- All of this remote infrastructure is hard to support, often requiring staff to fly-and-fix if anything goes wrong. This infrastructure is cost-inefficient because much of it is not purpose-built for branch environments and is massively underutilized and under-virtualized. This infrastructure leaves arguably your company’s most value asset – data – at risk. Forrester found as much as 50% of corporate data lives in branches. Finally, this infrastructure is subject to downtime because of the disasters – both natural ones like storms, but also manmade caused by human error.
- One of the key opportunities is to help customers solve challenges as it relates to branch IT in addition to those Alison and Heidi have highlighted. SteelFusion is…. The only branch converged infrastructure that delivers local user performance, data centralization, instant recovery, and lower TCO What this means is that we can now help customers simplify their branch office architecture – in turn helping them simplify overall management effort and lower risk – all while reducing costs from the branch. In the branch we see customers hosting and managing a range of workloads from common branch services like file and domain controllers and security services, to business-critical custom apps that need to run in a given site to support the business in that location. SteelFusion combines the full infrastructure stack – In addition to the goodness that SteelFusion provides, we add the Virtual Services Platform (VSP), which enables customers to seamlessly run VMware vSphere in the branch. We add to this Riverbed’s unique BlockStream storage delivery technology, which enables the data centralization. This is key to the branch because, unlike repurposed converged infrastructure solutions, for the branch customers have clearly communicated to us that the want to eliminate the risks and costs associated with storing data in the branch.
- Option 1- SteelFusion Recommended Option 1. Virtualization of all existing hosts (JD Edwards, SQL DB, File/Print/Antivirus, Domain Controller, Patch server) on SteelFusion appliance in every rig – which also provides WAN optimization for SaaS/O365 traffic and branch-DC traffic. This will eliminate the need for physical servers and backup (server, software and tape) at the rig Ease of provisioning for all new hosts, and new rig infrastructure/services 2. Centralize rig data, back to the DC, (thus removing storage from rig and sending it back to the DC) where it is protected away from the rig therefore eliminating the risk of potential 2 week data loss. Rig environment can be run from the DC in case of a rig disaster 3. Near real-time data protection of rig data, as data is synched continuously back to DC as it is written at the rig. 4. Centralization of data allows for a single point for data protection (data backup and restore, data replication) for all Customer Data at the DC 5. Data that requires constant access will be cached completely at the rig (mission critical data such as JD Edwards, SQL), while only active/hot data from other applications (File server for instance) are cached (80/20) at the rig. Option 2 – SteelHead with Virtualization 1. Virtualize all existing hosts (JD Edwards, SQL DB, File/Print/Antivirus, Domain Controller, Patch server) on a single appliance in every rig – which also provides WAN optimization for SaaS/O365 traffic and branch-DC traffic. - The challenge: A single server model, while functional, offers limited availability because if the server goes down, there is no substitute and work stops until a solution is found. A single server also offers limited scalability, with a clear and finite limite to what it can handle.
