  • In this section, we’ll look at customer projects and challenges and see how Riverbed addresses each.
  • Most companies use bandwidth as the scapegoat for all of the problems that remote offices have with application performance over the WAN. Poor performance, however, is the result of three equally important problems. Solving just one of them will not truly solve the problem. Next time data is requested the central steelhead needs to simply send references to data on the remote steelhead. If parts of the data has changed, the steelhead simply sends the chunks of data that have changed, with new references. The file is then reconstructed using a combination of the changed and unchanged data.

  • In this section we’ll examine how some of our customers have maximized their IT infrastructure performance with Riverbed.
  • Here are some examples of Riverbed in some of the largest organizations in the world. Of course, we work equally well for small and medium businesses, and can cost-effectively scale to meet your needs.
  • Now we’ll look at the products themselves and how they will work in your environment.
  • Riverbed has the most comprehensive WAN optimization solution available. Our technology allows us to leverage the same code base (RiOS) between the data centers, branch offices, and mobile workers. The main product lines are Steelhead appliance and Steelhead Mobile software.
  • It’s important to note that Steelhead Mobile, unlike other mobile products, was created by using the same code that runs the Steelhead appliance. So while Steelhead Mobile is a 1.0 product, it is based on 6 th generation code. Steelhead mobile contains many of the same features as the Steelhead appliance, including the features that give us greater speed than the competition as well as ease of use features. With our auto-discovery functionality, we can help ensure that Mobile clients can easily connect to the data center steelhead appliance with no changes to applications or clients. It contains the same application-independent foundation to support data reduction and TCP streamlining, as well as application streamlining modules to dramatically increase the performance of certain application protocols such as CIFS for file sharing and windows-based applications, MAPI for exchange, and HTTP for web applications. Version 1.0 of the software does not contain SSL optimization, so HTTPS is currently passed through.
  • Data Streamlining uses a proprietary algorithm to break up the data into small referenceable data chunks and store them in the central steelhead.   • A basic challenge with TCP is that it can only send a small amount of information at a time. Transport Streamlining allows Riverbed Steelhead appliances to communicate over the WAN with optimal TCP settings, facilitating more efficient communications. In addition, Steelhead appliances repack each packet with references instead of raw data. That means each packet could carry virtual megabytes of data instead of the typical 16, 64, or 100 K of data.
  • Lossy networks cause traditional TCP transfers to ramp up slowly and ramp back down at the first sign of packet loss. This causes the jagged sawtooth pattern in blue. Riverbed has enabled multiple features that allow for greater use of available bandwidth. These two features are HS-TCP and MX-TCP. They are useful in different scenarios. Both features are based on TCP. Unlike other approaches that use unfriendly or proprietary protocols, our features work based on what is proven in the market. HS-TCP is designed to ramp up faster, and back off more slowly, thereby enabling greater utilization of a large link with a single TCP connection. HS-TCP works well when this connection must share the bandwidth with other connections, and there is a “clean” circuit, ie, no packet loss. MX-TCP allows the administrator to configure a throughput limit, and allows Riverbed to use 100% of that limit. This works well even in scenarios with packet loss. MX-TCP will not back off in the face of packet loss, it will merely prioritize lost packets to be sent again.
  • Application Streamlining enables the central steelhead to act as a client and request data from the application server. This eliminates typical back-and-forth over the WAN and contains it to the LAN, where transactions are always very fast.
  • Riverbed has the greatest number of Application-specific optimizations of any vendor. By doing so, we provide the best possible performance across the applications that enterprises care about the most. We also support security features for many of these applications -- like SSL, encryption, and SMB signing. Compare to Cisco with only CIFS (file cache), MAPI (unencrypted only), NFS, and CIFS Print. Or Blue Coat with only Caches for CIFS, MAPI, HTTP, or SSL.

  • We’ve focused particularly on Data Protection use cases, as by their very nature they require moving a lot of data long distances over the WAN. Many specific features are included to optimize DR traffic with it’s heavy demands. These include the ability to do data reduction in memory, which is faster than on disk, or even adaptively depending on the load. We offer Quality of Service, so you can decide if you want to prioritize DR activities above or below other business use of the WAN. High Speed or Maximum Speed TCP allow you to get the absolute most from your available network capacity. CPU offload features use multiple cores and also let you find the right balance between more compression or faster throughout, depending on the data going across.
  • Here are a few examples of NetApp customers using Riverbed, but we can offer similar stories for all storage vendors.
  • This slide covers a range of network integration features, showing how the product can flexibly work in any environment.
  • Security is an important concern, and Riverbed has a thought this through carefully with a range of security features at every point, including encryption of data on the network and on disk, and role based administration. This can help for customers worried about audits for government or industry regulations or standards such as HIPAA or the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS).
  • Emphasize there is a model family for any size location and that they have performance specifications that can be cost effectively upgraded within a model family as WAN demand grows. Often this is enabled by just a software license key, although some do require hardware upgrade, but this can be easily added onsite. Interceptor lets customers cluster multiple Steelhead appliances for even greater scale and high availability in data centers.

