Editor's Notes
All of this remote infrastructure is hard to support, often requiring staff to fly-and-fix if anything goes wrong.
This infrastructure is cost-inefficient because much of it is not purpose-built for branch environments and is massively underutilized and under-virtualized.
This infrastructure leaves arguably your company’s most value asset – data – at risk. Forrester found as much as 50% of corporate data lives in branches.
Finally, this infrastructure is subject to downtime because of the disasters – both natural ones like storms, but also manmade caused by human error.
One of the key opportunities is to help customers solve challenges as it relates to branch IT in addition to those Alison and Heidi have highlighted.
SteelFusion is…. The only branch converged infrastructure that delivers local user performance, data centralization, instant recovery, and lower TCO
What this means is that we can now help customers simplify their branch office architecture – in turn helping them simplify overall management effort and lower risk – all while reducing costs from the branch.
In the branch we see customers hosting and managing a range of workloads from common branch services like file and domain controllers and security services, to business-critical custom apps that need to run in a given site to support the business in that location.
SteelFusion combines the full infrastructure stack – In addition to the goodness that SteelFusion provides, we add the Virtual Services Platform (VSP), which enables customers to seamlessly run VMware vSphere in the branch. We add to this Riverbed’s unique BlockStream storage delivery technology, which enables the data centralization. This is key to the branch because, unlike repurposed converged infrastructure solutions, for the branch customers have clearly communicated to us that the want to eliminate the risks and costs associated with storing data in the branch.
Option 1- SteelFusion Recommended Option
1. Virtualization of all existing hosts (JD Edwards, SQL DB, File/Print/Antivirus, Domain Controller, Patch server) on SteelFusion appliance in every branch – which also provides WAN optimization for SaaS/O365 traffic and branch-DC traffic.
This will eliminate the need for physical servers and backup (server, software and tape) at the branch
Ease of provisioning for all new hosts, and new branch infrastructure/services
2. Centralize branch data, back to the DC, (thus removing storage from branch and sending it back to the DC) where it is protected away from the branch therefore eliminating the risk of potential 2 week data loss.
branch environment can be run from the DC in case of a branch disaster
3. Near real-time data protection of branch data, as data is synched continuously back to DC as it is written at the branch.
4. Centralization of data allows for a single point for data protection (data backup and restore, data replication) for all Shelf Drilling Data at the DC
5. Data that requires constant access will be cached completely at the branch (mission critical data such as JD Edwards, SQL), while only active/hot data from other applications (File server for instance) are cached (80/20) at the branch.
Option 2 – SteelHead with Virtualization
1. Virtualize all existing hosts (JD Edwards, SQL DB, File/Print/Antivirus, Domain Controller, Patch server) on a single appliance in every branch – which also provides WAN optimization for SaaS/O365 traffic and branch-DC traffic.
This will eliminate the need for physical servers and backup (server, software and tape) at the branch
Ease of provisioning for all new hosts, and new branch infrastructure/services
Reduce Capital Costs
Minimize the physical infrastructure needed to run branch apps
Eliminate disparate servers and storage from the branch
Drive greater utilization of datacenter storage investments
Eliminate branch-based data protection
Get rid of backup and replication servers
Remove tape and backup media
CENTRALIZE BACKUP OPERATIONS
Centralize protection of branch servers, applications and data
Benefit from mature enterprise-class datacenter practices
Guest Backup
Array-based snapshots
Consistent Backups VSS and VADP
Disk backup and deduplication
Datacenter-to-datacenter replication
Recover in minutes from disasters
Recover VMs by starting in the datacenter when remote locations are inaccessible
Re-project VMs from the datacenter to the branch with BlockStream
Enact disaster avoidance
Proactively move services in anticipation of outage event
Reduce data loss with near real-time synchronization of data to the datacenter
Get Data out of high risk places
Maintain only limited set of active data blocks at remote locations
Protect data at rest with AES 256-bit encryption
Secure data in-flight with industry-standard SSL or IPSEC encryption
24 Hours vs. Minutes (15)
96X
Our testing suggests Riverbed SteelFusion may reduce the recovery time for branch offices experiencing a complete failure by 96X or more. Note, our table above has factored in only the time required for data retrieval and recovery, but does not factor in any possible requirements for pre-loading and shipping of systems from company datacenters, which is a frequent practice
Be confident that SteelFusion delivers on branch needs like no other solution can.
We give IT the complete visibility they need to monitor and manage their environment.
We are one of the few companies who really understand the implications of distance and location.
We have been solving distance and location performance and visibility problems longer than anyone else.
And we’ve been solving these problems in very different, innovative ways compared to everyone else.
So although we are now known as the WAN optimization company.
We are really much more than that.
We are the location independent computing company.
We are solving the distance and location equation.
And we’re going to help our customers unlock the full potential of location independent computing.
The challenge:
A single server model, while functional, offers limited availability because if the server goes down, there is no substitute and work stops until a solution is found. A single server also offers limited scalability, with a clear and finite limite to what it can handle.
Solution:
SteelFusion is the first and only branch converged infrastructure that delivers local performance while enabling data centralization, instant recovery, and a lower TCO. Transforming the delivery of IT services to remote offices, SteelFusion converges servers and storage into a single branch appliance while centralizing data back to the data center—all without sacrificing any of the benefits of locally running branch services. Together with EMC SAN and VSPEX Private Cloud infrastructure in the data center SteelFusion enables “stateless” branch services in which users access applications running locally in the branch while primary data is stored in the data center. This new approach significantly reduces required branch infrastructure and centralizes management of branch services.
SteelFusion and EMC VMAX enterprise virtualization and storage offers a converged infrastructure that’s pre-integrated and pre-configured and combines server, storage, networking, and virtualization. The key is that it’s workload optimized. The stack is tuned to optimize scalability and performance for the particular application it runs.
Benefits:
Together Riverbed SteelFusion and EMC storage platforms enable organizations to:
Lower branch IT costs by eliminating the need to purchase and maintain remote servers
Centralize control to eliminate remote IT personnel or “fly and fix” missions
Quickly provision remote and branch offices from the data center
Control data in the data center, removing sensitive information from high-risk locations
Centralize data protection to benefit from mature enterprise-class practices based on EMC technology
Rapidly recover from disasters by projecting VMs from the data center to the branch
Statistically, that corresponds to the following:
Converges onto a single, purpose-built platform for branch offices. Achieve 30x reduction in branch provisioning
Centralizes branch data back to your data center SAN, enabling you to achieve 96x reduction in recovery times
Replicates centralized data to a disaster recovery site. Enables you to achieve 60x replication performance and 99% bandwidth reduction.
