1. The
Mysterious
Case of J.
Hoffa
By: Meghan Cox and Natalie
Shannon
Per. 6
2. Background Check!
Hoffa was leader of
“Teamsters Union”
• Hoffa convicted in 1964 for
tampering with the
jury, attempted bribery and
fraud
• He was sentenced to 15
years in prison
3. Background Check Part 2!
• The Nixon
Administration
pardoned him in 1971
• Made Hoffa vow to
“not engage in direct
or indirect
management of any
labor organization.”
• Hoffa agreed to terms
4. Possible
Alternative Checks
to Use:
• Impeach the judge responsible for the
conviction of Hoffa.
-Hoffa was already in prison for quite
some time so this wouldn’t have helped to
get him out.
• Change a law to make tampering with jury,
political bribery, and fraud legal.
-This would be immoral and wouldn’t pass.
5. Check that was
actually used:
– Nixon checked the
Judiciary branch and
pardoned Hoffa
– This check was the
speediest which is why
this was used.
6. How effective
was NixoN’s
check?
• Check was unsuccessful.
– Pardon was not for moral reason
• Nixon (executive branch) was given far too
much power.
• Overruled fair judicial ruling
• Did not consult legislative branch with choice
• Even though no one agreed with the pardon, Nixon
went on with the plan.
7. Legacy!
• Nixon is now seen much differently as a
president
-FBI later revealed Nixon received illegal
campaigndonations from the Teamsters.
• Pardoned later for federal crimes (By Pres.
Gerald Ford in 1974)
