2. It is very hard to identify the main target
audiences for The Woman in Black as they have
gone for as big as a target as possible even
releasing a cut version of the film in British
cinemas so that is would get a 12 age rating form
the bbfc.
With that being said, if we look at the Hollywood profiling for mainstream
films, we can see that the 12 age rating puts the film in the under 25 age
rating, as for the gender, I believe that there the film doesn't directly go after
either one, rather it goes for both, making them, their primary audience.
Daniel Radcliffe, who was the main star of the film as well as one of its selling
points, could be seen as a way the get ‘fan-girls’ to go see the film but the
same could be said for a younger male audience.
Their secondary audience would be people aged over 25, the reason for this is
they wanted everybody to watch the film so they kept the film opened to
anyone who was a fan of horror, Daniel Radcliff or anything that was linked
to the film, including the original film and the book the film was based on.
3. Putting it simply, in any way that it could. There are many reasons for this
raging from the revival of Hammer Horror, Daniel Radcliff wanting to be seen
as more than the actor of Harry Potter and many other reasons.
Countless
websites,
newspapers,
magazines, talk shows and posters (among
other things) were used to advertise the
film, they helped to get people to see the
film in something that interested so they
would pay more attention, but as well as
having the effect that people who might not
know about the films may still do because
they saw it popular places.
Daniel Radcliff himself also did quite a lot
of interviews so that the film would gain
more popularity as people would know who
he is and would want to see the film
because they like and the work he has done
so far, but also would definitely hear about
the film because the reputation and
popularity he already has, even if they may
not like him

5. I believe that the marketing materials used for the film were
appropriate in the respect that they used a big media based
approach when reaching their target audience and spreading
the word of the film. Also the design of the posters and other
marketing materials including merchandise only helped to
get people more enthusiastic about the film.
Daniel Radcliffe was heavily used in the marketing process of
the film. He was able to reach the primary audience through
his fan base from Harry Potter which helped the film in a lot
of ways and helped spread the word of his appearance in the
film, this was doe by him going to several talk shows and
having many interviews where he would talk more about the
film and because people liked him they would actually listen
than thinking of it as just advertisement about something
they didn't care.
6. The release of the film was big with all the publicity
from the advertising campaign the films estimated
budget was $17,000,000.
The opening weekend in the USA made $20,874,072
showing on 2,855 screens.
In the UK the opening weekend made £3,153,020
showing on 412 screens following make a word
wide $127,730,736.

8. The
production budget (according to IMDb) is
$17,000,000, this is only an estimate as the actual cost to
make the film was never released.
Although this is a very high cost for the film, it also
helped to get more people to know about it and the
overall gross the film made is almost 10 times of that.
The film had a huge impact on the
film industry as it became the most
successful British horror film in
history, this spurred on other
studios to make similar paranormal
films to try and match the success
of The Woman In Black.
There will be a sequel to the film
(according to IMDb), in 2014, The
Woman in Black: Angel of Death.
9. I feel that there are two reasons why this film
was so successful. One of the main being the
fans of Daniel Radcliffe. They helped the film to
get noticed because it would be something that
they very patiently care about. A lot of the
public may know how successful Harry Potter
was, as well as they having seen what he was
capable of as an actor. This only helped the film
as Daniel himself also promoted the film y
having numerous interviews and going to talk
shows as the success of the film would also
further
help
his
career.
Another reason why I think this film was so successful was of all the media
based advertising involved with it. It was hard not to see the trailer pop up on
screen or adverts down the sidebars of all your social networking site and even
looking through magazine or newspapers there was always an article about the
new release. It was the new best thing it played in your head that everyone is
going to see this amazing film and you had to be apart of that experience.
