What does “Islam” mean?
The word الإسلام [Islam] is an infinitive word derived from س ل م [silm] root in if‘al pattern and used as noun and infinitive. The word silm means “release/keeping away; and to be distant from fear, doubt, trouble, lack of peace, unhappiness, fight, war, pain, suffering, material and spiritual inconveniences, weakness and decaying, and all the negativities.” This word is also the root of salim, selam, teslim, Islam etc. The word’s “Islam” form means “strengthening” [removal from problems, worries, fear, unhappiness, fights, wars, and similar negative things]. Hence, the religion Islam means the “the religion that strengthens humans [entire range of principles that protects and secures people by putting a distance between them and problems, worries, war, weakness, spiritual illness, unhappiness, and similar things].”

SURAH AL-HUJURAT (THE CELLS)
MEDINAN PERIOD
Division: 647
1O you who have believed! Do not put yourselves forward between two hands
of Allah and His Messenger/do not bring forth your ideas in the religion. And
surrender under the guardianship of Allah. Surely, Allah is the Most Hearing, the
Most Knowing.
2O you who have believed! Do not raise your voices over the voice of the
Prophet. Do not call Prophet with raised voice as you call each other with raised
voice; lest you transgress in respect and your deeds become wasted.
3Surely, as for those who lower their voices before the Messenger of Allah;
they are the ones whose hearts Allah tests so they may surrender under the
guardianship of Allah. For them will be forgiveness, protection and a great reward.
4Surely, those who call you from the back of their cells; most of them do not
act wisely.
5And had they had patience until you come to them, it would have been better
for them. and Allah is the Most Forgiving of the sins of His servants, the One Who
does not punish them and the Possessor of Forgiveness, the Most Merciful.
6O you who have believed! When a man who has gone astray from the
righteous path brings you news, investigate/verify its source. Or, you may
attack/harm a people and then become repented.
7,8And surely, know that the Messenger is among you. Had he followed you for
so many matters, you would have surely been in trouble. But Allah has made you
love the faith and made it a jewelry for your hearts as a favor and blessing from Him.
He has made blasphemy; conscious denial of the Divinity of Allah and the fact that
He is Rabb, going astray from the righteous path and rebellion evil to you. They are
the wise/righteous people. And Allah is the Most Knowing, the Best Law-Maker, the
One Who makes incorruptible.
9And if two groups from among the believers are made to fight each other,
immediately make peace between them. should one of them attack the other, fight
against the attacking side until they return to the command of Allah. And if they
should return, make peace among them with justice and treat them justly. Surely,
Allah likes those who act justly.

10Believers are only brothers. Therefore, make peace between your brothers
and surrender under the guardianship of Allah so you may receive mercy.
11O you who have believed! Do not let a people mock other people. The people
whom they mock may be better than them. do not let women mock other women.
The women whom they mock may be better than them. And do not mock yourselves;
humiliate nor scorn; do not call each other with offensive nick names; do not insult
each other, do not despise. How evil is to be accused of going astray from the
righteous path! And whoever resists repenting; they are the ones who do wrong; act
against their own good.
12O you who have believed! Avoid much assumption. Surely, some
assumptions are sin. Do not investigate each other’s faults. Do not backbite each
other/speak ill behind each other’s back. Would one of you like to eat his dead
brother’s flesh? You find it despicable. And surrender under the guardianship of
Allah. Surely, Allah is the Acceptor of repentances, the One Who gives chance to
repent, the Most Merciful.

13O people! We created you from a man and a woman, made you nations and
groups so you might meet each other. Surely, in the eye of Allah, the most precious
among you is the one who surrenders himself under the guardianship of Allah the
most. Truly, Allah is the Most Knowing, the Most Acquainted.

14Bedouin Arabs said: “We believe!”. Say: “No you do not, but say ‘Eslamna’
[We have made incorruptible/assured ourselves]! Faith has not yet penetrated into
your hearts. And should you obey Allah and His Messenger, He will not let any of
your deeds be wasted”. Truly, Allah is the Most Forgiving, the Most Merciful!
15Believers are the ones who believe in Allah and His Messenger and do not
doubt about this and who make their best efforts in the path of Allah with their
wealth and lives. They are the truthful.
16Say: “Do you teach your religion to Allah? Yet, Allah knows that which is in
the Heavens and on the Earth”. And Allah is the Most Knowing of all things.

17They expect you to be grateful to them as they have converted to Islam. Say:
“Do not expect gratefulness from me for your conversion to Islam. Quite contrary, if
you are righteous, be grateful to Allah for He has made you reach the faith”.
18Surely, Allah knows the unseen, the unheard, the unfelt of the Heavens and
the Earth. And Allah is the Most Seeing of what you do.