  • Here we will discuss features and products that extend beyond the Steelhead appliance itself for a more complete solution.
  • Riverbed has the most comprehensive WAN optimization solution available. Our technology allows us to leverage the same code base (RiOS) between the data centers, branch offices, and mobile workers. The main product lines are Steelhead appliance and Steelhead Mobile software.
  • The Steelhead Mobile client gives you the same benefits as the appliances, but for any user, any where. When in ‘visible’ mode, end users can click on an icon in the system tray to get some basic information about their installation. Health, connectivity, data reduction, and even throughput are reported to the end user. From the support side, users can do a health check to determine how the steelhead mobile client is running. Users can restart their Steelhead Mobile client, and even reset their client to the administrator policy.
  • Deployment of Steelhead mobile is a snap. Deploy the Steelhead mobile controller in the Data center. This can be deployed anywhere that the CMC would be deployed – essentially anywhere that would be accessible to end user machines. Using MSI packages, you can push Steelhead Mobile software out to clients. MSI packages ease the install process. In machines without admin privileges they temporarily elevate privs. to do the install. MSI packages also enable easy rollback or upgrade, ensuring that lifetime maintenance of the software is easy. Steelhead mobile clients first get a policy and license from the Steelhead mobile controller. The policy includes an optimization policy. Licensing is concurrent licensing, meaning that the Steelhead Mobile controller manages a ‘pool’ of licenses and any client can receive a license if one is available. Finally, the Steelhead Mobile client connects directly with a steelhead appliance to perform optimization. Note that while the client has no bandwidth or TCP limitations the Steelhead appliance does. The end result is that mobile users now get the same LAN-like experience that Steelhead appliances have been able to deliver in branch offices.

  • This report is showing a summary of how much traffic has been streamlined, and as a result the effect on how big the WAN feels in terms of available capacity. Data that didn’t have to be sent over the WAN (thanks to optimization) is represented by gray bars - 408.5GB or 88% of data removed from the WAN link!

  • Historically, customers looking at WDS solutions were often faced with a compromise between security and performance. They either needed to accept subpar performance while maintaining stringent security measures, or lower the security bar in order to improve application performance with WDS. With RiOS, Riverbed eliminates this trade-off by offering security capabilities to protect data both in motion and at-rest. RiOS patent-pending SSL acceleration module allows customers to securely accelerate SSL encrypted traffic without scattering digital certifications and private keys around the enterprise with seamless integration. In addition, RiOS SSL capability works alongside existing SSL offload or load-balancing devices. Here’s how it works: 1. SSL Certificates and private keys copied to server-side Steelhead appliance (no certificate faking in branch offices) 2. Steelhead appliances use their own identity certificates to establish a secure connection (proactive or on-demand) 3. On secure data request, client handshake with server is intercepted by server-side Steelhead. server-side Steelhead SSL connection with origin server. server-side Steelhead establishes SSL connection with client. 4. Temporary session key is migrated from server-side Steelhead to client-side Steelhead, moving client’s SSL connection to client-side Steelhead. 5. Transfers are accelerated via all RiOS streamlining mechanisms RiOS also provides an optional IPSEC capability to encrypt other data traversing the WAN that is not otherwise protected. To protect data at-rest, RiOS supports AES encryption of the data store inside Steelhead appliances to meet security or compliance regulations. AES-128 has been selected as the U.S. government encryption standard and RiOS can encrypt data stores using AES-128 through AES-256 bit encryption schemes. It is worth noting that the Steelhead data store contains short, unique segments rather than entire files or application objects. This makes it hard for an attacker to recover files from the “ shredded” segments in the data store, even without encryption. The optional encryption of the data store provides an additional level of protection for the most security-conscious organizations.
  • This assumes we have seen the page before. When the steelhead has knowledge of the objects on the page, the client side steelhead can request all of the page objects in parallel (including images, scripts, and cascading style sheets). The WAN transfer is optimized by all the traditional RiOS streamlining approaches, dramatically reducing the data sent and minimizing chattiness. If the Steelhead appliance didn’t know about the web page, then it tracks the page and what objects are associated with it so that next time it can accelerate the request further. Note that even if it didn’t ‘know’ what objects to request in parallel, they would still be accelerated by Data Streamlining and Transport Streamlining in the traditional sense. The alternative approach to HTTP acceleration is parse and prefetch (P&P). P&P can only prefetch objects once the HTML page has been delivered, whereas the learning method can prefetch objects without having the page delivered first. The P&P method is useful, but cannot typically build a “tree” of knowledge that not only keeps track of all of the objects on an HTML page, but also keep track of objects embedded within scripts or CSS. The learning method has the capability do all of that. An additional point of confusion is that web browsers will often open multiple TCP connections, thereby making requests in parallel. But typically, they will only open 3 or 4 connections. On top of the penalty required to open these connections, there may be 10 or 20 or more objects on one page. Thus those 4 connections are not sufficient to truly accelerate the transfer of the page. Steelhead appliances can request all the objects at one, providing a much faster response time.
  • This is an enhancement to Riverbed’s patented auto-discovery approach. Auto-discovery is key for scaling in large networks and mesh networks, where administrators cannot spend time setting up large numbers of tunnels between sites and appliances. With this enhancement, the need to do manual configuration in multi-hop environments is eliminated. Steelhead appliances will automatically find the ‘right’ appliance to peer with, skipping any appliances in the middle. Previously a manual peering rule would have to be created in this scenario.
  • Failover has become an important concern for enterprises who want to ensure always-accelerated performance. Using this new feature, appliances automatically update their datastores to always remain ‘hot’. Thus, if failover occurs, performance does not suffer. Juniper does not even support any type of failover on its WXC line of appliances.
