SCHAPE in the Classroom
Dick DeVenzio
Spirit
Our passion and enthusiasm. We inspire coaches and athletes to get in touch with what they truly love about the game.
Communication
We communicate our values in everything that we say and do. We use a creative vocabulary to make our teaching and communication more memorable and effective.
Hustle
We consistently look to do more than our share and more than what’s expected.
Approach
Our actions are always aligned with our purpose. We are always conscious of and consistent in our approach, making sure that our actions are sourced from our values.
Precision
We pay attention to the little things in all that we do and maintain an unwavering commitment to excellence.
Enhancement
We continually look for ways to make our curriculum, our staff, and the athletes and coaches that we work with the very best they can be.
2. Maximize your experience in my classroom by !
• Take detailed notes
• Get outside your comfort zone
• No PID’s – Personal Isolation Devices –
ipod/phones/etc.
• Drop your expectations – clean slate
• Drop your comparisons – our habit is to compare –
drop that habit – self assess is the key and your own
improvement
• Accumulate the little things – to improve you must
• Accumulate the little things…the one percent-ers…just
get one Golden Nugget per day
• If I say anything twice – write it down – if it’s on the
board write it down
• I will repeat things as many times as you like acronyms
3. Notes on leadership and intangibles
• Leadership is about energy – it is a full time
job
• Leadership is about extra – they always do
extra
• Leadership is about influence – ability to
positively affect the direction of the group
4. Classroom SCHAPE S - SPIRIT
• Positive Energy that you bring to the classroom
• Good Classrooms participate with zest and energy
• Great Classroom environments are going to demand energy/spirit
• Spirit creates consistency
• What you do in school will determine how successful you are in life
• Spirit/Energy must be there all the time
• What sucks energy/spirit from school
• *the times you don’t feel like it, are the times when spirit an energy are
needed the most*
• You need to be able to create energy HOW
• 2PPM’s – two positives per minute
• Rhythm claps and claps in general – builds energy – elevates human
performance
• You need to understand when it’s needed
• Positive touch – Fist bumps, thumbs up- saluting
• Be the change you wish to see in your classroom–
5. C – Communication
• Why don’t people communicate?
They are too into themselves
Fatigue – too tired to communicate - Fatigue can not be a factor
You don’t know what to say – and how to say it.
• The most important skill in life is to communicate
• If you are quiet, a good teacher will think you are selfish
• If the only way you lead is by example, then you are a very
poor leader
• I'll only quiet down if they quiet down - well he's on the
computer
• Think about what a blind man would hear if he listened to our
classroom
6. NITE Communication
• N - Name – the most beautiful sound is the sound of your
name – use names first before the instruction
• I – Information – don’t just chatter give meaningful valuable
information – *reminders are key* and positive feedback – 2
PPMs
• T – Tone of Voice – sometimes it’s not what you say but how
you say it – leadership voice is needed –
calm, confident, encouraging tone, (but don’t get harsh when
you get loud)
• E – Eye contact – equals trust – give them locked in eye
contact – “hungry eyes”
o Use a little head nod so they know you know what they said
– 93% of all communication is non verbal
o Always communicate engagement
7. H – Hustle
• What do you do before a big test ?
• Everybody Hustles before a big test
• But Practice is where it counts ( classroom at home )
• What’s your Hustle like when nobody is
watching, when you’re tired
• Hustle is very contagious
• If You want your team/group to Hustle, then bring up
your hustle – you be the example
- Sheep Dog mentality – Relentless Persistence
- Hustle is not only in the classroom – it’s at
home, work, relationships , sports
- KEEP THE HERD TOGETHER
Always communicate engagement!
8. A – Approach
• The attitude you choose to bring to something
• Mental Toughness – What you choose to put your
focus on
– you have two choices
• Petty problems( my pencil is not sharpened, I don't like my seat, I
hate this subject)
• Noble minded – focus on a few things – How did I perform? Did we
complete our task.
• Start to view every negative circumstance as an
opportunity to show off your approach
– Approach to making mistakes
– Approach to authority - take your seat, stop talking, phone
away ,
– lock in
9. P – Precision
• Having the discipline to do something as well
as it can be done every single time even if it’s
uncomfortable or inconvenient, even when
the Teacher or anyone else isn’t looking
• * Have a ridiculous attention to detail*
• Going to have to build a permanent habit
through practice –
• PRACTICE MAKES PERMANENT!
10. E – Enhancement
• Positively and unselfishly contribute to an environment -
you are either contributing or contaminating in every
environment
• Choose to contribute
• Enhancers always have a habit of contributing
• Expect to do more than your share – ETDMTYS – always
expect to do more than what is required
Do you leave your environment better than you found it?
Teachers, Coaches, Employers love people who do extra.
One of the best ways to enhance is to add competition.
11. Food for thought
• No one can take away your confidence, only
you can give it away.-
• You are the only person that can control
– Preparation
– What you think about all day
– Exude Confidence
12. Confidence
• Add depth to areas of passion in your life
• Explore different passions
• In high school you can get unlimited desire free
• passion to anything you like.
• People will teach you for free because you are young.
• How do you find your passion, what would you do if no
one was looking or bothered you, for free.
• Add as much knowledge to your passion.
• I will not let anyone pay me for my time, only my
knowledge and creativity.
13. Appreciation
• Handwritten thank you note.
• Think about the people that add value to your life and show
them appreciation by writing them a letter.
• People that are part of your success, show appreciation.
• Show people that add value to your life, appreciation.
This allows you to have opportunity.
• You can't live a perfect day without showing appreciation in
your life.
