2. • What is the respiratory system?
Your lungs make up one of the largest
organs in your body, and they work
with your respiratory system to allow
you to take in fresh air, get rid of
stale air, and even talk. Let's take a
tour of the lungs!
3. How does the respiratory system work?
• The job of your respiratory system is very simple: To
bring oxygen into your body, and remove the carbon
dioxide from your body. Your body needs oxygen to
survive.
4. Names of the elements of the system:
• Nose, nose hair, lungs, windpipe and mouth
5. The respiratory system inside the body
Our lungs are amazing machines that can supply large
amounts of oxygen to our blood. Sometimes the lungs don't
work as well as they should. This can be because of a
disease, allergies, or simply a cold or the flu.
6. Names and definitions
• Nose; Your nose lets you smell and it's a big part of why you are able to taste
things. The nose is also the main gate to the respiratory system, your body's
system for breathing. Let's be nosy and find out some more about the nose.
• Lungs: Your lungs are in your chest, and they are so large that they take up most
of the space in there. You have two lungs, but they aren't the same size the way
your eyes or nostrils are.
• Mouth The first thing that comes to mind when you think of your mouth is
probably eating — or kissing! But your mouth's a lot more than an input slot for
food or a tool for smooching your sweetie.
• Windpipe: Your windpipe is the tube in your body that carries air into your lungs
when you breathe.
