3. MESSAGE FROM THE HOLY FATHER FRANCIS
FOR THE XXXVII WORLD YOUTH DAY - 2023
4. Mary became the temple of God, image ofthe Church
on the way, the Church that goes out and puts itself
at service, the Church that bears the Good News.
PILGRIMAGE OF POPE
FRANCIS TO FATIMA
5. The Mother of the Lord is a model for young people on the move, not immobile in front of the mirror
contemplating their own image or "trapped" in the nets. She was totally outward oriented. She is the
paschal woman, in a permanent state of exodus, going out of herself towards the great Other who is God
and towards others, her brothers and sisters, especially those most in need, as her cousin Elizabeth was.
6. Mary is an
example of a
young person
who does not
lose time
seeking
attention
or approval
from others
7. The Mother of God walks in the
midst of her people, moved by a
loving tenderness, and assumes
their anxieties and vicissitudes
8. He himself, has infinite love for each one of us, he brings salvation and the new life
to us. And Mary is the model of how to welcome this immense gift into our lives
and communicate it to others, making us in turn carriers of Christ, carriers of
his compassionate love, of his generous service to suffering humanity.
9. MEETING WITH THE AUTHORITIES, CIVIL SOCIETY AND THE DIPLOMATIC CORPS
Cultural Center of Belém, Lisbon - Wednesday, August 2, 2023
10. Facing the ocean, the Portuguese reflect on the immense
spaces of the soul and the meaning of life in the world
11. today's big problems are global, but we often experience our inability
to respond to them, precisely because when we face common
problems the world is divided, or at least not cohesive enough, unable
to create a united front against what harms us all. It seems that
planetary injustices, wars, climate and immigration crises run faster
than the ability, and often the will, to face these challenges together.
12. «in its relations with the rest of the world […] Europe will contribute to peace,
security, the sustainable development of the planet, solidarity and mutual
respect between peoples, free and fair trade, the eradication of poverty
and protection of human rights» (art. 1.4/2.5). Treaty of Lisbon.
13. the world needs Europe, the real Europe; it needs its role
as a builder of bridges and peace in its eastern part,
in the Mediterranean, in Africa and in the Middle East
14. I think of so many unborn children and the elderly abandoned to their fate;
in difficulty for welcoming, protecting, promoting and integrating those
who come from far away and knock on the doors;in the solitude of many
families who struggle to bring into the world and raise their children
15. You are not in
the streets to
shout in rage,
but to share the
hope of the
Gospel, the
hope of life.
16. The second laboratory is the future. And the future is the youth….. – Europe… is called
to rediscover itself as a generator of life and care, to invest with vision in the future,
in families and children, to promote intergenerational alliances, in which erase the
past with a stroke of the pen, but instead foster links between young and old.
17. How beautiful it is to rediscover ourselves as brothers and sisters, working for the common
good, leaving behind contrasts and differences of viewpoints! Here too we have young people
who, with their cry for peace and their desire to live, lead us to break down the rigid
barriers of belonging erected in the name of different opinions and beliefs.
18. VESPERS WITH THE BISHOPS, PRIESTS, DEACONS,
CONSECRATED, SEMINARIANS AND PASTORAL AGENTS
Jerónimos Monastery, Lisbon - Wednesday, August 2, 2023
19. I thank Bishop José Ornelas Carvalho for the words he addressed to me; I wish
to pray with you that, as he said, we can be, together with the young, bold in
embracing "God's dream and finding ways for a joyful, generous and
transforming participation, for the Church and humanity".
20. Christ wants to be close to people, precisely in the places and
situations where people live, struggle, hope, sometimes having
failures and frustrations on their hands, just like those fishermen
who had not caught fish during the night, nothing!
21. Jesus continues to reach out, holding his beloved Bride (the Church).
Let us take our efforts and our tears to the Lord, in order to be able
to face pastoral and spiritual situations, dialoguing with each
other with an open heart to discover new paths to follow.
22. To you, priest, consecrated man, consecrated woman, bishop: are you satisfied only with
the past behind you or do you dare to cast the nets again with enthusiasm for fishing?"
This is what the Lord asks of us: that we revive the restlessness for the gospel.
23. great missionaries,
Father António Vieira,
called "Paiaçu", - we do
not have to evade this
present time because
it scares us nor take
refuge in forms and
styles of the past.
No, this is the time of
grace that the Lord
gives us to venture
into the sea of
evangelization
and mission.
24. Sail into the deep - "If you say so, I will lower the nets" (Lk 5,5)
26. Leaving those regrets, one takes the strength again to sail into the sea,
without ideologies, without spiritual worldliness that engenders clericalism.
27. A young man from
Lisbon, San Juan de
Brito, was a native of
here, who centuries
ago, in the midst of
many difficulties,
went to India and
began to talk and
dress in the same
way as those he
met in order to
announce Jesus
29. All together- Peter guides the boat, but everyone is in the
boat and everyone is called to cast the nets. All of us.
30. "They signaled to their companions in the other boat to come and help them" (Lk 5:7).
31. "Go to the confines and bring everyone, everyone, everyone:
healthy, sick, young and old, good and sinful. Everyone."
