2. SLIDE 2 - EXAMPLES OF PRIMARY AND SECONDARY
SOURCES
Examples of Primary and Secondary Sources
with a description of how others have used
visual language in their work.
I researched Paolozzi, and Picasso to compare
and study their differences so I could gain a
better view of what to create for my collage.
3. SLIDE 3 – THE FORMAL ELEMENTS
In these drawings I have used various formal
element such as line, tone, form and pattern.
This has helped me create the idea that the
items in the drawing are all 3D, when in fact,
they are not. It also helped me to create a
sense of depth in the piece.
I practiced using a variety of mediums and
mixed media like in this picture where I used
charcoal and pencil to create the effects I
wanted.
4. SLIDE 4 – VISUAL LANGUAGE IN MY OWN WORK
By researching other artist, I have been able to
use their styles, colour schemes and themes in
my own works.
I researched various different artists with
different styles and techniques to further
accentuate my own drawings, paintings and
collages. I researched Klimt, van Gogh,
Matisse and Dürer and copied their art styles
in a studies of their work. I then tried to apply
it to my own work.
5. SLIDE 5 – MIXED MEDIA AND TECHNIQUES
Mixing different media can enable the artwork to
become more lifelike and interesting as different
media have different strengths. In class we created
large drawings on A3 paper, which we then stuck
onto brown paper so we could extend the drawing
further using ink, chalk and charcoal.
I also experimented with 3D media by creating a
sculpture based off my still life studies. I
interpreted the drawing and then used cardboard
and gum strip to create form and shape. I tore parts
of the cardboard and stripped off the backing in an
attempt to create texture.
6. SLIDE 6 - SAFETY
Whilst I was experimenting with different media,
safety was paramount, especially with our 3D
sculpture and collograph printing. I had to get
familiar with the media I was using so that when it
came to the actual process, I was able to do it
confidently. We had an induction before any of our
processes to make sure that we didn’t make any
mistakes and kept ourselves safe.
7. EVALUATION SUMMARY
During this project, I found the work load and time management very difficult as I kept wanting to go back to
previous work and finish it to an aesthetically pleasing standard. For me, the most difficult part of the project was
making and designing our collages. I've never felt particularly comfortable with making collages. For me, I felt
that this part of the course was harder as it was difficult to research and the processes we had to use were a little
complex. I used to think it was easy to create collages, but no I know better. Towards the end of the project, my
quality of work and amount of work done, dropped because at the beginning of the project, I felt like I had all the
time in the world, and then when the due date was announced it was like one big wake up call, to which I tried to
complete as much work as possible to a pleasing standard but I ended up not finishing much of It because I tried
to make all my artwork perfect, rather than focusing on the writing and researching tasks.
When researching, I found various secondary sources that I liked and wanted to incorporate into my own work
and use their ideas to inspire other pieces of mine. I regularly used the internet and various art books from home
to help further my understanding. Using other artists inspiration and ideas enabled me to create various designs
in their styles before I finally picked a final design, for example my collage work.
In my works, I think the ones that stand out to me in terms of quality and precision are my painted studies. I think
that because I feel more comfortable with painting and colour, it impacted my work (in a good way) because I
was able to confidently display my talents. I think this really reflected in my paintings.
For many of my final pieces, I liked them as I felt like I had accomplished something because I had watched my
progression as we studied different techniques and styles. I think this was reflected in many of my final pieces. I
felt like my understanding of 3D form really stood out and helped to change my artwork for the better.
