2. When Christopher Columbus arrived by mistake to the Americas he encountered a new world. According Ruben Martinez (narrator) we are too focused on the American/European pop culture. In other words we are less interested in the history that involves Spaniards and indigenous people who suffered just as much as Mexicans today. He brought with him several spices and seeds that were only found in the new world. One of the food imports was Teocicle also known as corn. He also brought indigenous people with him who were meant to be used as slaves thus the most valuable import from the new world.
3. Isabella and Ferdinand sent Christopher Columbus in a search for gold and expansion and a shorter trade route. Their royal tomb is located inside the Granada in Spain. They made a promise to Muslims, promising them the right to practice their religion without prosecution and then later broke their promise. They quickly found that religion was a very powerful tool for their empire. Isabella wanted to convert all indigenous people into Christians and threatened prosecution against those who enslaved indigenous people. She was a very contradicting ruler because she used many indigenous people as slaves to the throne.
4. The Spaniards forced the indigenous people to dig for silver at Potosi Mountain. Indigenous people believed in Pachamama (a god). It is believed that as the Spaniards were in the middle of converting the Indigenous people into Christianity both Spaniards and indigenous people came to an agreement which allowed both religions to convert their god into a Catholic saint.
5. Spaniards created a cast system in order for Spaniards to maintain their wealth and individuality which accidentally caused segregation between Mestizosand clear Spaniard blood. Kinship was promoted because the children who were the product of unions between Spaniards and others were forced to live under the Catholic religion. Charles the fifth (grandson of Isabella and Ferdinant). Phillip wanted to conquer England, thus his desire to conquer all led to the destruction of the Spanish throne. Bartolome De Las Casas believed in “you could save souls and become rich.” His determination to turn indigenous people into Christians pushed him to become a priest.