32. If there is no dialogue, if there is no co-responsibility,
if there is no participation, the Church grows old
33. In the Church we help each other, we support each other and we are
called to spread a constructive climate of fraternity outside as well.
34. be fishers of men - fishing people out of the water means helping them
out of the abyss where they had sunk, saving them from the evil that
threatens to drown them, resurrecting them from every form of death.
35. Saint Ambrose, says
«the instruments of
apostolic fishing are
like nets; the nets
do not cause the
death of the one
who is trapped, but
they keep him alive,
they take him out
of the abysses
into the light»
(Exp. Luc. IV, 68-79).
36. As a Church, we have been entrusted
with the task of immersing ourselves
in the waters of this sea, casting the
net of the Gospel, without pointing
fingers, without accusing, but rather
bringing to the people of our time a
proposal for life, that of Jesus: to
bring the Gospel, inviting them to
the party, to a multicultural society;
bring the closeness of the Father
to situations of precariousness,
of increasing poverty, especially
among the young; bringing the
love of Christ where the family
is fragile and relationships
are wounded; transmit the joy of
the Spirit where demoralization
and fatalism reign.
37. do not turn the Church into a customs
house: only the just enter here,
those who are healthy, those who are well
married and all the rest remain outside.
No! the Church is not like that. It is for
the righteous and sinners, good and bad,
all, all, all. And then, may the
Lord help us to solve the problems.
38. MEETING WITH YOUNG UNIVERSITY STUDENTS
Portuguese Catholic University, Lisbon - Thursday, August 3, 2023
39. In the term "pilgrim" we see reflected human behavior, because each one is called
to face big questions that do not have a simple or immediate answer, but invite
us to embark on a journey, to surpass ourselves, to go further.
40. Search and take the risk - "we are in the world, but we are not of the world" (cf. Jn 17,16).
41. Self-preservation is a temptation, it is a conditioned reflex of fear, which makes
us look at existence in a distorted way. If the seeds preserved themselves, they
would completely waste their generating power and condemn us to starvation;
if winters preserved themselves, there would be no wonder of spring
42. It would be a waste to think of a university committed to training the
new generations if it were only to perpetuate the current elitist and unequal
system of the world, in which higher education is a privilege for a few.
43. Am I locked in my bubble or am I running the risk of leaving my security to
be a practicing Christian, a craftsman of justice, a craftsman of beauty?
44. Your diploma for studies , should not be seen only as a license to build
personal wealth, but rather as a mandate to dedicate oneself to making
a society that is more just, more inclusive, and more developed.
45. Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen, - "I would like social justice to be
achieved, the reduction of the differences between rich and poor"
46. we need an integral ecology; we need to listen to the suffering of the planet
together with that of the poor; we need to put the drama of desertification
along with that of the refugees, the issue of migrations next to the drop in
birth rates; we need to deal with the material dimension of life within a
spiritual dimension. Do not create polarizations but joint visions.
47. It is not enough for a Christian to be convinced, he must be convincing. Our actions
are called to reflect the beauty — at once joyous and radical — of the Gospel
48. it is the incarnation that allows us to be amazed by the beauty that
Christ reveals through each brother and sister, each man and woman.
49. The Virgin Mary, with her wisdom, is the true "regent" of the house, whose objective
is not exclusively profit, but rather care, and coexistence, well-being, physical and
spiritual for all, and also the power to share with the poor and strangers.
50. MEETING WITH THE YOUTH OF SCHOLAS OCCURRENTES
Headquarters of Scholas Occurentes de Cascais - Thursday, August 3,
2023
51. The life of man, our human life, is to make a cosmos out of chaos, that is,
out of what doesn't make sense, out of the disordered, the chaotic, to make
a cosmos, that is meaningful, open, inviting, and comprehensive.
52. This virtual brush… is a weapon for peace. It looks like a gun because you're
going to click the trigger here, but instead of killing, with this stroke you're
going to paint the wall, you're also going to be touching a virtual world.
53. This is the Good Samaritan, and none of us
is exempt from being a Good Samaritan.
55. You have been called by your name. None of us is a Christian by chance, we were
all called by name. At the beginning of the web of life, before the talents we have,
before the shadows of the wounds we carry within, we have been called.
56. We are loved just as we are, not as we would like to
be, but as we are now. And this is the starting point
of WYD, but above all the starting point of life.
Guys and girls, we are loved as we are…
57. Jesus trusts you, trusts each one of you, each one of us, because for
Jesus each one of us matters to him, each one of you matters to him
58. We are his Church, we are the community of those who are called; we are not
the community of the best, no, we are all sinners, but we are called as we are.
59. Jesus calls me as I am, not as I would like to be. We are a community of
brothers and sisters of Jesus, sons and daughters of the same Father.
60. In the Church, no one is superfluous. There is
room for everyone. Just as we are; all of us.
61. He hugs us all. He shows us Jesus on the cross, who
opened his arms so wide to be crucified and die for us.
62. God loves us, God loves us as we are, not as we would like to be or as society would like
us to be. As we are! He calls us with the defects we have, with the limitations we have
and with the desire we have to move on in life. God calls us that. Trust, because
God is a Father and he is a Father who loves us and a Father who cherishes us
