  • 4.  A SOFTWARE RUN ON THE COMPUTER  PROVIDES ACCESS TO A SEARCH ENGINE E.G  CHROME  SAFARI  OPERA  FIREFOX  A SOFTWARE THAT RUNS ON THE SERVER SOMEWHERE ELSE  STORES INFO AND INDEXES FOR SEARCHERS TO FIND E.G  GOOGLE  YAHOO!  BING
  • 5.  Search by Keywords (e.g. AltaVista, Excite, Google, and Northern Light)  Search by categories (e.g. Yahoo!)  Specialize in other languages (e.g. Chinese Yahoo! and Yahoo! Japan)  Interview simulation (e.g. Ask Jeeves!)
  • 6.  Spider/WebCrawler  Index (gathers the organic search results)  Search interface
  • 7.  These are the rules and regulations through which the electronic items are to connect and to exchange information . e.g:  HTTP(Hypertext transfer protocol)  FTP(File transfer protocol)  HTML(Hypertext markup language)  SMT(Simple mail transfer protocol)
  • 8.  The first searching tool:  “Archive” was created in 1990, was able to create a searchable database.  Gopher came in 1991,it led to new search programs , Veronica and Jughead.  Web’s second search engine was “ALIWEB”, appeared in 1993.  Fletcher : It was the first WWW resource discovery tool. It combined the 3 essential features of web search engines : 1. Crawling 2. Indexing 3. Searching
  • 9.  WebCrawler: One of the first “All Text” crawler based search engine , came in 1994. Soon after many search engines came:  Excite  Infoseek  Northern Light  Inkotomi  Altavista  Yahoo!
  • 10. Emergence of GOOGLE Google was started in 1996/98.Around 2000 it rose to prominence by achieving better search results for many searches with an innovation called Page Rank. 7 important achievements of Google: 1. Google adSense 2. Youtube 3. Google Maps 4. Gmail 5. Android 6. iPhone Search 7. Chrome
