1. Bug Safari October 2009

2. We read lots of books about bugs this week. We talked about whether bugs are the same as insects. We went on a bug safari on Wednesday and took pictures of what we found. On Thursday, we looked at the pictures and tried to name the bugs. We also tried to decide if they were insects or not.

3. We don’t know what this is. Maybe an ant or maybe a beetle. Is it an insect? We don’t know. We can’t see its body.

4. There are hidden ants in this picture. Are they insects? Yes. Ants have a head, thorax, and abdomen.

5. It’s a roly poly! Is it an insect? No. It has more than three body segments.

6. This is an ant carrying a bigger ant. Is it an insect? Yes!

7. It is a dragonfly. Is it an insect? Yes. It has head, thorax, and abdomen.

8. It is a jumping spider. Is it an insect? No. It doesn’t have six legs.

9. We don’t know what this is.It was in the dirt under a tree. Is it an insect? We don’t know. Its body is too small to tell.

10. It is another roly poly. Is it an insect? No.

11. This looks like a moth. It is white and it flies. Is it an insect? Yes.

12. This is an ant pile. Are they insects? Yes.

13. This might be a stink bug. Is it an insect? We’re not sure. It looks like one, but we can’t see all the body parts.

14. Here is the stink bug on Haley’s leg. Is it an insect? Yes. We can see the body parts and legs now.

15. It is a butterfly. Is it an insect? Yes.

16. It is another butterfly. Is it an insect? Yes.

17. It is a bee. Is it an insect? Yes. It has six legs and wings.
