Lord asks of us: not to dream idealistically of a world of
fraternity, but to choose, starting with ourselves, to practice universal fraternity,
concretely and courageously, persevering in good even when evil is done to us,
breaking the spiral of vengeance, disarming violence, demilitarizing the heart”.
The Apostle Paul echoes Jesus when he writes, “Do not be
overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good” (Rom 12:21)
“we need to “disarm,” to shatter the chains of evil, to break the spiral
of violence, and to put an end to resentment, complaints and self-pity.
We need to keep loving, always. This is Jesus’ way of giving glory
to the God of heaven and building peace on earth”
“This very land is a living image of coexistence in diversity,
and indeed an image of our world, increasingly marked by
the constant migration of peoples and by a pluralism of
ideas, customs and traditions”
Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you” (vv. 43-44)
“Jesus, you who love me, teach me to love like you.
Jesus, you who forgive me, teach me to forgive like
you. Send your Spirit, the Spirit of love, upon me.”
Meeting with the Youth in Sacred Heart School
“you are the good leaven destined to rise, to
break down many social and cultural barriers and
to foster the growth of fraternity and innovation”
Three small invitations - My first invitation: to embrace the culture
of care. - To care means to develop an inner attitude of empathy, an
attentive gaze that takes us out of ourselves, a gentle presence that
overcomes our lack of concern and makes us take an interest in other people
“how beautiful it is to care for others, to build relationships! – how can we
care for the heart? By trying to be silent and listen to it. Try to make time to
keep in touch with what is going on inside you, to appreciate the gift that
you are, to take hold of your life and not let it slip through your fingers”
“Tell God about yourself and the people you meet each day, those he has given
you as companions on your journey. Bring him their faces, their joys and sorrows,
for there is no prayer without relationships, just as there is no joy without love”
“to love is to take another person to heart, to care for
others, to offer one’s time and gifts to those in need, to take
risks and make life a gift that generates even greater life”
second invitation: to spread fraternity - “Those who do not love a
brother or sister whom they have seen, cannot love God whom they
have not seen. The commandment we have from him is this, that those
who love God must love their brothers and sisters also” (1 Jn 4:20-21).
“Has not one God created us? Why then
are we faithless to one another?” (Mal 2:10).
third invitation: accept the challenge of making decisions in life. – “Press forward
without fear and never alone! God never leaves you alone; he waits for you to
ask him to give you a hand. He accompanies and guides us, not by powerful
signs and miracles, but by speaking gently through our thoughts and feelings;
and also through our teachers, friends, parents and everyone who wants to help us”
“through silent prayer and intimate dialogue with him, treasuring in our
hearts what helps us and gives us peace. God’s light illumines the maze
of thoughts, emotions and feelings in which we often find ourselves”
“We need your creativity, your dreams and your courage, your
charm and your smiles, your contagious joy and that touch of
craziness that you can bring to every situation, which helps to
break us out of our stale habits and ways of looking at things”
Sunday, 6 November 2022 - Prayer Meeting and Angelus
with Bishops, Priests, Consecrated Persons, Seminarians
and Pastoral Workers in Sacred Heart Church in Manama
“I am pleased to be here, in the midst of this Christian community
that clearly manifests its “Catholic” face: a universal face, a
Church made up of people from various parts of the world
who come together to profess our one faith in Christ”
“within the depths of
the soul, in the intimacy
of the heart, there flows
the calm and silent fresh
water of the Spirit, who
refreshes our deserts
and restores life to what
is parched, who washes
away all that soils
us and quenches our
thirst for happiness”
“All my springs are in you” (Ps. 87:7), and the prophet
Ezekiel had spoken of a fountain flowing like a river from
the Temple, to irrigate the land and make it fruitful (cf. Ezek 47:1-12)
‘If any one thirst, let them come to me and drink?’” (Jn. 7:37),
for “rivers of living water” will flow from his heart (v. 38).
three great gifts that the Holy Spirit grants us and asks us
to receive and to reflect in our lives: joy, unity and prophecy
JOY - “The fresh water that the Lord wants to make
flow in the “deserts” of our humanity, earthly and
frail, is the certainty that we are never alone”
“it is important that we spread the joy of the Gospel through a lively
pastoral outreach, especially to young people and families, and
through fostering vocations to the priesthood and the religious life”
UNITY - “All those who receive him receive the Father’s love
and are made his sons and daughters” (cf. Rom 8:15-16),
“when the Spirit of the risen
Jesus descends on his disciples,
he becomes the source of unity
and fraternity, opposed to
every form of selfishness.
