ELEPHANTS FREE
Translated from Sanskrit by

A story from Panchatantra
6. FABLE
A fable is a traditional short narrative
which teaches a moral lesson usually
with animals or birds as characters
7. SUMMARY
The story focuses on the theme of mutual understanding.
It highlights the importance of friendship and mutual
help. The mice, the old settlers in a ruined village
occupied the chinks in the floors of houses and temples
there with their children and grandchildren. They found
happiness in a variety of festivities. One day, on their way
in search of water an elephant king and his herd marched
through the mouse community, crushing the faces, eyes,
heads and necks of many.
The mice held a convention to find an effective solution
to save themselves from the lumbering elephants. As a
solution a group of mice went to the lake and told the
elephant king what had happened. They prayed to him to
travel another path. After thinking for a while he granted
their request.
8. Years passed. The new king of the region ordered his
elephant trappers to trap all elephants. Accordingly they
trapped the elephant king and his herd. Then they tied the
elephants to stout trees in the forest with ropes. After the
trappers had gone, the elephant king remembered how he
had once saved the mice. He decided to seek their help.
When the mice heard about the matter they gathered by
thousands. They went to the forest at once and gnawed the
ropes and set their old friends- the captive elephants free.
The story teaches us the moral that we should make
friends with others however strong or weak they may be.