He inaugurates the one
language of love, so that
different human languages
no longer remain distant
and incomprehensible.
He breaks down the barriers
of distrust and hate, in order
to create space for acceptance
and dialogue. He frees us from
fear and instills the courage to
go out and meet others with
the unarmed and disarming
force of mercy”
Saint Paul says – “to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is
one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope” (Eph 4:3-4)
PROPHECY
“Saint Paul tells us:
“Desire the spiritual
gifts, especially that
you may prophesy”
(1 Cor 14:1).
Prophecy makes us
capable of putting the
Beatitudes into practice
in everyday situations,
building meekly,
yet resolutely God’s
kingdom, in which love,
justice and peace are
opposed to every form
of selfishness, violence
and degradation”
“the agreement that was signed and which concerns the situation
in Ethiopia represents hope. I encourage everyone to support this
commitment for a lasting peace, so that, with the help of God, those
involved may continue to journey on the paths of dialogue and that
the population may soon find once more a peaceful and dignified life”
“I thank His Majesty the King and the authorities
of this country, and also the Minister of Justice
who is here with us, for their exquisite hospitality”.
“I encourage you to
persevere in your spiritual
and ecclesial journey with
steadfastness and joy.
Let us now invoke the
maternal intercession of
the Virgin Mary, whom
I am happy to venerate
as Our Lady of Arabia.
May she help us always
to be guided by the
Holy Spirit, and keep us
joyful and united in
affection and love”

“within the depthsof the soul, in the intimacy of the heart, there flows the calm and silent fresh water of the Spirit, who refreshes our deserts and restores life to what is parched, who washes away all that soils us and quenches our thirst for happiness”
  • 52.
“All my springsare in you” (Ps. 87:7), and the prophet Ezekiel had spoken of a fountain flowing like a river from the Temple, to irrigate the land and make it fruitful (cf. Ezek 47:1-12)
  • 53.
‘If any onethirst, let them come to me and drink?’” (Jn. 7:37), for “rivers of living water” will flow from his heart (v. 38).
  • 54.
three great giftsthat the Holy Spirit grants us and asks us to receive and to reflect in our lives: joy, unity and prophecy
  • 55.
JOY - “Thefresh water that the Lord wants to make flow in the “deserts” of our humanity, earthly and frail, is the certainty that we are never alone”
  • 56.
“it is importantthat we spread the joy of the Gospel through a lively pastoral outreach, especially to young people and families, and through fostering vocations to the priesthood and the religious life”
  • 57.
UNITY - “Allthose who receive him receive the Father’s love and are made his sons and daughters” (cf. Rom 8:15-16),
  • 58.
“when the Spiritof the risen Jesus descends on his disciples, he becomes the source of unity and fraternity, opposed to every form of selfishness. He inaugurates the one language of love, so that different human languages no longer remain distant and incomprehensible. He breaks down the barriers of distrust and hate, in order to create space for acceptance and dialogue. He frees us from fear and instills the courage to go out and meet others with the unarmed and disarming force of mercy”
  • 59.
Saint Paul says– “to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope” (Eph 4:3-4)
  • 60.
PROPHECY “Saint Paul tellsus: “Desire the spiritual gifts, especially that you may prophesy” (1 Cor 14:1). Prophecy makes us capable of putting the Beatitudes into practice in everyday situations, building meekly, yet resolutely God’s kingdom, in which love, justice and peace are opposed to every form of selfishness, violence and degradation”
  • 61.
“the agreement thatwas signed and which concerns the situation in Ethiopia represents hope. I encourage everyone to support this commitment for a lasting peace, so that, with the help of God, those involved may continue to journey on the paths of dialogue and that the population may soon find once more a peaceful and dignified life”
  • 62.
“I thank HisMajesty the King and the authorities of this country, and also the Minister of Justice who is here with us, for their exquisite hospitality”.
  • 63.
“I encourage youto persevere in your spiritual and ecclesial journey with steadfastness and joy. Let us now invoke the maternal intercession of the Virgin Mary, whom I am happy to venerate as Our Lady of Arabia. May she help us always to be guided by the Holy Spirit, and keep us joyful and united in affection and love”
